Brompton Bikepacking Wild Camp. Hills! But I love hills! and sky, and space, & freedom, wild freedom

  • In May, I took my Brompton and my little tent and cycled through the Peak District, to go and see my Dad. There were a lot of hills - and quite a lot of inquisitive cows - along the way. I camped wild, close to Axe Edge Moor, high up at the watershed of two great river systems. And it was fantastic.
    Hills aren't easy, but I love them. Especially these hills, close to where I grew up. I don't know what it is - something to do with being up high, the sky, and the space, and solitude, and a feeling of wild freedom.
    And I hope you enjoy meeting my Dad! We are both being treated for cancer, and we both love being out on the bike.
    Hope you like the film!

    Hi Susanna .I have enjoyed and been inspired by you to get on a bike. This has resulted in my grandson joining me . Found your channel during lockdown . You are a daughter to be proud of and your love of family shows !! Your father is another inspiration to all us in our senior years . Just to let you know that I have never commented on anyone’s channel before . Seeing you with your father moved me to be brave and express a great thank you sharing your adventures with me 😊

    Wonderful Susanna and a lovely treat to see your Dad joining you along the way - 87 and still adventuring! I hope I’m still able and filled with the desire to keep playing with life as your Dad obviously is when I reach his age! You struck gold with your spacious camping views and the pub grub looked worth all those hills to get to 😊 I had earmarked your first track ‘Just Do’ for a future video myself but you beat me to it - love the lyrics! It never occurred to me to dehydrate salmon before, amazing idea! You’re looking so fit and healthy which is fab to see 😍🎉 x

      Hello! Aw thank you for the lovely comment Miriam! yes I love those lyrics too! Oh I am looking forward to see what you do with that track too now haha! Ah yes the salmon was a bit of an experiment. I also had never thought of dehydrating fish but my husband gave me a book on dehydrating food for my birthday, and there was a whole section on fish, so I thought I would give it a try. Great! I have had it three times now. Haha. Thank you for writing!! Best wishes!!

      @@susannathornton That's so interesting you dehydrate your own food. I have various food intolerances so find it almost impossible to get the ready made dehydrated meals, but never really considered doing it myself. Must look into it.

    Hi Susanna, I found your Hk to UK video a couple of weeks ago, an amazing trip. Having worked in China between 81 and today the footage in rural China brought back a lot of memories. I am now working my way through your recent videos and enjoying them immensely. I too have had cancer and found that cycling and hiking helped me recover. You really are inspiring.
    This video soundtrack had me intrigued, I was sure the singer was Allison Krauss but saw in the credits it was Noomi Thorentsson, their voices are so similar they could be sisters. Thanks for sharing your rides, they are so enjoyable and so positive.

    Susanna,
    I’m finally catching up with your adventures. And what an adventure it was: Climbing over stone walls to camp (your rehab must include weight training), cycling 50 miles per day, and those hills, yikes (thank you for walking). And the best part was that you did all that to have lunch and visit with your dad. I’m sure he was thrilled.
    You have inspired me. I just finished a five day, train, cycle, plane trip with my Brompton on the Katy Trail in Missouri, US.
    Love seeing and hearing of your “escapades”.
    Peter
    P.S. Fifty mile days on the Brompton are tough, no matter where you are.

      @susannathornton  ปีที่แล้ว

Aw yeh I do do strength training, just basic stuff like press ups and things, which I am rubbish at, but use it or lose it isnt it!! Glad you enjoy the films! Lots more on the way. I am editing a whole bunch of rides I have been doing now, and soon Dad and me are gong off on an adventure together! Exciting! Happy cycling to you too!

    You really are so inspiring! I'm hoping to manage a trip on my new Brompton when I can ride far enough. I've only had it a few weeks after getting an e-bike last year and thinking a normal bike would improve my fitness. I've already changed the chainring for a 40T which helps with hills on the edge of the Pennines where I live but I'm just so slow to get very far. I'm struggling to see how I'll ever manage. Thank you for continuing to inspire me to keep trying.

      Hi Rachael! oh that all sounds great, big thumbs up to you getting to grips with an ebike, and now out there getting ready to tackle a few hills on a Brompton! crikey great. No need to do anything massive... A nice one-night trip - short distances, no stress, plenty of time, long sits and coffee stops, chatting with people, eating nice food - and on day two you're home by teatime, your first adventure done! Thanks for writing! Keep going! Wishing you lots of happiness out on the road! x

      Yeh it works great actually. Not my idea - I was hunting around for ideas on how to fix the Ortlieb on the rear rack, and saw this idea on the webpage of a guy called Shane. He used bungies as straps, but I think that would be quite wobbly - as he says himself. I use a ratchet strap with a cam buckle, pulled really tight, and it's great

    Greetings Susanna! The truth is that I have to mention that I love how you take time to connect with your environment. You enjoy everything, there are three particular shots of the video that I really liked… when you walk with your bike in a meadow full of tiny flowers and you mount your camera on the side of the bike, just beautiful little flowers!, when the cows approach curiously to you to observe you and the meeting with your father and pedal together, that is spectacular!!! I can't forget about the music either. Who sings? …there are moments where I feel lonely…

      @@jasonloke2219 Oh sounds fantastic Jason. I just looked at the map and I see you basically rode the whole way across South Korea... how brilliant. Wild camping too. I imagine it was a wonderful thing to do. Sometimes I really regret that I no longer live in Asia... so many things I didnt do. Well I enjoy thinking about it through you! Thanks for writing!

    Another epic adventure, Susanna. I was anxious when you had to negotiate a wall and barbed wire with your Brompton but, as ever, you succeeded! It’s all been said, but your honest appreciation of Nature and simply sitting watching a sunset reminds all I of us of how to value what is around us. So lovely to see your dad at the end cycling with you.
    Thank you so much 🚲

    Another spectacular video. Thankyou so much. Your dad is an inspiration at 87. Those views were amazing. Have you thought of fitting a smaller chainring for those hills? Easily done on the Brompton. I have two chainrings a 54t and a 38t. The 38t makes all but the steepest climbs possible. Take care.

    Just found your lovely channel! What a wonderful adventure! Do be very careful to avoid crossing fields of cows though. Most people don't realise how dangerous and aggressive they can be. Xx

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tinac! Yeah it was a relief to get to the other side of that wall. And I didn't take the public footpath back through the cowfield the next day. I just scrambled through the meadow I was in. I am not knowledgable about cows but I am scared of them as I've read about quite a few terrible incidents when they group together and get aggressive to walkers and so on. Thanks for writing! Hope you enjoy the channel!
