This was a very refreshing video. So many times we see walk around street photographers on their videos, taking snapshot after snapshot and we know they’re just not that great. However, you explaining that you’re just capturing the moment practicing, and if something extraordinary comes along you’ll be ready. I wish more people would edit their photos and critique them as well as you have here. Well done.

Those men in yellow are using tactile signing. That is a method of communicating by people who have both a hearing loss and sight impairment. Cool pic by the way. Love the video.

Hi Mike, thank you very much for this video! I really like it when people have priority in photos without hunting them down with a telephoto lens. In a way, this is the style of street photography that I really like. Best regards from the road, Dirk (DT-Classics)

It’s always helpful to see ‘warts n all’ POV videos and the critique at the end adds more interest.
Ignoring the light issue, I think you did well with the 3 + 2 yellow groups. I suspect I would have bruised the scene and come away with nothing.
Thanks for doing these videos. Oh - shoe news update - I’m loving my pair of Inov-8 Roclites with amazing grip

Great video. Despite giving most of them below 5/10, I still think the odds were still in your favor for capturing potential "winner" at those busy places. The way you share the insights and critique your photos also helped me understand your rationale and definitely invoked thinking process when I go out and shoot next time.

Really enjoyed the analysis Mike - though 4.5 for the smoking guy seems a little modest! Interesting seeing the video footage of the pigeon shot - very different to how I read the ‘story’ when seeing just the photograph earlier. Nice one 👍

Are you using manual mode or shutter priority?

Although i can understand your approach of wide angle photography, and although i can see the spirit and energy of those kind of pics, i must tell you that all those kind of pics in my country can be considered illegal if published without permission. Thats the main reason i hate wide angles, i prefer to observe from a distance and to use my beloved 50 and 85mm lenses that can also give me that lovely bokeh that i am addicted too. Nice video though. Thank you

You are using the lens all wrong if people are small. Get in much, much closer. I used a 28mm for years and the secret to success was in getting close.

Mannnn this is just what I needed to see for this upcoming weekend! I'm going out to use my x100v for some street photography for the first time. Do you have any tips on how to capture quick moments, like the one at 1:57 with the gentlemen smoking? I'm not 100% on my shutter speed and aperture settings so any insight would be appreciated!

  • @legofanessex

It's an interesting discussion, but for me, why limit my possibilities when my time to be out shooting is so rare. Give me all the tools to get the shot. I like my zoom and won't be stopping anytime soon. But we should all do what we enjoy without judgment. I like the red hat one the most. Keep up the great content!

Was curious about this as well, if you just use zone focusing rather than autofocus, I guess the answer is probably a mix based on the time you have to set it up??

I've been loving the Q2 I enjoy getting close to subjects anyway but the 28mm lens makes me go real close the Images definitely have more impact the closer you get. I shot a similar video a few weeks back where I did a wee critique of the shots I made never thought of scoring them tho' great idea. cheers

Pigeon man and Yellow pop/son(?) definitely 7-8, great timing and composition. However, you could have pushed the post processing to maximise potential. The ad in pigeon background could have been desaturated/monotoned (or simply converted b/w), and the Asians dodged and burn, perhaps mannequins and shops in more shadow, and smart viewer would see the connection on closer inspection. But pretty good, love your humbleness!

It's a very good video of yours and nice try to explain your love for wide angle photography. On the contrary, i hate wide angles. I am 50mm and 85mm guy, but i respect and understand every opinon and preference. In my mind, wide angle street photos re like snapshots, childish, non organized, non previsualized and , of course, non bokeh oriented ones. These re the reportage type of world vision and is successful only when photographer is too close to peopl;e. But, i am an introvert, i like to observe, not to take action. I want to direct myself my mext picture and every piture and i want to give the socalled "cinematic" vibe. Not to mention, that in my country, if i could dare to publish on social or use that type ofyour pictures for commercial use without permission i could easily be in jail! Believe me, in many man countries, those-close to people- type public photos re illegal (without permission) On the other hand , your photos re great. Not for me though

Some of them are interesting photos. I would have used the portrait mode more often, and would have left their feet to them people. 28mm and autofocus is just a concession to the younger generation with them being used to mobile phone’s perspective and having (maybe) difficulties with zone and/or manual focusing. Also you maybe need to care either for the rule of thirds or Fibonacci … of course one can reach it with post processing as well but it saves a lot of work caring while photographing. Always „good“ light!,👍🏻
