I like how you showed John Singer Sargent. He’s a great example of how great a painting can be without blending at all.

I have started to paint my first ever portrait 2 months ago. And I challenged myself to try and not blend.
I have now covered 90% of the canvas and only blended a tiny bit. (Couldn’t help myself). But now I regret the little bit I did blend (both eyes). I now see how muted it made the eyes. (Her eyes were a dark green, not they are a light grey).

Oil paints are very expensive, BUT if you look closely you can actually acquire good quality oil paints for very cheap! If you live near a Michael's you can purchase a paint set by the brand artist loft for $5.00 they have all the primary colors. For a medium I personally use linseed oil which is only $6.00 for a quart at home depot. Hope this helps!

I greatly admire your approach to color mixing and how clean and organized your overall approach is.
Can you comment on the importance of the size and type of hair of the brushes you use. Ive noticed that several artists that paint in this realistic style use very small rounds. perhaps as small as a number 2. Also does the hair influence your work much? hog bristles vs. sable hair vs synthetic.

    So to summarize:
    1. Mix mid-tones on a palette first, then place on canvas where it's needed. Your palette should have a huge variance of almost ALL hues/values on it before it touches canvas.
    2. Either place paint on canvas as solid color strokes (that from far away blend together better), or place two colors next to one another on canvas, and gently brush them together. But be careful of "washing out" the color with too much blending, causing many flat areas.
    3. Use an appropriate amount of paint. Although you didn't show it, with the size brushes you have, it appears like you used about 1/4 to 1/2 a pea's size. For a future tutorial, please show how much paint you have loaded on a brush? (ofcourse, for bigger brushes you'll need more, but I digress).
    Other somewhat related questions:
    1. What references are you using to color match? Do you have a photo? A still life? A person there? Or is this all from your head, and you're using other sources for value/tone selection?
    2. Do you use mediums or solvents to prepare most paint before applying (based on layer, Fat over Lean)? Or is this alla-prima, and you use minimal/no mediums or solvents to paint?
    Thank you for this.

painting in general is NOT hard, ITS not easy either. That it takes talent sure , of course, but more so, IT TAKES a lot of dedication and years of practice whether through a school or self taught, you have to practice and put in the hours and then you'll see progress, but YOU're style of art is your style unless you train to paint like the masters, then you will paint beautifully but YOu'll likely paint like everyone else. Sometimes that kind of art can look kind of plastic, but its a very high form of art. My favorite is impressionism I must say. thank you. Great videos.
