Brompton wild camp - cosy, dark night, and *baking scones* on my Trangia (it worked!)

  • I did this Brompton bikepacking wild camp adventure in late November, when the sunset was at 4pm, and it was cold. Not an obvious time to go on a cycle tour perhaps, but I wanted to see late autumn, when the last leaves are on the trees and the landscape is almost bare. My Dad and little brother were meeting for a pub lunch on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border, so I thought I'd join in, and cycle to the pub, camping wild on the way. I planned an easygoing two-day route through Staffordshire and Derbyshire. I love these kind of adventures actually, doing a journey that I want to do anyway, but going slowly, by bike, with my tent.
    The November night was going to be dark and long, but I had a couple of new ideas to make it extra warm and cosy. Hope you enjoy the film!
    A bit of background: Unfortunately my breast cancer came back earlier this year. On my previous bikepacking adventure, just after I finished chemo, I was quite weak and pretty much ground to a halt in the Derbyshire hills, as you might have seen. Since then, I've been doing more exercise to build myself up a bit - nothing fancy, just doing what the NHS recommend for adults each week, which is 150 mins moderate activity (eg walking, cycling) or 75 mins vigorous activity (eg running), and I am adding in (very) short sessions of circuit training, ie very vigorous. I am so grateful I can do all these things again. All pretty small scale and low key - sometimes seems kind of pathetically small! But it all adds up. When I started running, I could only run half a mile, but I have built it up slowly, and I can do two and a half miles now. And when I started circuit training - burpees and sit ups and whatnot, just at home - I could only do 3 minutes (nothing!!!! omg so hard) but over the weeks I have built it up to 8 minutes now. I'm not aiming to do marathons or race again or anything like that. I just want to be able to get out there confidently with my bike and tent - which itself feels like a brilliant tonic. Meanwhile the hospital have started me on hormone therapy and a treatment via vein to strengthen my bones. These are nothing like as nasty as chemo but have side effects too garhh. But exercise helps - as the hospital said it would - and I am doing OK on these so far. Good!
    Thank you so much for all the good wishes! Let's all keep going! Happy New Year!

    I can’t tell you enough how much I enjoy your videos. The simplicity of your travels and the enjoyment that they provide is palpable. You have encouraged me to go on many a bike packing trip this year. I enjoy your camping segments as much as the biking . The meals you cook motivate me to be more creative in my own camping experience- but I must admit I’ve got a long way to go to match you! As always thanks for sharing.

      Hi Sandy! Thank you for the lovely message! Congrats on becoming a Grandpa by the way! About the scones, I got the idea from a swedish outdoor cook book that my husband (who is swedish) gave me. People on here have kindly suggetsed other things eg welsh cakes and damper bread that can be baked on a Trangia (I didn't know what damper bread was so I looked it up and it looks lovely, Australia soda bread), so I am tempted to try baking some other things too now, it was brilliant on that cold day having hot fresh bread outdoors (well sort of bread). Anyway, thank you for watching and Happy New Year to you too!!

    Its wonderful that you're feeling stronger and healthier, and were physically up for this adventure, your exercise regime is working!
    Your wonderful videography captured the natural beauty and peacefulness of where you travelled, and once again you found an idyllic camping spot.
    Your scones looked delicious and I don't doubt that all of your viewers wished they could have joined you in sampling one, hot, with melting butter!

    Hot scones (Mmmmmmm my favorite pastry) and hot coffee, in front of a beautiful landscape, after filling your lungs with fresh air, I call it... Happiness! And you seem to me, dear Susanna, really good and fit. This bodes well for this new year that I wish you the happiest. By the way, you use the same lantern as me; It also illuminates and reduces the moisture of the tent. Thank you for the trip. 🤗

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rogberube! aw you put it so nicely... Yes! Happiness! Ahh! Oh that is great that you find that the little UCO lantern also helps with condensation. I read about that aspect of it, good to know that you find it works. So cute aren't they haha. I love mine. I was also glad about the warmth from it, I mean one candle is not much, but I felt that it did make a difference. Actually I have since bought the little reflector brim thing, that you can clip onto the lantern, cos I found it hard to read by the light of the lantern as it is. It seems the brim might mean I can sit and read which would be just so cosy and lovely wouldn't it ahhh! Looking forward to getting out again! Thank you for writing! Happy New Year!

      @susannathornton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Stuart! Ah yeh, a lot of people have mentioned ebikes... The thing is I know ebikes have brought some people who'd stopped cycling back into it, and that is great, and have brought altogether new people into cycling and that is great too, and ebikes are helping people keep on cycling when they cant manage otherwise, and that is fantastic too. And I've messed around on friends' ebikes for fun, and had fun, but I'm just not interested in using one for what I do. Dunno, but for me, I just want things simple, and even if it is harder there is kind of a simple pleasure in getting around by my own basic pedal power. Right now after all this chemo and whatnot, I'm building my strength back up through cycling and other stuff, and that's a huge pleasure in itself. And I want to keep on being able to ride a basic pushbike as long as possible... Plus of course when I am camping there's nowhere to charge up a battery, and I have lots of longer tours in mind, when I can hardly keep my phone and camera juiced up never mind a bike battery. So yeh, I am an acoustic cyclist, or whatever the expression is. And hope I am lucky enough to keep going like that for ages. Anyway, yeh, there you are... Oh and that is a nice little idea about the mesh for the scones! Anyway, I have gone on a bit haha! thanks for writing! Happy New Year!

    I wasn’t expecting those scones to have worked! What a great idea, I think I might try it when I’m camping again. I’ve planned a few Brompton escapes from for this year, ranging from day trips to short cycle camps such as the Hadrian’s Wall route. Looking to begin in March with the first leg of the Pennine Cycle way Derby to Buxton, assuming that the trains aren’t cancelled.

      Yeh I was also really surprised those scones worked..! They did look really sort of grey and greasy and kind of hopeless when I put them in the pan... Oh that's great that you've got a calendar of cycle camps planned, they sound fab.

    Hey Susanna. Nice one. Looked pretty wet in places. Interesting landscape. I’ve driven through that area many times but never seen those backwaters. Loved the scone scene. X

      Hi Vin! thanks for watching! yeh wet! the road was completely flooded in places - which would have been nice to get into the film but unfortunately I just got lovely sound of the bike forging through water but no images as camera was facing the wrong way! Oh dear. Hey ho. Thanks for writing! Hope you are keeping well and wishing you a brilliant year in 2023!

    What a lovely video to watch at new year! It was great to see the smile on your face! I think 40 miles is quite a long way on a Brompton, especially when you have off road sections. The scones looked tasty, it looked cosy in your tent and lovely scenery. Very best wishes for 2023 from Jenn and Russ. PS We have Brompton’s and we always love to watch your videos. 😊
