- The City of Idaho Falls, working in partnership with IE Productions, a local production company, recently launched the “It’s Only a Roundabout” TH-cam video geared at educating the public on how to navigate two-lane roundabouts.
The video, timed appropriately with the grand opening of the new Costco Wholesale just north of the Lincoln and Hitt Road roundabout, features local talent and was a project lead by the City of Idaho Falls Public Works Department to provide instruction, as well as the history and benefits of roundabouts.
There are currently four roundabouts inside City of Idaho Falls limits; three of them are one-lane roundabouts located on S. Boulevard, Memorial Drive and S. Utah Avenue.
When Costco Wholesale selected the site just north of the Lincoln and Hitt Road roundabout, the City of Idaho Falls annexed the property, which included the two-lane roundabout at that location.
“Knowing that some motorists are not familiar with navigating roundabouts and may feel frustrated, anxious or even fearful, we felt it was very important to educate them and help calm some of those fears,” states Public Information Officer, Kerry Hammon. “We also felt it was important to add elements of humor, history and to make the video relatable. IE Productions and our local talent did an amazing job taking our vision and turning it into a creative, humorous and informative video.”
HISTORY
The first roundabout appeared in Great Britain in 1907 - hence the British accent in the video - and was originally intended as a traffic island for pedestrians. The circular invention appeared in the United States in the early 20th century, but fell out of favor in the 1950’s. In 1966, both America and England adopted a new mandatory “give-way” safety rule, creating a pathway for the modern roundabout.
BENEFITS
Roundabouts have been shown to be much safer than traditional intersections because they give drivers more time to judge and react to other cars, reduce the severity of crashes and reduce fatalities by up to 90 percent. They also offer 75 percent few conflict points than traditional intersections and cost much less to operate.
INSTRUCTIONS
Pay attention to the advanced signage and plan ahead for your intended destination.
Slow down. Always remain in complete control of your vehicle.
Always yield to anyone on the left. It does not matter which lane the vehicle is in, always yield to anyone on the left. Yield means to give the right of way to anyone approaching on your left, even if you need to come to a complete stop.
Approach the roundabout in the right lane if you need to make a right turn. Complete the right turn at your first opportunity.
To go straight through, approach the roundabout from the right or left lane and then stay in that lane until you reach the other side.
To make a U-turn or take what would be a left turn at a traditional intersection, stay in the leftmost lane, and follow the lane around until you reach your exit. Then follow the curved line out of the roundabout.
There should be no reason to stop, unless it is for bicyclists, pedestrians and unyielding drivers.
If you hear sirens from public safety vehicles before entering a roundabout, slow down and pull over to the right side of the road to let them by. If you are already inside the roundabout, continue through the roundabout and pull over to the right side of the road as soon as it is safe to do so. Do not stop in the middle of a roundabout.

The amount of intentional near misses at a roundabout is gobsmacking and that is what makes them very efficient! As you know that the other incoming drivers have time to brake if something goes wrong , you just cross in front of them

In most states of the U.S. they don't have round-a-bouts, although we tend to call them "rotaries". Here in Massachusetts we have quite a few of them. People from out of state get confused about how to use them. They're easy enough as long as you don't come across an out of stater, or just a jack ass who cant wait to get in the rotary and darts right in there without giving the cars that were already in the rotary the right of way. But if every one is familiar with them, they work out pretty well.
I have noticed in videos that Australia seems to be loaded with round-a-bouts.

I remember being 21 and encountering my very first roundabout whilst traveling in another state. We didn't have them where I grew up and never even learned about them in driver's ed - so I had absolutely no idea what I was looking at! Luckily, they're pretty intuitive, so I survived the ordeal 😉
I think traffic circles are brilliant and am really happy to see them become more prominent in my part of the country.
@@moonbear5929 I feel another reason we have so many roundabouts in suburban areas is that it helps slow down drivers. No point speeding for a few 100 meters, slow down for a roundabout, speed for a few seconds, roundabout and so on. Most roundabout you can take just under the speed limit too, so it's ideal to go the right speed

There's a roundabout in a county next to mine. I've had to drive through it a few times. I've always hated it. I never knew what to do. So thanks for this. lol I know now.
My local city got a few roundabouts about 15 years ago, and it took years for local drivers to figure them out.

Americans are not taught how to use a roundabout as it’s not common, nor are they taught it in driving education.
Videos like this are needed to help them understand how they work.

I’m from CA. , We’ve has these for as long as I can remember . I didn’t realize , that they weren’t a normal thing all over .
It's a normal thing, there are just some chipmunk brain individuals who can't comprehend such a thing meeting it the first time, apparently it's not in the driver's license exam :D
There are actually not that common in the USA there are around 3000 roundabouts in total.

Standard here in Ireland. You's will get the hang of it my American friends, it's easy. Give way to those who are already on the roundabout, an give way to traffic in your left .we drive on right side of the road so it's opposite for us, we give way to those coming from the right.😉have fun an safe driving ✌️
I lived in Blackfoot,Idaho in 1994,that's 25 miles south of Idaho Falls;I now live in the Ft. Wayne market,which has about a dozen roundabouts;where Carmel,Indiana,has about 140 roundabouts and a population of 105,000 people.

Idahoans, don’t worry they’re easy to get used to. This video is helpful with its 2 rules! Definitely remember those rules! One thing the towns off our interstates had to learn was to put in lots of good lighting for the nighttime. People couldn’t see and didn’t know those rules, thus lots of wrecks. Then there will always be the complainers! Haven’t people learned life is difficult and then you die?! Lol Good luck! I’m off to check out that big series of roundabouts in the UK!

@Angel Well believe it or not, there are millions of people who live in rural areas where roundabouts don't exist. Some of us barely have traffic lights in our town, let alone roundabouts haha

Much better at keeping traffic moving so much much quicker than lots of traffic lights. They should have had a bit in tbe video about at what point to switch your signals for each exit, especially for anything after the third exit, that's really the only time there are any accidents, bumps or road rage when people switch their signals too late or not at right time and you don't know what the car in front is doing. Its the only part that gives any difficulty to learner drivers (in the UK anyway.)

A roundabout was made in the community where I used to live. One of the highway engineers told of a driver that made a left turn upon entering the roundabout. When I was kid, it was called a traffic circle.
A traffic circle and a roundabout are not the same thing btw.

@@kirknitz3794 the thing is that there is misused cuz a traffic circle has traffic lights to enter and also inside, like the new York one, Columbus circle; while the roundabout has none or just in the entrance (and the lights in the entrance aren't to control the traffic, instead are to let pedestrians cross when there are no cars detected by the sensors).
I see there's only in Russia one different rule of passing the roundabout. Leaving the roundabout could be done from extreme right lane only.

stick to this. If you are turning right on the first exit then stay in the right hand lane. same if you are going straight ahead.
Go into the left hand lane for taking the 3rd exit or going back to the road where you came from.

No, definitely not where I am. We have one roundabout in a town around 25 miles away and that thing has always terrified me. It’s the only one I’ve ever been through.

They don't have very good road marking. Why you erase lane? In proper roundabout, left lane for turn left, right lane for go right, middle/right lane for go straight, then just follow the lane markings

They are fine until they fill the center with decorations and you can’t see. Then they want them at every stop sign in town. Then they end up costing millions after a few get installed..Government beuarocracy at work.
Decorations in center are made so it looks nicer and that you would focus on your left, instead of worrying what's happening on other side
It is actually saving money in the long run. They are much safer causing less traffic accidents and congestion plus you save electricity in the long term.

We have a saying in America and it is don't fix it if it ain't broken. Please stop wasting our taxe paying dollars on silly things like round abouts.
Statistics prove that roundabouts are safer, the traffic is more smooth and in long run they are cheaper than having traffic lights on the road... so I think it's wise to have more roundabouts in the US. And one more point - ecology (I know, you don't care about ecology in the US) - cars don't need to stop so often so there is less exhaust fumes around the roundabouts.
