Pronghorn Antelopes running at full pace in Bailey County south of Muleshoe, Texas on April 6, 2010 in West Texas. Pronghorns are the second fastest land mammal in the world.
they are known to hold top speed longer than cheetahs. They are also known to have the highest vo2max (Maximum volume of oxygen intake) of all animals. Fascinating animals.
If every animal on Earth raced a marathon, the winner would be an antelope. They are literally the best distance runners on Earth. They can maintain 60 miles per hour for a few miles and 30 miles per hour for very long distances.
Cheetahs clock in a bit faster at 65-76, but can only run that speed for a couple hundred yards. These Pleistocene leftovers can run 55-65 or so (and I believe the lighter females even a bit faster) for miles and, slowing down just a bit, can still keep a rapid clip for tens of miles. A really fantastic creature. When you're looking at one, you're essentially looking tens of thousands of years in North America's past.
true, they currently run 20 mph faster than the next fastest north american animal, (wolves i believe) obviously they evolved to out run a cheetah. what's fascinating is they've maintained this speed for 10,000 years without needing it.
that does not apply in most evolutionary cases. Their speed will probably decrease in 10.000's of years, unless this insane speed is still usefull for something. It's commonly referred to as "use it or lose it".
And now deep thoughts with Jack Handy: Keep in mind that if you converted how much money you can make in 1 hour and simply do that every hour of every day of my life, you will be rich.
Interesting you should say that! You see, the reason pronghorns run so ridiculously fast is because, up till about 11,000 years ago, they DID have to outrun cheetahs. I'm referring to American Cheetahs, which were more closely related to pumas than African cheetahs, but were very similar. It's weird because I was JUST reading about American Cheetahs a few minutes ago, which is what prompted me to look up pronghorns, which is where I saw your incredibly fortuitous comment!

Before the last ice age, there were giant cheetahs in North America. Pronghorns are remnants from the ice age, so they are adapted to outrun the long-extinct cheetahs.
If the cheetah are the sprinter of the animal kingdom, pronghorn antelopes are the marathon runners. They have the endurance to sustain their speed for miles, making them I believe the second fastest animals on land.
Pronghorn are the fastest mammals in North America. They can maintain a steady speed of around 55km/h for over 6 kilometres and reach sprinting bursts of about 72km/h
In this video they are running at cruising speed. I've seen them run like that for miles. When they are in full sprint they hold their heads lower and there gait is longer. gorgeous footage but they aren't even close to top speed here. it's amazing to see this because it sort of shows adaptive evolution. Thompson's gazelles reach 50 or so mph and they evolved to be able to get away from African cheetahs. One can sort of surmise that pronghorns co-evolved with American cheetahs and run faster than thompson's.... theoretically we can make a guess that the larger American cheetah must have been slightly faster than it's African cousins.
probably the heat in africa had something to do with that, risk of overheating was probably much less in north america and so the american cheetah could possibly reach higher speeds and maintain those speeds. just a wild guess though, i really have no clue
