    Question - Do you have any tips for new drivers learning to navigate roundabouts? 22:56
    Salutations 23:13
    Blooper 23:46
    Are you taking a road test in a car, bus, or big truck?
    In Australia, China, the UAE (United Arab Emirates), Europe and the UK (United Kingdom) roundabouts are commonplace. However, in North America, roundabouts are only beginning to make an appearance on the driving landscape. Consequently, new & veteran drivers alike have difficulty negotiating these new roadway structures.
    Probably the biggest challenge for the uninitiated driver is that at roundabouts you have to be prepared to both stop and go…more or less at the same time. Thus, the key to successfully navigating roundabouts is to scan and observe well in advance. And as you’re approaching the roundabout and scanning, “cover the brake”, that way if a vehicle barges into the roundabout, you’ve cut down your reaction time and can bring the vehicle to a safe stop.
    Roundabouts have several advantages:
    1) Roundabouts have fewer points of conflict; therefore there are fewer crashes than at conventional intersections
    2) These move higher number of vehicles through an intersection
    3) Because vehicles are not stopping, these reduce urban noise.
    When negotiating roundabouts, locate the roundabout as far down the road as possible. Slow to the recommended speed. Take note of the direction in the roundabout, which is indicated by signs and arrows. If driving on the right, the direction is counter-clockwise; if on the left, the direction is clockwise. Take note of any signage or road markings that direct traffic through the roundabout.
    Importantly, have a plan before you begin driving and know where you want to travel. With good planning, you're going to be able to successfully navigate the roundabout because you know where you're going and which direction you want to travel in the roundabout.
    When navigating the roundabout, cut the circle in half. For those driving on the right side of the road, everything on the right side of the roundabout will be either a right turn, or a straight through. Everything on the left side of the half-circle will either be a left turn or a 'U' turn.
    When signalling at a roundabout, it is the same as you would signal at a conventional intersection. If you are going to turn right, signal right as you approach the roundabout. If you are going to turn left or make a 'U' turn, signal left as you are approaching the roundabout. If you are proceeding straight through, you don't have to signal.
    When exiting the roundabout, signal right "if practicable". "If practicable" means if you can do it signal right just prior to exiting the roundabout.
    If an emergency vehicle appears when you’re in the roundabout, do NOT stop in the roundabout. Exit the roundabout at the earliest possible exit and stop there. With this technique you are not going to block the path of the emergency vehicle.
    Good luck on your road test!

    I’m from the Uk , my biggest gripe on roundabouts is people here in Canada just drive on and drive off the roundabout no signalling ! It makes it much easier if people would signal. Because if you’re coming on and they are going to turn on to road you’re just coming out of you maybe could have carried on if you new what their intentions were.

    I"m 71 and just passed my behind the wheel test because of your videos. I actually did have a roundabout on the examination and did fine. Many thanks! Your videos gave me more confidence. Initially, I was a bit nervous because the last time I had a behind the wheel, I was 19 years old. Thinking about all your tips while driving really helped and still does after my exam. My test mistakes were for driving too slow (I was very careful not to go over the posted speed limits, but perhaps I was too cautious) and for turning off my signal too soon after completing a lane change. The examiner said I should have kept the signal on longer after making a lane change. Nevertheless, I passed the first time and am very grateful I found your videos!!! Because I am just getting Glaucoma and Cataracts, I will be taking the California behind the wheel test every 2 years from now on. You can be sure, I'll continue to use your great resource as a mature driver. With much appreciation, Margie U.

    I totally pulled a Griswald's move at a roundabout on my last road test. I was such a nervous wreck rather than making a left turn as instructed, I just drove right around...talk about humiliating! Thx for this!!! ☺

    One topic i did not see in this video is driving next to trucks or longer than average vehicles, You never want to drive next to them when approaching or in the roundabout, they usually need most of the space in the roundabout to make a turn, and if they are turing right they may need part of the left lane to make the right turn.
    Other than that very informative. Great tutorial.

    Rick, these roundabouts look quite small. Here in Kitchener Ontario we have some bigger and busier ones comparatively. And soo many crashes have happened here, it's unbelievable.

    2:53 about the Arc de Triomphe roundabout in Paris: According to the French Highway Code, it is not classified as a classical roundabout (Giratoire), it’s a “rond-point” meaning that it is a roundabout where the basic right of way rule is applied (Row to the right), meaning that the vehicles entering that roundabout have the right of way. Also in every avenue linking the roundabout there’s a traffic light for pedestrians a dozen meters from the roundabout that actually controls the flow of traffic entering the roundabout. Lastly, in case of an accident inside that roundabout, there’s a default 50/50 split on the insurance claim

    I was in that Victoria traffic circle tonight behind someone who came to almost a complete stop before entering the first one and almost a complete stop before leaving the second one. I've this lesson now at my driving school.. and it's like opposite here when 2 lanes in roundabout (which is very common) it's like 95%+ people that leaving roundabout at the right lane, since driving on right lane is the default lane unless you going to turn left short after roundabout. So when turning left you go inside on left lane in roundabout and at the last one you pass by you drive towards that triangle/split changing to right lane just like normal changing lane, and then driving out on the right lane.
    It's so common that I even didn't know or at least think about it's possible to drive out on the left lane, since I never seen (or noticed) someone ever done that here (sweden).

      Hi Brent Scott - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. I'm not familiar with the Swindon "magic" roundabout; however, I just looked it up and those are complex indeed. It would be important to follow both the road signs and the lane markings to successfully navigate those roundabouts that move traffic from 5 or more roads. I suspect that these types of roundabouts are safer than a conventional intersection and move more traffic that one controlled with traffic lights. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    if there is a large truck on the roundabout give them plenty of room they will need all the space to get around. in the UK we call the small ones mini-roundabouts if you are driving anything larger than a small car, go round the best you can and be aware of vehicles around you

  • @ollylewin
    @ollylewin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    In the UK on the bigger roundabouts its common to see a lane specifically for going left (right in the US). This means you dont have to slow for traffic to your right (or left). Makes everything much quicker. For most in the UK and Europe roundabouts just aren't a big deal. They just work.

    Hi Rick,
    Just to set you straight about mini roundabouts or as you called them upside down dishes in the UK. I have just retired as a Driving Instructor in the UK after 16 years. The law in the UK states that ALL types of cars, SUV's and 4x4's MUST PASS ROUND the central marking unless your vehicle is physically incapable (Highway Code,UK), hence it being either dish shaped or some are completely flat on the road. These mini roundabouts are put at Junctions (Intersections) as a traffic calming measure to make motorists Slow Down at Junctions for Safety Reasons. In the UK most people ignore this and go bouncing over it or go to the right on the wrong side of the road to avoid the hump (assholes). As for roundabouts as you were explaining if in the UK we were going straight we would signal in the middle of the last but one exit to tell waiting or approaching traffic our intentions so as not to cause anyone to stop unnecessarily keeping the traffic flowing. I have been watching your videos for a couple of years and they have helped me when driving in the US in the last 3 years on vacation. Great videos very informative. Malc Advanced Driving Instructor, UK.

    12:30 if you want to go straight on the left lane, what do you do if there are cars on the right lane turning left? Do you stop and wait until it's clear (blocking traffic behind you)?
    Edit: Looks like right lane usually only go straight or turn right, but it would be scary if a new driver messes up and turns left on the right lane

  • @jonwz

    Suggest a simple roundabout rule: always yield to traffic on your left. Especially important with two lane roundabouts. If you're in the outer lane, always watch and yield to traffic in the inner lane (your left).

    I live in New England, and they're building both single-lane *and* double-lane roundabouts in my area. I don't mind the single-lane ones, but the double-lane ones are insane. I still don't understand how, if I'm trying to go straight through but in the left lane, a driver merging into the roundabout slightly after me is going to avoid hitting me as I cross their lane to go into the left "straight-ahead" lane. I know the stats say these are safer, but I think these big ones are nuts. We had perfectly good traffic signals at this particular, very busy intersection. I'm watching videos about how to do it right, but I know many more people aren't, especially drivers from states where they don't have these (we get a lot of visitors to this area). Nightmare. (Plus, I'm concerned about those Americans who hate the very idea of "yielding." Really not good.)

  • @WackyJackyTracky
    @WackyJackyTracky 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This left blinking is confusing for the cars coming from the left who may dont know where you entered the roundabout. Thats why we in germany never signal when enter but only signal right when we exit

  • @stephaniearteaga7308
    @stephaniearteaga7308 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Once you are in the roundabout you have the right of way right? It’s my understanding that you just have to yield when you are going to intersect in the roundabout. Please clarify this for me. Thank you!

  • @palco22
    @palco22 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    1) The first thing you must understand is the purpose or objective of the roundabout. To maintain traffic flow. You must maintain an appropriate slower speed (Lower than the street speed limit) You must obviously yield to traffic in the roundabout and carefully judge when to proceed into the roundabout. With normal traffic you should be able to adjust your approach speed and time the moment you enter. The biggest problem is the driver's attitude of 'I've got the right of way' and not allowing a smooth transition of traffic coming in or leaving the roundabout.
    What I noticed driving in Europe is how smooth the traffic flows in and out of the roundabouts. They have a completely different attitude on the road than most of the Americas. Unfortunately road rage is endemic and becoming an epidemic.
    (Side note) I encountered the 12 streets of the Place de l'Étoile roundabout in Paris and traffic does not stop with it's 10 lanes that circles the Arc de Triomphe. In most of Europe, signs are rare unlike here in Canada where we excel in signs ... every 20 feet !
    2) Never signal left entering a roundabout. All roundabouts are counterclockwise (left) ! You only signal right at the appropriate moment before leaving the roundabout by turning right.
    Interesting video, Thanks.

    Hi there... i'm from Romania(Europe) an we have a little problem whit roundabouts... the law it is not very clear when you have to change lanes in the roundabout. So, what i want to ask you is this. When you have a multilanes roundabout, when you change lanes you have to give way to the one driving on that lane, right?

    An excellent video on roundabouts, just the kind of information I was looking for.
    I am driving in Romania at present (my first drive in Europe), I particularly find the multi-lane (two lanes of traffic going in same directions) roundabouts very difficult and confusing, Could you give me more information on this ? I do know the basic rules of the roundabout, vehicles in the roundabout have the right of way, I used the technique of signaling in the roundabout just as you have mentioned in the video, but I am bit confused about lanes in the roundabout.
    For instance, are there specific lanes in which one needs to be before entering the roundabouts ?? Is it allowed to change lanes in the roundabouts?? For turning right, do I have to be in the inner lane or the outer??
    thanks

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi arbjful - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and query. Little doubt, the multi-lane roundabouts are going to be a bit tricky. If you have a multi-lane and there are 2 lanes exiting, than you can turn right from either the right or left lane; however, it is going to be easier to turn right from the right lane - and you are going to be safer because another driver may not see you signal. And driving in Romania, there is going to be a bit of a driving culture too, and for a bit I would suggest that you observe what other drivers are doing and go with that system with the bigger roundabouts. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Roundabouts have numerous advantages over the conventional 4-Way stop: 1) there are fewer points of conflict, therefore less crashes; 2) these move more traffic per hour; 3) there is less noise at roundabouts because not all cars have to stop. @smartdrivetest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nicole - You're simply turning your head 90° quickly. I believe you're having trouble because you're turning your head too slow. You're looking to see if there is anything in your blind area. And it is your peripheral vision that is attracted to light and movement. If there is something there, your perisperhal vision will pick it up, and then you will bring in your central vision, to inspect closer and decide if you have to take evasive action. So, just a quick 90° turn of the head for your peripheral vision to check. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      @@smartdrivetest Thank you so much Rick, this really helps. I think I am turning my head too slow because I'm afraid I'll miss something and drive into a pedestrian or cyclist. I live in Germany so there are a lot of cyclist all over.
      I'll sit in the car today and do the 90° shoulder check while someone is moving in the blind spot to build confidence that I will pick up any movement in my peripheral.
      Your videos and explanations are very helpful and clearly explained, thank you.

      Hi Nicole - Thank you for your reply. In the beginning, it can be daunting for sure to rely on your peripheral vision, but it works my friend. You are going to do well there in Germany with the cyclists. Where are you in Germany my friend? If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Hello, if you show up at a roundabout at the same time as another car which is on your left, do you have to wait for that car to enter the roundabout first like the rule od 4way stops ? Also do you have to wait for a car ob your left that arrived before you to enter the roundabout? Thanks!

      Legally you are required to yield to traffic IN the roundabout, not APPROACHING it, however if someone is approaching on your left quickly it may be safer to stop for them.

    I am from Nova Scotia, there is no indication in the book as to having to signal through the roundabout, just at the time of exit. Is what you are explaining related to all of Canada? is it mandatory?

      Hi Healthyliving - Thank you for your comment and query. And yes, this is related to Canada. Even though the driver's manual says you don't have to signal when you enter, I would highly recommend doing that just the same. If you signal your intentions when you enter, and when you exit the roundabout, it demonstrates to the examiner that you have due care & control of the vehicle which is the fundamental tenet of any road test. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
