- Paul McCartney, one of the most famous musicians of all time, rose to prominence 50 years ago as part of the British pop sensation The Beatles. From humble, working-class beginnings, McCartney, 70, is now one of the richest men in the world. He has even topped the bill at the White House, playing for US President Barack Obama.
In this episode, he sits down with Sir David for a full hour to tell Frost Over the World his own story of the band, and its break up; to discuss some of the highs - and a few lows - of his life; and to provide a glimpse into his world behind the headlines.

I liked the way David Frost did not intrude when Paul was speaking, but let him talk uninterrupted.
You often get interviewers who keep interrupting, and it's incredibly unprofessional. David Frost always knew what he was saying, and often used a simple rhetoric to get his guest to respond with longer answers. I'd recommend looking at Mark Lawson's interviews, he's also good.

When I was younger, I envied Paul because of his looks, his voice, his charm, his humor. Now that I'm older and hopefully wiser, I realize that Paul was and is one of those rare human beings who is a gift to mankind not only because of the music he gives us but for being a person we can all hope to emulate. A true delight to hear him talk about life's lessons and the joy he still has for performing for us. "Thank You, Paul" doesn't seem to be enough, does it?

Mccartney is an alcoholic and can be a bit incoherent and boring at times, its only natural for an interviewer to cut in to keep his dull rambling at a minimum. I would have liked to have heard more from the reporter. Beatle Paul is better at music than making talking. Thanks.

I consider myself one of the luckiest people in the world to have lived from the beginning of the Beatles in the USA. I was 13 when I saw you perform at Olympia Stadium in Detroit in 1964. What a truly beautiful time that was!! I have grown with you all, loved the music and all of you to this day. Thank you Paul, John, George, and Ringo for always being in my world with your song. This probably the BEST interview of Paul McCartney I've ever seen and David Frost made Paul very comfortable to open up.
Have you seen the Carpool Karaoke with James Corden? It's a beautiful mix of music, and wonderful stories. It's different than this one, but wonderful as well.

If you haven't seen Paul McCartney live I urge you to go see him. I saw him play Cardiff about 5 years ago. It was the best gig I have ever attended. A huge sing a long with all the audience involved. It was fantastic. McCartney isn't just a master musician he's a natural born entertainer too.
Reading the April 2015 issue of the Rolling Stone, Ringo's the cover boy and in the magazine he states that him (Ringo) and John lived close by and when they finished an album, they became very lazy. But soon enough, Paul would be calling and telling them 'let's get back to the studio, lads.' Ringo further states that all the music they put down was because of Paul's need to stay busy. Ringo said that we can thank Paul that 12 studio albums were produced, as well as many singles. That IS something to be thankful for! THANKS PAUL!!!
Water Falls George Harrison too was a perfectionist, but one who preferred to take longer in doing a song. Paul's domination was also the reason Harrison wanted to leave mostly. And we got to hear less George on the albums because of the other two.
StartabandRoxy Okay, sure, I'll concede that, though I never understood George's unrelenting grudge toward Paul, for his bossy ways and refusal to let George have more of his songs on the albums, but his quick and easy forgiveness of John, who also belittled his songwriting, refused to let George have more of his songs on the albums and who never thought of George as and equal to himself or Paul. Life's ironies. Whatever, we all got to enjoy George's kick ass All Things Must Pass album that was the perfect "up yours and in your face" payback answer to both McCartney and Lennon. Must have been sweet payback indeed for George, lol.
Water Falls Yes, I've noticed that too about him. He had a little brother kind of attitude, he seems that way about Bob Dylan too. I've noticed Pisces and Geminis not getting along at all in other places too ... dunno. I see a lack of much interaction between Paul and George in the old footage, even though they shared a mike.

Whether playing for one or 80,000, he still has that ability to make you feel like it's just for you. One of the greats.
What could you possibly say that hasn't already been said about Paul? (including what I just wrote). There aren't enough superlatives to describe his talent, charisma and honesty. If you grew up in the 60s/70s the songs of the Beatles and Paul are like the background music to a movie of our lives. We've all felt the emotions summoned up by their lyrics and haunting melodies. The isolation and loneliness of an 'Eleanor Rigby', the wonder of a 'Magical Mystery Tour', the pure joy of a 'Penny Lane', the rousing rhythm of a 'Lady Madonna', the reminisces of a 'Things we said today', the whimsical comedy of a 'Maxwells Silver Hammer', the pure love of a 'Here There and Everywhere' or an 'I Will'. What a great, great friend Paul has been to us, without ever meeting most of us. My dear friend, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your wonderful music and just being you.

I myself was born in the eighties and yet no music means more to me than theirs. Every album, every song, and phrase still sounds magical and revolutionary. I honestly believe that it always will.
Thanks for your kind comments. I was born in the 50s and I was 9 when the Beatles came to Sydney, Australia in 1964. I grew up with their music and particularly the Beatles cartoon show. My cousins and I used to pretend to be the beatles, playing badminton racquets and Milo tins out on the front lawn of my Grand Mother's place and miming to their records. In my teens I started playing guitar for real and I met some other guys at school. We were going to be another Beatles. We learned their songs and tried to mimick them. Over the years their music has always been in the background and sometimes I will drag out my album collection and have a Beatles day. I still play a few of their songs at open mic nights.
I was fortunate enough to be able to obtain Diamond seating tickets for Paul's concert in Sydney on December 12th, 2017. They were expensive but it's something I can tick off my bucket list. It will be so exciting. My girlfriend is a big Paul McCartney fan too, so she is over the moon.

Paul always my favorite, he had an incredible wife who was an incredible support for him, real Love. We have really never been without the Beatles, each a rich talented musician on their own. So we always heard them even if they weren't together, they still produced music. They didn't just have one sound they evolved and grew along with us, they and their producer when in the Beatles created sounds that weren't part of the musical plane at the time, creative and trail blazers.
Paul is my favourite too, that is why i know that "Sir Paul" is not him.

+Sveinn Sigurður Actually - it was Frank Sinatra's manager that started hiring young girls to scream when he sung in the 1940's. That is what started it all!!! Colonel Parker did it for Elvis - and I'd guess that started the fad - and the Beatles PROBABLY never paid to have ANY screaming fans! By then - they simply came when the group came and started screaming on their own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A fabulous interview! WOW! "Maybe I'm amazed at how I love" Paul! His calm presence of mind while looking at moments in his life over the many years just impresses me more than anything he can say. Yet everything he said seems so relaxed, honest & dignified. I never knew this about him.
William is good at doing his standard charade.
It's just extraordinary that these two men were living so close to each other. Legends in their own right, never mind together. INCREDIBLE talents. You get the feeling some external force that none of us will understand made the dream team of John and Paul happen, and the Beatles. It's just too much of a co--incidence.

Can anyone tell me what happened to Billie Shears? When I was a kid, there was a rumor, some say by the Beatles themselves, that Paul had died, and there were people in Britain who were saying Billie Shears took Paul's place after Paul died in a car crash. The Brits were also saying the "new Paul" (Billie) did not get along with John Lennon and that's why they broke up in 1970. Everyone listening to the Beatles after 1966 were saying they did not sound the same, nor could they write good songs any more. So, maybe the rumors (or publicity stunt) was true....?!!

I have been very fortunate. I have personally seen David Frost and Paul McCartney. I liked McCartney very much. He was not arrogant. He was very sociable. He spoke to his audience. He was in concert and told his fans how much he appreciated their ongoing support. He said he was told he had a lot of money, but never saw it. He played an honorary set which he dedicated to women of philanthropic accomplishment. His second wife sat in the audience. He did Beatles songs, Wings songs, and played a ukelelei given him by the late George Harrison, who had recently died, singing the song SOMETHING in his honor. He talked about his great affection for John Lennon, and how much he enjoyed Ringo. He was in great voice singing to a full house of young and old. It was utterly magical.
How can anybody not appreciate that they have lived in the world with a true musical genius ! Yes he is old now but still touring and filling stadiums throughout the world ! Lennon was very pessimistic about touring, having to meet people (ie,governors and their wives and family) he despised. Paul seems to have a more positive, optimistic memory. That really defines their difference
in other words, lennon was honest and paul's a politician...
Both are subjective views so saying one was honest and implying the other was not is e bias in itself.
No, Paul is more of a people person than John was. Everyone who met the Beatles would say that Paul was the friendliest and most outgoing one. After him, Ringo, then George, and John was the least sociable of the four. So, taking that into account explains perfectly why Paul experienced those things very differently. He loves meeting new people. How that makes him a politician is beyond me.
More like paul knew he had to play the game. And john would have more fun flipping the table.

The one comment from Paul concerning Ono was interesting. He said she
was famous for avant garde art and still is. I don't believe for one
second that Yoko was famous until she got John. She may have been known
in small circles in NYC, but she wasn't famous until John...

John met Yoko Ono at a gallery showing her work in the UK. Please...do a little elementary research before opening your mouth to comment on Ms. Ono's bonafides. She's an Artist. Always has been. And her actual stature is much higher than the kinds of Philistines who follow The Beatles will ever realize.
The Fluxus Exhibition in London in 1997, which was free I should say, was actually very good, a nice exploration of surreal things. There were also all the Hair Peace posters they made for the bed-in, in frames of course. Interesting to see them.

I wouldn't be the person I am today without having been introduced to the Beatles. Especially Paul. I've been a pianist for 24 years, and Paul certainly inspired me and instilled that passion for music that I have today. He is my absolute hero.

What a fantastic interview! I grew up during that time and it was great reminiscing those days and the great music of the Beatles. Paul has had an amazing career after the Beatles moved onto other things. It is certainly worth mentioning that the other three members of the Beatles were successful in their after Beatles career too. Ringo still tours with his All Star Band!

Always in my heart. Since 1964 as a 15 year old girl in New York I've loved The Beatles. I saw them 4 times in concert, and then saw Paul as a solo act twice. I never saw Wings in concert (sad). I'm 70 now, and still a huge fan! He's 77 now...still adorable. 💙

It seems that Paul is incredibly interested in these parts of videos, it almost looks like some of them he is watching for the first time.
I think you can tell he's more than willing to do a proper interview as he knows David Frost knows what he's talking about. It must be infuriating the number of times Paul comes across stupid parasites working for some dumb magazine or tabloid asking really puerile questions. Look up a video where some airhead news anchor asks him 'Was it Yoko's Fault?' and he responds 'No' in a bitter manner (as he should be).
And I think it helps that they're both English and of the same/similar age....

I love this interview, and have watched it many times over the years, and i now just realized that the last clip Frost shows his is of him interviewing Paul from 1964. I always used to think it was some random interviewer but now it makes so much more sense!
Paul from 1964 was another Paul McCartney then the one we have today.

Brilliant interview. What a shame that they broke up because thEy were all so close. They lived, partied, sang, and wrote music together. I’m sure they all felt a sense of loss after the breakup. I’ve learned more about the Beatles from watching this and other interviews, etc. Brilliant interview. 💕

OMG........Paul overrated? Where do I start?........just the number of songs he's written and have you ever really listened to him play bass? He is one of the best bass players to ever live.
Agreed. He also pretty much invented rock bass playing in the first place. He was certainly the first pop/rock bass player to really do anything creative with the bass, rather than just playing standard lines.
He is THE LEGEND not A LEGEND...
The Beatles were, by far, the most over-rated pop/rock band of the century. They only recorded a couple of TRULY great songs (one of them being a song by Harrison).
Their fame was due to two main factors: recording very catchy (but NOT, as mentioned, "great") songs and being extant in a decade when there was very little variety of styles in popular music.
Beatles not only recorded dozens of GREAT songs, they saved us from the sadness of a Presidential assassination. They changed culture and brought so much joy to a generation world wide.
Your reference to the Beatles Reverend is AFTER listening to them for 50 years. If you were there when they started, you would know they were and are the most influential and innovative group of the 20th Century and maybe ever (Sgt. Pepper comes to mind.) And off the top of my head....Yesterday, Cant Buy Me Love, I Saw Her Standing There, Long and Winding Road, Hey Jude, And I Love Her, Hard Days Night, Help, Strawberry Fields,Eleanor Rigby, A Day in the Life, Here Comes the Sun, Something, Let it Be, Get Back, While My Guitar Gently Weeps........to name a few! And OMG, take a look at the charts in the 60's, you'll see pop, rock, Motown, country songs, instrumentals, and even crooners like Sinatra and Martin.........

Secondly, you mentioned "dozens" of great songs (which, of course, is subjective opinion) which implies at least twenty four such "GREAT" songs. Of those you mentioned, only two or three (at most) are what could be classified as great. I am a university trained composer, guitarist, pianist and musicologist. What are your qualifications, Mr. Devil?
Finally, your talk of The Beatles being influential and innovative (which, of course, they were) is TOTALLY inconsequential to the point I was making.
