- Guwange 1cc Guide and Commentary (Mister FPGA) || How to Play Shoot Em' Ups! In celebration with the recently release Mister FPGA port of Guwange, I have decided to revist one of my favorite shoot em' ups (shmups) of all time! In today's video I not only demonstrate at 1cc of Guwange (Blue Version) on Mister, but I also go in depth on the mechanics of the game and give advice on tips and tricks of mastering this unique and amazing bullet hell. I really love this period of CAVE where they were trying some really innovative new ideas that still stand up to this day. I'd love to see a follow up to this style of shmup in the future! Also even though I am playing the Blue Version of the game (which has harder boss fights), almost every strat also works on the regular arcade version as well.

I just want to say that these are my favorite kinds of videos that you make. Informative 1cc commentaries of games are not too common on youtube.
I'm really glad you like them! They are a little more niche than reviews and such, but I think they are important and tend to be useful for people in the long run.
@@TheElectricUnderground Yeah, I saw in one of your videos you said they get fewer views and less attention. I figured I should stick up for my favorite part of your content. A lot of youtube videos are very transient and tied in with popular sentiments of the era where they were made. Entire channels become irrelevant as culture shifts. But 1cc commentary/guides are always useful within the arcade gaming scene. Maybe 100 years from now, future generations will rediscover guwange and wonder how the hell to beat it. :p

If I'm not mistaken, You didn't speak about two things:
1) the bomb can be rotated around your player by keeping the bomb button pressed and moving your lever in different directions. Maybe you don't need it?
2) when using your ghost, something that disorient new comers, is that you can move freely your ghost in all direction, yes. But your player will move slowly (as you explained) in ONLY 2 directions. left and Right. You can not go up or down with your player while directing your ghost. I think this is why people feel uncomfortable at first because they think they can dodge slowly in every direction while using the ghost, but no. Only Left and Right.
oh yes two great points!! I sort of mentioned the no vertical movement in passing but would have been good to clarify that more for sure
Excellent commentary, Mark. Guwange has been one of my favorites for years, specifically because it’s so unique. Really wish Cave experimented more (when they still made games), because while Ketsui and the Mushis and the Donpachis are incredible, there’s really nothing else quite like Guwange, specifically the bodyguard mechanic of the spirit.
Yeah I think guwange brought a lot of cool ideas to the genre that should be picked up and continued
I've been playing a ton of Guwange as of lately including other Cave shumps on retroarch on a modded Wii U. Absolutely loved it! Top shmup for sure. Your channel is one of the best/chill shmup channels out there. Keep it up dude. Great content and commentary !

I’ve always loved the aesthetics of this game, but the shiki shot is so awkward and unsatisfying that I never get hooked enough to attempt a clear. You have some great tips in this video that might help people like me get over this barrier. Thanks.

+1 the MiSTer devs are really making an important job in preserving old hw and give us these presents. Arcade games as accurate as arcade pcbs.

Great commentary! My favorite CAVE game outside of Ketsui. I've always found the boss patterns in this game to be most reminiscent of Ketsui, particularly the final boss.
It's funny you mentioned spiritual successors, I'm finishing up a hybrid puzzle shmup right now but the next thing I want to tackle is an idea I've had that takes heavy inspiration from Guwange.

Came out the same year as giga wing, notice the similarity there? Guhwang, Giga Wang? Can't be a coincidence just look at the bullet reflectin.
it is really interesting how naming conventions and such seem to overlap during certain times. There must be something in the water ha. I wonder if there might be some meta reason more games were coming out with g titles? like if they notice a gap in the shelf space where G is ha. Stuff like that can have funny influences.

The Esp da re guide is also great.Never could get into Guwange but I may have to try again after studying this guide at some point in the future.

Enjoyed the game without knowing what to do on MiSTer. Good to know the mechanics. It looks amazing and i liked the whole artstyle. Cave goodness.

@@TheElectricUnderground Yeah. Its funny to have in a shmup. Vandal hearts is another game where i enjoy the blood. Without gloryfying the violence. Just as part of the artstyle. Also playing on the ps1 core on MiSTer.

I've always liked Guwange. It's an evolution on the Bio-Ship Paladin formula just like that game was to Missile Command.
Great summary of the weird systems of this awesome game and some helpful tips I'll have to try on the final boss. Actually I would like to hear a more advanced guide where you describe some of the other stages/bosses in the same level of detail as the Baby / Lord Guwange. I've been playing the game for a couple months now and still can't get consistent on Stage 4/5 or boss 3, even with planned out cancels and bombs.
yes at some point I plan on playing the game for score (later down the line) and I would love to do a chaining guide for it
Love these kinds of videos, great resource for getting people into the genre, and over that initial difficulty hurdle.
How do you find the emulation accuracy of Mister compared to shmuparch?
They seem super close! I couldn't tell any difference. Their might be one (outside the sprite on the worm) but nothing stood out :-)
A pocky and rocky game in this style would be cool. It’d work since it’s already a top down run and gun so it’d feel natural
that would be a cool crossover, I kinda hoped pocky would play like this game when I first saw it, but sadly not
You can fire the bomb 360° if you press and hold the bomb button after you fire it.
You can also collect items by shooting them with your ghost

I'd also love to see another game that picks up on some of the unique ideas this game has. Slowing down bullets within a certain radius seems like the perfect premise for a Shoot the Bullet sort of game.
yes I always learn the correct way to say the game, and then a month later get mixed up again and forget ha. I'm cursed with these japanese titles. Such an awesome game though and I'd love to see more shmups follow it's mechanics
Actually it’s more like goo wahng geh.
Ppl think the E sound in Japanese is pronounced like ayy but no, it’s eh. If you see anything spelled with ei, then that’s pronounced like ayy. For example if it was guwangei
Also the ahh sound in Japanese sounds more like the vowel in “wok” than “long”. So the second syllable wang would have the same vowel sound as in wok

the thing that really pisses me off about this game is stage long, game long chaining.
the uber chain (that's my name for it) is a divider for sure. I like it for the most part, but I agree it should pause during boss fights, that way the game could have avoided all the dumb boss milking strats

@@TheElectricUnderground @The Electric Underground lol . Don t believe on Miracles. Have you ever thought in doing a video of guilty pleasures. Mine is stagger from afega. There was a time that most of the arcades did not have shoot em Ups near my house, and the few ocasions they hád the joystick was horrible (could not do diagonals) . Yes many arcade houses did nor care about maintanance.there was a small alley that hád only cheap Pirates machines, that até leAst hád proper conditions. For a year was my fun. In spire of being average i still play sometimes. There were 3 shootemup in arcades that made enter in the gente. First outzone, then stagger and latter strikers 2 neo geo version.
I really like this game, mainly for the art style and it's a bit different.

I used to like (TRYING) to get all achievements in as many xbla games as I could, this ones's lsit was surprisingly mild for this type of genre, no 1cc runs required. But heck, why not try anyway!
Ha yeah the xbox achievements are a bit underwhelming. I have said GOO WANG GAY for years and now I can't stop myself ha.

Is the XBLA version okay? Also do you ever play Shmups with an arcade stick? Have you done a video on controllers?

I love cats but I'm deathly afraid of spiders, so cat-spider is just wrong on so many levels. I don't have a Mister, nor a current gen Xbox so sadly I don't have access to this game. I think I have it on my Raspberry Pi, and I think I remember trying it but it was really janky so I didn't play it for very long.

Mark (or anyone else really), you want to do a 2 player 1cc of Guwange with me on fightcade? I want to do a 1cc 2 player run of any arcade game on there. I want to upload it to my Chanel and do some commentary. I want to promote 2 player co op on fightcade....usually it's just used for 1 v 1 ass kicking but I think fightcade can be a friendly place :)

Anyone has tips for video settings (Mister + LCD)? I find graphics looking somewhat ugly, washed out, smudged, plus i have awful flickering when continue menu appears.
Also, is the original arcade Guwange display supposed to have scanlines (i almost always use scanline filters)?
Get in the ini file and change the video settings to 2 I believe, which should disable v sync
@@TheElectricUnderground Thanks, i checked and my vsync is already 2. Strange, i don't think this flickering happens with other games.
