    This was really helpful! I've also loved seeing all your content from Antarctica so far 😍❄️
    When you put your settings next to the stills, could you occasionally include whether or not you focus stacked? I'm still getting my sense of when it's necessary.

    Really enjoyed this Nigel. I find wide angle creates so much foreground it can be difficult to eliminate and isolate my landscape so this has been really helpful. Loved the images captured. Thanks for sharing.

    Really good points as usual Nigel. I feel like good Wide-angle photos are a good indicator of someone's skill/experience, because it's such a difficult lens to create simple, pleasing images with. Hope Antarctica has treated you well (it certainly looks like it has!) 😁

    The biggest mistake people make with wide angles is using too wide an angle, so all you see is the foreground.
    But I agree that an L-bracket (and a levelling base) are essential game changers for a tripod!

    Wonderful points and well illustrated as usual. Loved so many images in this vlog...well done. Question on the shot with the tufts of grass along the creek, do you find that you need to focus stack using wide angle more often to retain the sharpness? I believe that image was taken at f9 if I recall, but I often come home with a solid composition (I think) then I’m disappointed looking at the detail particularly in the immediate foreground. Any helpful hints? Thank you for your continued high quality vlogs!

    Thank you so much for the extensive thought and work you put into your videos. I know how much time this takes, adding in the drone shots, setting up the camera and walking in and out of shots, especially if you are on your own, plus the time thinking about the shots themselves. Great tips too about wide angle shots.

    Very good explanation!!! I live an ultrawide when I am right too close to the background (on purpose) and can find a compelling foreground object that may actually start just inches away from from the front of the lens. Keeping mess out of the foreground is also so important. I also find that there are times when shooting at an angle instead of level can add a lot of interest and creativity to the shot.

    Excellent views nigel ( but more dead trees and dead grass + woolly hats) can't you get sponsored to do a show on Holiday shots, in warmer climes? Perhaps Volcanoes of Java, Rainforest on Sumatra etc. Everyone is shooting dead grass and icy cold scenes. it is getting boring.

    I was out in the Shropshire Hills with my XT3 yesterday and I took a very similar shot to the one at 10:55, with the grass and stream. The Nikon files look great but the Fuji files turn everything to a blurry mush. I had the 16 f1.4 at f11 with a much faster shutter speed and low ISO. Fuji isn't that great at handling landscapes with busy details such as trees, shrubbery and grasses.

  • @tw9535
    @tw9535 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have TONS of respect for anyone who can find truly interesting compositions with that wide of a wide angle. It is very, very hard to do.
    Often one has to trick themselves into believing that a foreground element is far more interesting than what it _actually_ is.
    (Of course this is coming from a portrait guy that lives life between 70-105).

    • @journeytoaphotograph
      @journeytoaphotograph 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      😁😁😅 Very guilty of this! In the field, take one sunset, add a large foreground rock, boom job done. Then in post, heavily apply the belief filter 🤣

    • @tw9535
      @tw9535 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@journeytoaphotograph Ha!! Yeah, I think geologists might be the only people who appreciate rocks more than photographers. And even that is only sometimes.
      But I apply that foreground belief filter myself, of course. As a portrait guy I have a collection of pictures of blurry bushes, tree limbs and leaves that could make a Home & Garden catalog. Followed by sometimes running that belief filter through some frequency separation, too .

    I've figured out why so many of the photo advice TH-cam guys offer constantly uses the word 'mistake': It improves your algorithm in hopes of getting more views. Why do I care? Because art creation.and vision are not cut and dried absolutes that can be defined, or even tried to be defined. You used 'mistake' about 25 times in this vid. Offering advice to other photographers is great, but causing them to think there is a defined right or wrong is... a mistake.

    Wide angle landscape shots? Most of the time rubbish. Makes your GREAT mountains look like mole hills. And the foreground is most of the time just generic, like rocks, grassland or sand. Makes for generic shots, not catching the specific location. So never even think of using a wide angle lens for landscape! (Use it for cityscapes, if you don't have an eye for details.)

    Nice one Nigel. The use of foreground material is one which is so, so important in w/a photography, especially when in portrait format. Also, the notion of getting very close to larger background elements if you wish to still use the wide end is very important. Otherwise, I believe you have to have some decent sky formation to balance the foreground.

    Landscape vs portrait... if you photographing commercially, then most definitely both, and the portrait may be more 'valuable' as it is, a) less common, b) is the right way round for single-page publication and c) doesn't need cropping from LS for full page. Just remember, if you are using a polarising filter to change it by 90° the way!

    Granted, you do find some amazing spots to shoot - but there's so much more. The way you can take in an entire scene, and find the beauty, the sweet spot - it's a talent very few have. I'd love to be shooting your "mistakes". But really? Your "mistakes" are "happy little accidents" (Bob Ross quote). I truly admire that you look to your own work, and critique that. You don't take other people's work and say "they should have done this or that". You are a true giant in your profession, and I cherish the knowledge you share with us. Thank you for another great video tutorial.

    Love this video, I hope everyone else gets how key it is!. Question, why did you go f2.8? why not just shoot it all wide f8 and above? Was it because of light?. Bumping iso to 500 would not affect your image negatively if you needed it. I assume your using hyperfocal distance when you used f2.8?. Love everything yo do, it is like spot on, where so many other youtuber's specially for landscapes just waffle with general stuff that is like me making Italian pasta, or an Italian restaurant making it!. (Your the Italian restaurant to everyone else's home made bad dry pasta!)

    Another great video. I have a wide angle lense but use it rarely. You've inspired me to get it out so thanks.
    One question... As youre shooting at a small apature (2.8) are you focus stacking?

    Great video and absolutely brilliant final print! Contrast is spot-on, and everything balances perfectly, like you said.
    I tend to struggle with all of these aspects when using my 20mm, so I always appreciate the tips. I think my biggest are no "star" and wrong focus point. Then definitely not quite getting the framing right.
