As a person who is blind and hearing impaired, and wears hearing aids as well. I love this short TEDTalk! She is hitting all the great points! Thank you for this talk!
Closed captions, agendas before meetings, notes after meetings - such simple ways to improve the experience of disabled employees and (currently) abled employees! @Catarina, thank you for taking us through your experience (as a blind and hard-of-hearing person) going to an interview. I didn't realize the extra steps, concerns, and considerations that can be a regular part of a disabled person's day, on top of just living and working.
@Alice Thank you for taking the time to learn from my experience! There are so many easy ways to make workplaces more inclusive. I hope to see more companies becoming aware of this and taking action.
Wow! You responded! I also enjoyed your talk and its a recommendation for my human services degree, currently studying administration and completing my week 1 assignment which covers workplace protocols for disabled workers, clients & vendors. @@CatarinaRivera
Thank you for opening our consciousness for what many of us take for granted. Your talk demonstrates that disability does not equal unable. You gave a TEDx talk despite having limited hearing and sight!!! Thank you for showing us what disabled "really" looks like.
A great talk, Catarina! So true that people who are different in some way are actually an asset to society as a whole and not a problem. This growing divisiveness in our world on many fronts is disconcerting and a destructive trend. The fabric of our society should contain all the colours and textures and be a richer fabric overall
Hi Catarina, Thank you so much for your great insights! Yes - DISABILITY INCLUSION! Workplaces should be accessible for all - follow "best practices," and be open to even better!
In my belief, I fell that we were created to be "incomplete but in a likeness" so that we would find connecting easier, and become as a whole body. Keep up the great work by manifesting awareness to the needs of disabled individuals.
This talk is incredibly short, powerful, and sweet! So many practical tips and eye-opening points on how we as a society look at disability. Catarina really blessed the TEDx stage 🤗
Great job Catarina! This is a very important topic. You offered great tips for easy and attainable best practices! Keep up the awesome work you are doing my friend!
This is very well done! I love the painting the picture of the interview process. Excellent points! I pray that our work makes a difference for young people living with disabilities to have less stress in the interviewing process and workplace.
Beautifully said, it is unfortunate that some of the simplest things some of us take for granted are some of the most defining yet nerve wrecking obstacles for others. Thank you for this experience and honor of thinking through staff experiences differently.
Yay so happy for you. We need to do something about Ableisum in hiring and the work place. Though I must admit the looks of shock and confusion when I walk into a interview, because they responded to the application that I didn't disclose, are pretty funny.
One critique: visually impaired people really should stop referring to themselves as “Blind“. Blind is a very specific level of vision loss, which is complete and total loss of vision. If you have 5% of your vision remaining, then you are not totally blind.
this comment is laughable…this woman just explained at length how her severely impaired ability to see affects her life. Further, She explains how this limited ability causes her to be innovative and how that gives her somewhat of an edge over the competition. I have one critique for you…stop telling other people how to refer to themselves or thinking that your opinion should be the standard 💁🏻♀️💅

Thank you!
We've managed this since the dawn of humanity. There is no problem here. Nothing needs to change. Deal with life on life's terms. The end.
