Can you explain why it's illegal, I play magic but still don't get this cause urza puts card on battlefield which overrides casting
I like how Ryan got Esper Sentinel with Urza's Saga, only to later get an Aether Vial with Oswald Fiddlebender, which although the first one was illegal, still could result in the same boardstate.
Can you elaborate. Im confused...
@@DUxMORTEM Urza's Saga says in tier 3 you search for an artifact with mana cost 0 or 1. Specifically 0 or 1. Not mana value 0 or 1, which means he needed to find something like Aether Vial from Urza's Saga and couldn't physically get Esper Sentinel as it costs one white, not 1 colorless. Misplay, but resulted in effectively the same board.

depends tho. i feel like the mana one shot threat is different from the thrasios "ill activate in response" threat. but i might miss something. it also took me a while with esper bc my playgroup fetched many a esper sentinel with urza's saga, but its the colored pip, right?
@@trveheimer6360 Yeah, it's the pip. Note that Urza's Saga doesn't talk about mana value: it says that the mana cost must be exactly {0} or {1}. You can't fetch Walking Ballista either, for instance, even though its mana value is 0, because it doesn't cost {0} (it costs {X}{X}).
Game 1: "Ha! I win" - "Well yes, but actually no, I win." - "OK, well then I do this. HA, I win again!" That was some OG Yugi heart of the cards bullshit and I love it.
Though it seems obvious in retrospect, I did not realize Aurelia and Sword of Hearth and Home enables infinite combats. I'm gonna keep that in mind

I put the Sword in my Aurelia deck just because it's an amazing value + ramp in boros. Those two cards going infinite is honestly kind of a bummer because it's awkward to play it in casual pods.
They should learn how to pronounce Hearth tho

I'm curious how you would handle it: Would you draw attention to the fact that memory lapse was milled? Or just hope he doesn't notice. On one hand it is a nice thing to do and builds a basis of trust that keeps the game flowing instead of having to check everyones gy before passing. On the other hand that could've been a win and trying to win is kind of the point of cedh isn't it?
So here is my thought generally people say what they mill or discard since it is open knowledge.
Instead of naming/looking through all graveyards you just let them know if things they may be interested in.
I reckon I'd do it in any group where I wanted to continue playing with them. The fact that you milled it is public knowledge, and so keeping quiet feels (personally) like you're not playing against an opponent's decision making, but their ability to remember your decklist. It just doesn't feel fun.
In a tournament, though, I wouldn't say anything. In that case, you're trying to win, and that's just one way of doing it.
I typically tell them important cards while also offering to look through because I don't always know what people are looking for
the thing that would alarm me would be delivering a game ending mill combo like that and everyone but the one person scooping their cards for another game. if u wanna continue the game after i’ve just “won”, i’m terrified.
also, i try and make it a fair deal with my playgroup that if an entire deck is milled then instead of looking through u can just ask questions like “do you have any reanimate effects or flashback” so the game can end quicker

Why would Zain not redirect mana drain to the rhystic study?
To not give him extra mana, I guess.
Because it redirected to a spell that was no longer on the stack, my mana drain fizzled, not giving me any mana. Zain told us he felt confident he had this game by this point and he wasn't worried about rhystic
@@jagesjack I get that he didn't get the mana, but I think 3 mana is much less scary than an on board Rhystic Study. Especially since if Tyler had tried to do a big play with that extra mana that would have been a counterspell check right before Zack's win attempt
@@thesp1r1tdragon55 Because Zain knew he was going to attempt a win on his next turn and saw Mike had tapped out for Rhystic Study. Whatever interaction Mike drew would’ve been useless because of Hinata.

Hello, can I confirm that casting Deflecting swat for free using Underworld Breach is illegal? Underworld Breach gives escape to the cards which is also an alternative cost. Under 702.138a: Escape represents a static ability that functions while the card with escape is in a player's graveyard. "Escape [cost]" means "You may cast this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost." Casting a spell using its escape ability follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2f-h. It means that you can only pick one alternate cost. Anyways the game is superb, love to see Hinata.

I'm not sure if you can play deflecting swat using his alternate cost from the graveyard, you are already using the alternative cost of Escape. See rule 118.9a

Reflecting pool. Ryan had a white source.
Reflecting pool only checks your own lands. It’s exotic orchard that checks the opponent’s lands.

Btw not to rules-comment but important point a lot of players miss!! With breech, alt cast costs can’t be paid (no freebies) so you gotta pay the full 3 mana (magicishard)

Not sure if this was commented, but as far as I’m aware, at about 4:30 it is illegal to make mana drain target itself, as there is an MTG rule that says a spell cannot target itself on the stack
"Itself" being deflecting swat in this situation
@@Gaiametris im not sure exactly what you mean. Deflecting swat is trying to make mana drain target itself, which mana drain cannot do. you can make mana drain target swat, or another spell on the stack, but you cannot redirect mana drain to target itself at all
Deflecting Swat is redirecting Mana Drain to target deflecting Seat.

5:16 Does Ryan still have Red Elemental Blast in hand? If so, then this Mystical Tutor should be countered. REB can't stop Breach lines, and as was displayed later in the turn, Cathar Commando can't stop breach when there's a Deflecting Swat in the graveyard.
Often you want to counter the tutor target, not the tutor which is why he probably held up the REB. This is however the one case where you had to counter the tutor, which feels bad but he didn't know he had it until after the tutor.

No, because deflecting swat resolves and is no longer on the stack. So once mana drain is back on the stack, it has an illegal target and fizzles.

Nah, I was actually confused about why Urza's Saga couldn't get Esper Sentinel, until I took a closer look at the text.
I'm still missing why he couldn't. What should have prevented it?
Edit: Nm, just saw it was due to Esper Sentinel costing W instead of colorless. That is easy to miss.
@@Afire85 Yeah, Urza's Saga is a weird card because it mentions the exact cost, not the mana value. It must cost {0} or {1} exactly - you also can't get Walking Ballista (costs {X}{X}) or Mox Tantalite (no mana cost) out of its effect, even though they are both colorless and have a mana value of 0.

i don't get the twin flame, dualcaster mage combo. how can he make infinity copies without spending mana?
By casting dual caster on the stack with Twinflame, the dualcaster hits the board and ETB triggers goes off, so a new Twinflame goes onto the stack. That targets dualcaster, that dualcaster ETBs and copies the original twinflame. No extra mana paid, combo goes infinite.
4:08 why did he cast it in his upkeep?
Lets be honest DSE was the most valuable card in all 3 games. It enabled so much and just sent the game into mach9. 10/10 would ban.

one question for Game one: how did Zaun pay for the escaped deflecting swat?
After cracking LED for 3 blue and using 2 for Brain Freeze, he still had 1 floating and 2 untapped mana sources (Mana Confluence and a rock, i think Mox Opal) for a total of 3.
EDIT: Hinata discounted Brain Freeze by 1 since it targets, so he still had 4 up.

4:30 - Zain thought it was worth denying Tyler the 3 Mana Drain mana, even though it meant Mike got to have the Rhystic?
5:50 - Did Zain pay only 3 for a flashed back Sevinne's? It should cost 4, though it wouldn't change the outcome.
6:30 - Memory's Journey would've cost 3 mana to flash back thanks to Hinata, without a Spirit Guide there wouldn't be enough mana to cast it. Also, I like Turn the Earth better for the ability to hit multiple graveyards at once, though the mana costs are flipped.
First one was a misplay by me, lol
Second one, I used a floating mana from mana crypt, you can kinda see the “1” die on it

Urza's Saga's last chapter lets you tutor for an artifact with exact mana cost (not value) 0 generic or 1 generic mana. Esper Sentinel costs W, not 1 generic.

Yes
You can use companions as completely normal cards. The companion requirement is only relevant if you actually want to use it as a companion.

You can just shove the companion in the 99 of a commander deck if you don't want to build around the companion's specific restriction
In all formats, the companion ability is ignored if you don't declare the card as your companion. If you put it in the deck, it's just another card.
You're also allowed to play them as your commander, since they are all legendary. (Well, except for Lutri, because it's banned.) If you do, the companion restrictions also don't matter, because you're putting it in the deck (your commander is a card in your deck, even though it doesn't begin the game in your library), not playing it from outside the game as your companion.
The companion restrictions only matter if you're playing the companion as your companion, from outside the game.

@@jagesjack Underworld Breach is an alternate cost, you can't use both Breach's alternate cost and the one printed on the card, so in this case you have to pay the face value mana on the card
I paid 2 via floating mana I had. Hinata gives the 1 cost reduction.

you can't change the target of mana drain to itself. A spell is not a legal target for itself. You can only choose a legal target. See rule 114.4: A spell or ability on the stack is an illegal target for itself.

Urzas Saga is just placing the Esper Sentinel on the battlefield, not casting it. Should get through the Silence just fine.
If I'm not mistaken, the problem is that Urza's Saga specifies a mana cost of 0 or 1 colourless mana....Sentinel is 1 white
He can't search Sentinel because it costs (W) and Saga only searches artifacts that cost (0) or (1)
You can only look for an artifact with mana cost of exactly 1 generic mana or 0 generic mana. Esper Sentinel costs W to cast making it an illegal target for Urza's saga. Silence doesnt stop it but the target was illegal.
You don't redirect spells to themselves that is illegal but you can redirect it to the "redirect"
