- In this oil painting tutorial, realist painter Alex Tzavaras talks about how to paint edges.
Edges are one of the fundamental principals of painting from life. Painters create 3D form using light or dark tones, or values. The term edges, refers to the transitions between the areas of light or dark in a painting. For example, a hard outline of a light object silhouetted against a dark background, or the gradual transition from light to shadow on a round object. Understanding how edges work, is essential for achieving a really lifelike representation of what we see.

konanoobiemaster we can stand watching a lot....we need to see real life deem as and the mistakes real artists over on and how they do it...i can give you names of artists that have realized that and the subscription count has gone way up. The least interesting artist are the ones that basically show off there finished product as though [no problem man I'm good and you'll never get there].

What separates a good teacher from a great one is they're talent for explaining complex concepts and choosing what will improve theyre work the most based on what gives an artist more choices and control over the work. I for one will never stop learning , and I also like to review and revisit techniques like this one , and also the fact that shadow edges or boundaries should appear softer , and where the light hits an object that edge should appear a bit sharper. As well as keeping some shadows transparent Thx 4 another 👍 video .

There aren't as many soft edges in landscape painting (apart from clouds) and you normally see more edge variety, say around the edges of trees, the nearer they are to you.
