Hi Olha, I am buuilding a wooden ship model and wanted your opinion on a finish. is there a difference between a stain and a dye? if I stain or dye do I need to put a sealer on top? I want either no shine or very subtle shine in the finish. oh, and why do you use the cyano acrylate glue under the stain? thanks and love your work! where did you learn to build ship models?

Hello. Dyes and stains are different. Some look better with a topcoat and some don't. So I do a lot of sample before I use anything on a model. And I advise you to also make a pattern on a piece of wood that was used on the model and after experimenting - choose what you like!
Superglue penetrates the wood and fills the grains. After that, the stain lays in an even layer and does not look like a dirt on the model. Carpenters use nitro varnish for this, but the model does not have large areas for painting, so I replaced it with superglue...

    Thank you for sharing information.
I also try a lot of different finishes for my models on scrap pieces of wood. For brig Mercury I am currently using linseed oil for hull, shellac for deck planking (applying it as french polish with pad) and linseed oil with added oil colors to give contrast on boxwood decorations.
Your finished model looks stunning😁. Keep up good work.

    Dear Olha,
Although a beginner I started building le cerf from scratch. I used Fusion 360 to model the frames and cut them with a small CNC machine. I religiously follow the steps you took in your marvellous videos ! Bought a bunch of power tools too, including Byrne table saw. I intend to cut the planks from pearwood.
I just had a question regarding CA finish. Do you actually cover all the hull with thin CA glue? What kind of sanding do you perform before and after? Do you put several layers or only one?
And finally, do you confirm that you apply varnish AFTER the CA layer?
Sorry for the bother, but I think this is a very interesting tip !
    Best regards,
    Nicolas

      Hello Nicolas
CA I use to clog wood grains (usually 1 layer is enough). Then the stains lie in an even thin layer, and do not impregnate the wood, which in scale looks like dirt.
For hardwoods, I prefer skraping than sanding...
Before applying something on the model - try on samples, it will save you from irreparable mistakes!

thank you for the great tutorial! i have some questions, please...
    - do you varnish/paint only at end of build? how it is possible to polish (sand) parts , when they are already attached?
    - i understand that you use CA glue before painting? when i drop some CA on wood, it makes a white stain, therefor i try avoiding it ... is my glue a wrong kind? why to use CA at all?
    Thank you very much!

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm glad you found useful information here!
Yes, I delay the moment of application of the finishing layer as much as possible. As if it is for example oils, then to them then do not stick any details. But in some cases, I glue already painted parts, precisely because they had to be further sanded. And I use CA to close the grain of the wood before tinting - this is what carpenters usually do, for example, with nitro-varnish, but the models have a very small area, so I use CA. This is usually the thinnest CA. After that, the color of the stain lies evenly and does not make the wood dirty...
