Who would have thought that the cocky 22 year old kid who took over the captaincy from Shaun Pollock, would go on to become the best ever Proteas captain.
This incident means a lot to all of us, hardwork and dedication might not always necessarily end up in success but it still will make you a winner. Graeme Smith didn't step out of the field as the last casualty rather he stepped out as a role model to many and a dedicated fighter. We can't always say that hardwork results in success but it always results in vital life lessons...
He couldn't save the game but he inspired generations. Trust me, winning or losing is part of the game, but the spirit of the game is in how it's played and not who wins.

Smith was always a gritty batsman if not technically very correct. He had been known for his tenacity and determination right from the young age he was shouldered the big responsibility at. Great captain & player! Look he almost made it in this match too!

And you guys upload parts from those epic matches, And I am one among those mad Proteas Supporter from India who have watched those matches live on TV taking leave from jobs.
Yeah he said that, he was thinking of again going for the hand. How merciless Aussies prove themselves to be! Absolutely justifies my hate towards them.
@@aniketpandey4864 No one cares such an attitude. That's hated upon. When he was hit in the hand, he again wanted to go for that hand, so that he gets injured for months. That's the merciless Aussies. I respect their legacy. I hate their characters! Even the great old Windies of the 1980s were more brutal and merciless. But they were far generous from these Aussies. Something which screams, that Windies are worthy of respect, Aussies are not.
@@jugalkishornayak8863 Getting the ball to hit his hand was probably the only way they could get him to play the ball and get out...Thats the plan after all. There was no intention of making him injured for months. Graeme Smith came to bat after getting injured so he also must be aware of getting it further injured until he's on crease. The fact that he stood for his nation is something respectable and inspiring for younger generations But, for Australia to win the match they had to go after his hand or else Smith would have left the deliveries unplayed and the match would have been drawn. You seriously cannot let a match go away from your hands for the reason that you were feeling merciful for your opponent, that's not how game works.
That Tour, South Africa already won the Test Series in Australia 2008/09 will remember players like Styen, Smith, ABD, Kallis, Boucher, Duminy etc at the end Cricket wins that Courage of Smith salute to him

I remember watching that test and when Graeme Smith came on to bat again, I wanted them to draw it, I wanted him to go the distance and hold onto the test haha even though I'm an Aussie.
Some people are tough but that toughness may not be seen from outside but they are more solid for the inside. We must believe from the inside whether you win or loose.
So many comment on the cracks in the wicket by people obviously not accustomed to Australian wickets. Characteristic of the Sydney wicket. Excellent cricket wicket that produced results, not boring marathons. Very good for batting first 2-3 days, then deteriorate to become difficult by late day 4. 220 often a very good 4th innings score with some cracks opening by then and taking spin. A complete test for 2 teams that brings every single player into the game at some point over 5 days.
This is a courageous act, there's no debating it, and Graeme Smith was one of the game's most imposing figures. In my opinion he's the best captain to have ever played the game. However, I don't get why he'd do that when SA had already won the series. The best possible result they could've got in that game was a draw, but regardless of the result the they still won the series. If the series was still alive and a draw would see them win the series then yes I'd get why he would do it, but why do it in a dead rubber? Makes no sense
You know... Good for him that it nearly paid off. I'd say its rather stupid to play with a broken hand. What if he had injured himself even worse? or hit himself in the same spot. There's only a very thin membrane of luck that divides bravery and stupidity sometimes. Thank God that he came back safe to the pavilion. He could've been on the other side too. But for the intent... The mental decision... Should i go or not to try n save my team... I praise this man!
On that day Graeme Smith earned every person's respect
He always held mine. Top bloke.
Brother. Today Tamim Iqbal did the same against Sri Lanka.
He earned respect way before than that with his leadership quality and humility. Probably the greatest captain of the 21st century.
He certainly earned mine. Tremendous courage, but really most of us here in OZ already thought he was a fine player and great captain.
