How to make your ship model ropes more REALISTIC

  • EASY way to improve your ropes for rigging ship models
Today I am going to show you how to create beautiful ropes for your model that fall naturally and without fluff using beeswax.
I use a small electric stove to heat the wax on a metal cap. Wax is very important for this work, in fact, I use raw, natural, virgin beeswax.
Be careful because on the market you can find beeswax mixed with other and they are not good for this purpose, you can find the one I used for this video in the description below.
After melting the wax at 45-50C °, with the stove off, I soak a piece of paper and I rub the rope.
On the web, there are literally thousands of ways to do this even with diluted white glue, but in my case, I found this procedure faster and with nicer-looking results.
To remove the wax in excess, I go over with a dry piece of paper.
Thanks to this procedure, the cable will have no lint and get any shape.
This method can also be used on commercial cables such as the Amati ones.

Thanks for a very nice video and technique... may i ask what type of rope you are using, cotton or polyester?

Thank you! I suggest you watching my new video where I show a new more efficient technique for doing that, here’s the link:

As for the rope I only use cotton, I know many use polyester, but I don’t like it, it’s too bright and shiny compared to 100% cotton thread. Italian arsenal modellers use cotton. Polyester looks nicer in photos though, so that’s might be a reason many use it :)

@tagliamare how does the beeswax affect your ability to glue, like when you serve a rope after attaching a block or pulley?

It does not affect it. I suggest you watching my new video where I show a new more efficient technique for doing that, here’s the link:
