      @Donald Leider, that sounds like a sensible plan! I've already seen "Hoovie" do a video in cold weather using the Lightning he had for a short time. He towed an empty trailer and then the trailer loaded with his small classic car. IIRC the small car weighed maybe 1,500 lbs and the trailer may have been about 1,100 lbs. I want to say he lost around 50%+ of range as a result. I've also seen a video where "new charging stations" were built and it was cold/snowing and suddenly people couldn't even charge because the stations were malfunctioning.
      This guy said he turned on the heat ~5mins before leaving so it'd be like remote starting but Id like to see more testing on this, which clearly the heater was soaking up the juice...
      So I wonder how much range would drop with an electric vehicle's heater system heating the interior to a comfy temp in various outside temperatures and the amount of time it takes to achieve the desired temp, comparative to an average combustion engine vehicle of comparable size. I mean some of us recently saw negative double digit temps when we got up in the morning to go out... Also how much is the range reduced by running the AC on hot summer days to get the car cooled down from the sometimes 180°+ interior temps... The fact is, these all-electrics are still NOT practical and they're hardly "saving da planiiit!!" when they're utilizing power for charging which is still largely generated from the consumption of fossil fuels. Can't forget the toxic lithium for the batteries & the high sale prices, gov't subsidies to lower that cost and then insurance/tax which likely are still very high but I imagine they offer subsidies as incentives for people to buy them all at net-contributing taxpayer/subscriber expense.
      We also have to consider that before the winter cold hit, California was pushing it's "ALL-ELECTRIC!!" agenda but then quickly told consumers, "PLEASE DON'T CHARGE YOUR CARS NOW!! THE POWER GRID IS OVERLOADED FROM THE HEATWAVE!!" And how do they "think" this will "improve" with shutting down more coal/natural gas power plants WHILST simultaneously "DUMPING COMBUSTION ENGINE VEHICLES AND PUTTING ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLES ON THE ROADS!!" and thereby needing to tax the power grid even more. It's a $$$ racket because we see these same "activists" still utilizing the climate control systems in their palatial palaces and places of business, being chauffeured in their combustion engine motorcades, taking flights on air-polluting private jets to travel THOUSANDS of miles to "receive an environmental conservation award"... Absolutely hypocritical.

      @@matthewd.1474 , how they gonna roll? Right onto the backs of combustion engine powered tow trucks like many of them are now due to people not planning trips properly as well as unexpected weather events and power station charging issues.
      Guys we know that politicians and their elitist criminal cohorts are trying to exert even more control over the populous but all of this is absolute nonsense. It's not to be ignored because they are control freaks with an agenda but it's up to "WE THE PEOPLE" to fight back & it starts with elections of local to fed reps. Going beyond that is where it will get increasingly nasty but it is a likely scenario.
      As for combustion engines, there are still such engines powering flight as well as sea faring vessels and I'm pretty sure that the Presidential motorcade of one Joe Bribery is NOT "all-electric now". Certainly AF1 and AF2 are not and yet that fool just had the "Omnibus bill" FLOWN out to the Virgin Islands for him to sign whilst thousands of citizens sit in airports or have to find alternate ways to get to their destinations. Talk about HYPOCRISY when it comes to "ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION AND THE REDUCTION OF FOSSIL FUEL POLLUTION!!" but then Transportation Secretary Buttgig is surely handling things right, "pressuring" airlines, "You should be flying people to their destinations or issuing refunds [you meanies]!!" -_-

Now in the winter deep freeze, anything at-20 or lower, I lose around 40% range, heat is a big draw. I'm not disappointed or anything, I knew the trade off, I had a 2015 platinum new, and in under 7 years I put on over 330k on it, in 2016 I spent over $17k in fuel. For me a EV was about saving $$ , period. And I have, 10mons later, I've spent just under 2300 on charging stations and at home, and I just rolled over 21,000 km.

      I'm certain I wouldn't have purchased my lightning platinum or any all electric vehicle if I couldn't charge at home. I just don't believe it would be worth it, if I had to pay $.31 to $.43 per kwh. Currently I pay $.075/kwh in winter & $.12/kwh summer. With avg 1.7/mpk that's $.044/mile winter & avg 2/mpk that's $.06/mile summer. I normally don't compare this to gas prices, just how much I'm paying per mile. For nearly a 7000 lb vehicle these are low operating costs, not even considering the little to no maintenance that's required.

    Thank you for these videos. I bought a mach e select sr for the following reasons; 1 it was available and 2 to see if I could get by with the smaller battery since the price increases with the lightning. I too lost range during the winter months however I am able to condition the battery since I charge at home. After a year and a half wait it looks like my lightning will be here any day now. My experience with the select allowed me the confidence to order the sr battery even with the temps here in Delaware.

      @@EVTruckLOG When spring comes your truck will be fine. Just keep the battery between 5% and 90%, or better between 10% and 80%. I think most manufacturers build in enough buffer that you won't see degradation affect your range for many years, but if you avoid charging to 100% very often it will be good even longer. I charged my Fiat to 100% every day because it only had 85 mile total range, but it could still do that after 5 years. In the summer it could even go 100 miles, but in winter it was closer to 70. My Tesla is nearly 8 years old and has only lost 6 miles of range and I only charge above 80% 3-4 times a year. It seems like winter affects the Lightning more than my Tesla, but it's just bigger and heavier. My XLT SR will be built in January

    Thanks for sharing your video. I read through a number of comments and although EV may be the future, the simple cost and time to replace the ICE fleet will take years, plus I expect that people will choose to hold on to their ICE vehicles longer. Much work to be done on the infrastructure. Fossil fuels will be with us for a long time, simply because if nothing else, they are needed to create all the "free fuel". Solar is a long way away as a primary source and wind is limited to certain markets. And the lead time for nuclear puts it in the future. I expect that these govt mandates to prohibit ICE sales will be interesting to watch as we get closer to the actual effective date. I want to invest in an ICE dealership just across the state line from California. Bottom line is that its not just a one size fits all solution. The other day I was not driving so I starting looking for EV vehicles as we drove around town. I spotted 2 in an hour of driving. Not going to happen anytime soon in GA and fortunately we don't plan on moving to the Left Coast.

You had a relatively short drive, and in that time it had to heat your cabin from freezing to comfort. If you had driven longer, that initial heat up would have been a much smaller percentage of your total power consumption. Once up to temp it likely won't use very much power to maintain. Analyzing this level of information takes a little getting used to.

    Cold has a affect on everything. Reduces fuel mileage on ICE vehicles due to them having to adjust fuel mixture and causes all kinds of issues with batteries. I think with EVs it is going to be all about the electric accessories and how they play into it. Heated seats, steering wheel, climate control, defrosters, stereo/infotainment, lights, charging phones, etc will just eat into the overall range of an EV. That all has some affect as well in ICE vehicles due to more drag on the alternator but minimal in comparison. Good luck!

    • @tomooo2637
      @tomooo2637 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The EPA gives an official reduction of 15% for ICE car for moderate cold -10C which is about the same for a Tesla with heat pump, ie the loss in range is about the same for ICE and good EV. Some EV's are better some are worse with range loss.
      The main loss for an ICE engine is that they are tuned for adiabatic design to use 15-20C outside temperature - this the tuning based on the air temperature for the input air into engine and its effect on combustion, and thus compression resulting from this combustion.

      When an ICE is at operating temps. (after everything warms up) the only variable affecting power and fuel consumption should be intake air temperature. That being said, the colder air gets, the denser it gets. That should translate, in a modern fuel injected ICE, to more power and efficiency, due to the denser charge of air that means at the same volume of air their will be more oxygen. So wherever this information is coming from, it sounds like bs, because it makes no sense. Unless I'm missing a variable, which I could be, but I don't think so.
      And I don't care if it was put out by the government, that only makes it more sus.

    • @tomooo2637
      @tomooo2637 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@glennjames7107 Wong on multiple accounts :
      1) Both EV and ICE engines need to warm up, this is the biggest hit on range in the cold. This has nothing to do with heating passengers - which is very quick in an EV, but the battery and ICE engine both need to be up to operating temperature which takes longer in the cold. While the engine is cold the ECU has to maintain a rich mixture (see 2 also) to stop the engine stalling. Remember the old manual chokes in cars
      2) Although cold air is denser, it requires more fuel to maintain the stoichiometric ratio of fuel air ratio - so denser air needs more fuel - cos that is how engines work - wrong amounts of fuel mix cause major problems. You are only thinking of "how much compression", but that is 1 dimensional thinking, engine operation is much more complicated than that.
      3) ICE engines have an operating temperature, and there will be a threshold of temperature outside where too much heat is lost through the block preventing the engine ever reaching proper working temperature. This generally affects more efficient ICE engines earlier (temperatures wise)- like diesel engines rather than big and very inefficient low compression ratio big block US engines.
      4) All oil is more viscos as lower temperature and ICE engines have a lot more transmission components (a gear box ) than an EV car. This loss is significant and effects efficiency
      4) The CAT in a petrol car has an operating temperature of around 250C - 400C and in the cold (and wet - where splash water cools it down) it may NEVER reach this temperature. When not at operating temperature the ECU puts more fuel in the engine so more unburnt fuel gets to the CAT to raise its temperature to increase the catalytic effect. This has a huge effect on the efficiency of petrol engines in the cold (and heavy rain) as the ECU is trying to get the CAT up to temperature.
      There are many other minor reasons, but hopefully you get the point (probably not) So you see, the efficiency of modern ICE engines is not a simple 1 dimensional problem, and as tested by independent testers - even when warm - the typical ICE engine is around 15% worse efficiency around 0C (32F) compared to 20C/68F.

    I have a Bolt EV and just drove it 300+ miles last week at -18F no problems at all including using a L3 fast charger. Out of a 286 mile range I lose about %20 range in temps like this. Where SEVLOG (and many others) makes his mistake is he turns on the heater with the truck sitting. It takes a LOT more power to bring the cabin up to temp than maintain it. When SEVLOG brings the cab up to temp he basically claims that's the level of power the heater will use the entire trip which is not accurate at all. If you worried about power used to warm your car, then turn it on while it's still plugged in and let the cab warm up before unplugging. It's not normally a issue unless you want to take a long trip with as many miles as you can between stops.

      Mine definitely never returned the available power level even after 50 miles. It returned only after I plugged in at level 2. I have not seen it go low as 70%. Did you get the max tow package by any chance? I know it had the second pump for cooling but I wondered if it also delivers heating that way.

      @@EVTruckLOG That's a good point the lightning only has electric cab heating (no heat pump) I know the air dampers totally close in the winter so do they use electric heat to precondition the battery too or does that use a heat pump to warm the battery.

    Thank you. That was very interesting. EV is probably not a great choice here in Canada. 😀

      I’ve been driving EVs in Canada since 2011 and over 500,000 kms, they do great in winter in most day to day cases. Saw a Lighting in PEI over the summer on our Ottawa-PEI roadtrip.

      @@paulcamire Thanks, Paul. Very interesting. I have seen one blue one on the road and one black one at the dealer. They look very interesting. Thanks for your input. Cheers!

    I have a dirty little secret. There is a number of battery devices that restrict their charge to 84%. Why? The pros know that charging those batteries past 84% will shorten their life! Hey, my son's EV went loopy the other day. Why? The 12 Volt "regular" start battery went bad after a year. Batteries are funny.

    In a severe blizzard don't EVEN get stuck in an EV! What if there's a blackout? They're getting more common these days!
