  • One of my favorite things about moving to Laramie is that I got to see an animal I had never heard off and ever siince never ceased to amaze me: the pronghorn.
Here is a video of a herd (Antilocapra americana, US: /ˈprɔːŋ-/), Steffi H., Cody P. and I saw this weekend near the Snowies, Wyoming
Pronghorn also known as speedgoat, is the only survivor of the superfamily Giraffoidea in the Americas. Yes, pronghorn's closest living relatives are the giraffes and okapi!!!
Researchers think that pronghorns are today one of the fastest living animals as a result of having to defeat in speed the now extinct American cheetah (John Byers 1998). Yet, their speed does not appear to help them in facing contemporary challenges such as crossing fences. Many pronghorn get injured by barbed wire if they do not die first getting hit by cars while trying to cross roads.
How can we prevent their extinction in the Anthropocene? Two management actions in favor of pronghorn and other wildlife are: the installation of barbless wire fences (or removing fences when possible and the construction of wildlife crosses over highways within their home ranges.
