It's great to have choices. I think Canon, Nikon and Sony are all great brand choices nowadays for Mirrorless. Depends on the user which system they prefer.
Totally agree. If you can’t crush it with any of these cameras, your problem is technique. Image quality and AF will be great on all (though worst on Canon b/c of the lower megapixel count). Consumers will pick which ever feels best in hand, has the glass they want/need and that they can afford. If you are lucky enough to own any of these three cameras, you win. Personally, I’d go for the Sony b/c I’m a wimp and place a high priority on weight. I need to hit the gym or something. :)
I think definetly they are coming with a smaller z8. I see the same sensor and expeed with just smaller buffer and some cutdown feature like no prores or even 8k 60p. It will be the perfect competitor to the R5. My only problem is when. The other brands have nowadays more or less a coherent line and for us, its z9 and then the rest. Its like a big gap in between, you just look in envy to those that can warrant the cost and just sit, because there is no R5.
I've got the a1 and I love the fact it's not too big. I like to shoot birds and wildlife but also go hiking with it clipped to my shoulder strap, the other 2 are just too big despite all 3 being great cameras
@@danielvilliers612 Z8 might be very high megapixel rather than a baby Z9, if it even exists and it's not just the Z7iii that folks are waiting for. I've got the Z6 too, and investing in lenses, but i'd love to see what the mark iii generation brings.
@@sarfaraz.hosseini Why should the Z8 has to be higher megapixel. Until now the D3-D6 have been lower megapixel, The Nikon D2x was the flagship high megapixel during the days. So Nikon always change model specification . Everyone was astonished by the high megapixel d800 which was supposed to be the successor of the D700. The Z8 will have to be a very high seller for Nikon, so a very broad camera spec and not a niche one. So I don't expect a high megapixel camera at all. At least not above 45 megapixel.
Yeah that is important. Fod me im happy Canon have all the rf lenses i need and the ef to rf adapter works really good altoug i would prefer not to use one, nikons old lenses doesnt work that good on their new mirrorlwss camera .
How is the r3 the best with buffering? Has same fps and buffer as the a1 but at HALF the resolution. Any perceived loss due to the Sony compression is moot compared the loss of half the resolutions. Pretty dubious choice there guys
Because more images can fit in the same sized buffer? That effectively means that buffering is better. For Sony to have equivelent buffering they'd need to double the size and they didn't.
@@GrantMcWilliams this makes no sense. A1 and R3 reportedly can buffer the same number of images (150) yet sony has twice the resolution. Effectively the Canon has a buffer memory of half the size. How is that better?
I would take the Z9 hands down. Not just for the specs, Nikon Z Cameras are just so fun and nice to shoot with. It is hard to describe but I simply connect to Nikon cameras. The better screen, the menu, the shoulder display, the lcd display, all feels right.
That’s why I love my Nikon Z9 !! I have the Sony A1 as well but once you see Nikon colors straight out of the box with no tweaking you will understand what’s so special about Nikon.
@Siddharth Sriram Both Nikon and Sony lenses are very sharp. There is no question about that. I typically use Zeiss Otus or Milvus lenses for shooting video which has amazing rendition and contrast. For run and gun situations I use native Sony or Nikon lenses which work perfectly . However if you are in a more controlled and slow pace scenario , i will advise you to look into manual Zeiss lenses. They are amazing !
I'm so happy that I did not leave Nikon. I waited for this moment and picked up my Z9 last weekand. All I can say is WOW! I barely missed a shot while taking pictures of Eagles and they are soo sharp.
Always great and fun video from you all. For me, there is not much chance of switching systems. With an extensive investment in Nikon lenses, I am very happy to see the Z9 being so competitive with the other two brands. Will have to get my order in! 😀
Just looking at the scenario a few months ago when everyone was criticising Nikon for its autofocus. The Z9 winning the autofocus defeating the sony A1 is an unbelievable feat. Edit : I do agree we need more thorough reviews. But do rememeber that in no situation involving action was Nikon close to Sony or Canon before. Let's wait for Steve Perry and Mark Smith to release their reviews for the wildlife and maybe Jared Polin for Sports comparison
Please wake me up when sport professionals or birders make a decent back to back comparison in which the Z9 has faster or more accurate AF than the A1. I haven't seen that even being tested in this video.
@@mirrorlessny Tracking software maybe. But focus speed mostly comes from the scanning speed of the fast stacked sensors. And those are too expensive to manufacture to be put in "cheaper" bodies.
Well, they're pretty low res .jpg files. It's sort of a gimmick with only a few use cases - not something the average user would be considering as the main "burst rate".
@@oneeyedphotographer Yeah that's a possible use case. But I'm sure you agree that it's a bit limiting for most shooters. My first digital camera (Casio EX-F1) had a similar 60fps burst rate. Rarely got much use out of it.
The Nikon Z9 is a clear winner for me, everything I would dream to have in a camera, and ... it's a Nikon. I cannot imagine any scenario where, at this point in my life (73-year-old enthusiast), I would consider changing brands. Can't be sure which one, but there's a new Nikon camera somewhere in my future, as I move away from DSLRs. If finances permit, my next camera will be a Nikon Z9.
So glad Nikon have got back into the game, my first proper camera was a Nikon and stuck with them for years but had to jump ship to Sony due to video requirements, can see me jumping back again!
Same here. I loved the D300, liked the D810. Waited and waited for video autofocus and 4K 60 but it took way too long. By the time it came out they were still behind Sony and Canon. Unfortunately I’m not overly thrilled with the Sony A1 I switched to last Spring. All these people drooling over image quality makes me want to catch that drool with a paper towel and clean their eyeballs with it. The video is good though, as long as autofocus is working.
the r3 not only better but much better, 4K with downsapling as well at 60fps the a1 only downsaples in apsc, then the a1 has an indecent bitrate, the r3 has the internal raw and there are a thousand other things, the a1 is not bad for having 50mpx, however, the r3 is much better
@@lorenzopreiti barely anyone cares about raw and those who do use monitors. also nobody cares about 1880mbs bit rates that eat your cards like there's no tomorrow only to be later compressed it down to 40mbps and published on youtube. Slog 3 is superior to clog3. Crop mode gives two focal lengths with not a huge difference in quality. 8k for fun and crop is available. FHD at 240 fps. Smaller, lighter, proper HDMI port. More lenses to choose from. overall the a1 is more balanced and complete, the R3 might be more powerful in fringe situations. thats ignoring the photography aspect.
Is it me, or is Chris never shooting using the "DP Reviews Favourite" fully articulating screen? He always uses the OVF or EVF on cameras? Fully articulating for macro or birds makes finding a subject much harder, and slower to get the screen out initially.
He mentioned in another video that he does prefer to use the view finder if he can, "even on a tripod". I think the thing about the articulating screen is that maybe you don't use it a lot, but if you need it it's a lifesaver. My ancient camera only has an OVF, and if I can't get my face in the right spot then I just have to shoot blind and hope for the best.
One of the major shooting hobbits I changed is to shoot with live view screen instead of looking through the at little hole. Nikon Z9 is the best in my option, it is flexible in viewing angles and it doesn’t flip to the side, to me having the camera align with the subject is very important.
How times have changed! Nikon's flagship gets the nod for best video options of all 3, (plus best hybrid camera perhaps)! This is the comeback story of the year! We will see what Canon does next to catch up. The R3 is not the flagship for Canon, that is still to come according to Canon.
Not convinced by the burst rankings. What does the Sony and Nikon lose with compression? Some pixel data will be summed up, but the overall amount of data is probably still higher than the Canon. They should be compared at similar file sizes or resolutions.
Great video, that I watched in its entirety, despite the fact that I'll never own any of those cameras because of the extremely high prices... it must have been because of the three great hosts. Nice collaboration!
@@jimmyqballs Yeah if the A1 drops down momentarily to the max res of R3 and I don't notice that it dropped at all, How is that a win for the R3? *I have never had an R3 in my hands so I don't know what it is like.
I'm a Canon and Olympus shooter, but after viewing this, if I had to choose one of those three, I'd probably go with the Sony. Overall, I preferred what I was seeing with the Nikon, but they totally lost me at electronic shutter only. Too bad, really. As for Canon's controls, if I go by the EOS R, which I own, honestly, I generally prefer the control interface on my Olympus E-M1. Finally, the body is only part of the equation. From what I've seen, Canon and Nikon have pretty closed ecosystems when it comes to lenses for their new mounts. The availability of more reasonably priced third party lenses for the Sony mount makes that system so much more attractive to me. I kind of wish that I'd picked a different brand when I decided to add "full-frame" to my kit. As solid, and reliable as my Canon is, a couple of years in, I'm really not seeing enough advantages over my m43rds system to justify the investment, and there's no way I'm gonna pay for any more of that "L" glass. It's good, but waaay too much money. Please Sigma and Tamron, get some lenses out for RF and Z mounts.
@@strongereveryday2302 Yep, I have no doubt but as long as they are available, I'll probably want one on my camera. Unless, of course, the readout speed and readout method from the sensor becomes so good that there is absolutely no need for a mechanical shutter. We aren't quite there yet as far as I can see.
Fun video but I couldn't disagree more. e.g. a 24@30 camera shouldn't beat a 50@30 camera in framerate. That category was really a math problem - how much data is a camera pushing at any given point? And yes, the a1 evf degrades in AF-C.... to the resolution of the R3 evf, so that's not an advantage for the R3, obviously, considering the a1 is higher res in AF-S and playback, and the same in continuous. Just some bizarre choices. Personally, I think it's a tie between the z9 and a1, depending on which features you'd rather have. e.g. the 1/400-1/500 flash sync on the a1 (Which you didn't even mention.) vs. the ergonomics of the z9. I could go either way, *ignoring lens selection*, which then becomes a clear sony win. But the R3 winning this roundup is kinda nuts - I don't even put the R3 in the same category as these cameras. The R3 is in the a9 roundup with the 24mp sports cameras. e.g. R3/a9/D6/1DX
Your speed comparison didn’t make any sense. First you dismissed the 120fps of the Z9 because it is only @ 11mp, but then you said that mp don’t matter so Canon’s 24mp raw files were considered as equivalent to the z9’s 45mp files.
One thing you missed which is important to me is shooting in low light with high ISO what does the noise look like with all three cameras at the same settings.
I think what I'm afraid of for the R3 and the R1 when it's announced is that it will go back to the days of the EOS 1D and 1Ds when you had a speed camera and a resolution camera. Will the R1 be a best of all worlds or will it let the R3 focus on sports and action while the R1 is a 100mp resolution monster?
I shoot birds and I can tell you, next to no one has even mentioned the R3 for all these months. The main reason is it is way too low res for birding. If we are talking about Canon, the R5 is an excellent camera for the money. But, I am sure the R1 will be in a different league.
Too many misses from Sony A1. I used to own everything Sony but then realize they cut a lot of corners. I mean what good is 240hz EVF when it drops to what 60hz when you are actually shooting?? To me that's BS. And the BS 30fps raw advertisement when its only lossy raw. I had a Sony smartphone that was the first 4k screen smartphone. Guess what, it only does 4K when viewing pictures. The rest of the time it's 1080p and there is no option to change it.
@@mlai2546 What on earth are you shooting that lossy isn't good enough for bursts? The A1 has the fastest AF with the only high rez 30fps RAW. For birding (what I shoot) it is ahead of the other two. It may be matched when shooting cars, if that is your thing...
@@mlai2546 Sony philosophy that every camera should be small, is backfiring for them. I mean they could have done a little bit bigger without even being as big as the two others, so as to ensure proper cooling, result there flagship camera which should be flawless in the field overheats.
Why would you mention 14bit at 20, when all three cameras can do that (fact for the A1, reasonably sure for the R3)? Regarding the EVF brightness, I shoot mostly on sunny days (keeps the shutter speed fast and ISO low) and have never wanted the A1 finder to be any brighter. Maybe you don't know it's brightness can be configured?
@@daran0815 I shoot with both my eye open and it's amazing for that kind of shooting when it's bright out. I'm saying if Nikon wwntied to they could just drop it down to 12bit and they would get 30fps
I find your auto focus results a little strange. I’ve spent a lot of time with the Sony A1 and the canon R5 and I find that the auto focus tracking, at least on animals, is better on the our R5, so I assume the R3 is even better?
One area, which wasn't mentioned was lenses and really that is just if not more important than the cameras themselves. Really you need to do a video on the lens situation for the different systems, with the new lenses available as well as the older lenses that can fit each system.
@@OkwyUgonweze I don't think so. The new lenses are way better than the old ones, this is especially important for mirrorless cameras where the subject can be anywhere in the frame, even at the edges where the new lenses are way sharper than the old ones. So adapting old lenses is only a temporary thing people do. Looking at the current lineup of new native lenses Sony has the edge because 3rd party lense makers like Sigma and Tamron have been adding excellent lenses at very affordable prices.
@@OkwyUgonweze sony will be in the first place for mirrorless lenses, even if you add the A mount lenses vs the f mount and ef(they had more prime lenses at the extreme telephoto focal lenghts)
So travel did not count in this very much? I would think the much lighter a1 with the battery grip option is fantastic. Besides, where were the lens format and pricing comparisons (we do need lenses on the bodies) which is an essential part of pricing considerations. In the end really many people already made up their minds on which camera suits them, especially when already invested into mount systems via lenses.
So, I've shot with a Canon R5 and compared it to a Nikon Z7 both using the same Canon 100-400mm lens courtesy a Fringer EF-NZ adapter. I was shooting industrial photos of a 6 GHz microwave radio and its dish antenna mounted up on a tower but from the ground. I really loved the R5 body and its controls, extremely well though out. I also like the Canon lens, which autofocused as quickly on both cameras! What really surprised me was the resolution difference between both cameras. The Nikon raw had more detail than the Canon with the same crop. The Nikon Z7 jpg with in camera processing was far superior to the Canon R5. In fact, except for more post capability, for a well exposed shot, the fine jpg mode of the Nikon was very adequate. I was unable to process the Canon raw to achieve the same detail I got from the Nikon jpg. I was shocked! I believe the R5 does have an anti aliasing LP filter on its sensor while the Nikon doesn't. That might have made the difference. I was really ready to switch to Canon due to the quality of the EF line of glass and the camera's ergonomics. But meat and potatoes image quality kept me from making the switch. So, my next camera will be a Z9, and unless the Nikon 100-400mm S series lens, when it is available, is truly better than the Canon, I'll stick with being a Nikanon shooter, best of both worlds.
It's the Lowepro Flipside Sport 15L AW. The first bag where I have used every single feature as they described it in the marketing. It's my favorite bag. I got it 10 years ago in Singapore when travelling in SE Asia. I use it in cities and crowds and don't worry about pickpocketing because it only opens in the back. Other uses are horseback riding, hiking, carry-on bag, it fits in my pelican air so works while boating and guiding from shore to sea. They don't make it anymore and moved to more compartments, larger backpacks and side/back access with that series.
Damn, I love your videos guys :). Nice to see, that the sony is such a great camera, even if its nearly one year older than the other two. As a nikon z9 shooter, I am so happy every day, that this camera does such a great job, I love it. And as said by many other before: It is nice to see, that every large brand has a camera, you can do almost everything with it ;). But there is one thing I did not understand in your comparison. It is the burst rate: Why is Sony on second place with lossy compressed raw? The Z9 has such a great format with the 14bit high efficiency * format, I can't see the difference. And with that format, it can do a lot lot more shots in a row. ;)
Serious question: How does Sony's having a physical shutter mean that it has better image quality than the Nikon? I don't understand what advantage the mechanical shutter has there. Also, you didn't mention that Nikon is ISO64 native. What affect does that have on the comparison? Historically, it's always given Nikon an advantage.
ISO 64 is a definite advantage, but not having a shutter on your camera does add a slight tearing effect to LED screens that advertisers commonly use for indoor sporting events. Right now it is the bane of shooting without a shutter. Most find it annoying, but nothing to throw away a photo for.
Now that you've done the flagship comparison, what about a PT boat comparison? What camera in each brand would be the best entry point for a companion to these behemoths? Compare those guys?
Absolutely love this @Chris, @Evelyn & @Kyle. This was great fun watching … I barely paid attention to all the camera specs you guys were tossing at each other and was more interested in the way you made such a very nerdy thing like a mini-comic performance. This is how reviews should be !!
Although my baby the A1 only got 3rd place, it’s wonderful to see that all three companies have such strong showings in the market today. However I should point out that, in my opinion, Sony arguably has the best lens support out of the bunch. I get that this is a body comparison, but it’s such a crucial aspect of choosing a body that I think it deserves a mention.
They all have their lens line ups. Nikon has some excellent lens now that are decent price and great smaller size. Canon has amazing RF lenses which I’m in love with. No C/A, fringing, etc. Even the cheap 24-105 F4 is spectacular! Sony 24-105 F4 wasn’t anywhere near as superb as that. I was a Sony shooter recently too. They do have some affordable glass that’s great though. Tamron has some great ones too. A1 looks like an incredible camera! Sony has been killing of for years and they are the ones who started this whole mirrorless full frame fun!
It quite odd to think a sane person will splurge $6500 on a camera only to skimp on glass..when I see statements from fanboys like this it's obvious they ain't tried other systems. Canon && Nikon have a history of over 60 years of glass that will work on the mirrorless bodies ( sure some may not autofocus but you've got choices)..and these lenses have a character and not the clinical and digital look you get from recent lens (esp. Sony's glass)..
You do put EOS before R3, yet you keep mislabeling α1 as a1? (I see that the thumbnail has been corrected this time, but not the title, description or the video)
It looks like a flagship and is priced like a flagship. I almost get the feeling that Canon changed the name of it from R1 to R3 after Sony launched the A1.
@@oneeyedphotographer I just know the entire lead up to the R3 it was rumored as the R1 then it dropped as the R3 and people started talking about the R1 immediately like the R3 was some sort of prosumer camera…. But at $5,999 I’m not buying that it wasn’t aimed as a flagship.
Can someone with firmware 1.20 and an R3 do a photo burst test for me? I'd like to know what the bit-depth of the raw images are when shooting at 195fps? With the previous firmware the 30fps burst was 14-bit. Also the buffer was only able to handle 150 images. I wonder where the compromise is.
This is from your site. The a1 has an oversampled 4K mode of its own, coming from an APS-C crop of the image; however, it comes from 5.8K. So technically it is oversampled no?
amazing debate, i like it. The three cameras display their respective advantages. now it depends on us, which one do we prefer, everything is good, depends on our preferences
What's the story behind shooting this video on the Sony FX3? Are you switching from the GH5 or just trying something different? Great video by the way.
I needed something that could record 4 channels of audio internally. Sadly, we had interference issues with out rode Wireless Go kit, and had to use two channels a passing mics back and forth. Jordan @ DPRTV
I like all three, but size matters.....I want to get the Z9 but it is so big. That is my only issue with it. Great review. Wish Fuji's had a Xt5 that was 45mp....
@@mirrorlessny Funny, for me it’s the opposite; I have always slapped a battery grip on my previous DSLR bodies just to get that full body handling that I need out in the field. Although I have the option to take it off I actually never do that because the vertical grip is so important to me. I also do a lot of hiking with it, always keeping it in my hand. Not tucked down in my backpack. That’s what I love about the Z9 and R3. Personally, I would never go mirrorless for the miniature body sizes only. That’s not what mirrorless is about, for me.
@@freetibet1000 @mirrorlessNY I think you guys are hitting on the exact conclusion that the video is making - that uses can pick the system that fits for them without sacrificing anything. Want a small and compact body? Get the Sony. Want the full body handling you're used to with DSLRs? Pick Canon or Nikon. No matter what you choose you're getting the best the industry has to offer, and that's a great place to be from a customer standpoint.
I would like to see lowlight shooting, NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct on a Z9, a Gh5 II (2) and adapted glass, Canons best/fastest Options, and Sonys options. As I own and use a Gh5 and M.Xl X0,64 with some Sigma F1.8 glass and Canons F1.4's I know that it is not close to Native lenses, the extra 1 1/3 stop gained from an (xl) booster is something else, it adds something to pictures/videos that are "not math", it's more interesting with a booster. A test Pls?
In their review, DPReview spends a good amount of time talking about how great the z9 viewfinder is in spite of the specs and how in use it was as good or better than anything else. I guess they forgot about this…
Despite it not being as high resolution (even though it’s still way high resolution for such a small screen), the EVF is like three times brighter than any other EVF you can get. This will make it way nicer to use rather than a dimmer higher res screen.
Don't misunderstand me - I enjoy and subscribe to this channel, however, this is one video I will NOT be watching!! Why? Well, for me these interbrand comparison reviews are, for 95% of photographers, irrelevant! Well, that's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it. The vast majority of photographers cannot afford or justify brand switching. If we are serious, we already have a significant investment in our chosen brand - which ever it might be. And, let's be honest, they are all great cameras and so long as the photographer is competent and takes the trouble to learn how to use them, they will all give stunning results. I am certain that each unit will outscore the other two in one aspect or another. To me it is far more important to get good information on how to get the best from one's chosen brand / model not to be made to feel either smug because you chose the one that outscored the other two, or dissatisfied because your chosen one was beaten by the other two. And, let's face it, we know each manufacturer will continue to fine tune the performance, reliability, functionality etc. through firmware updates so they will continually leapfrog each other as time goes on. Rant over.
There are also new photographers that watch these kind of videos to figure out which brand to choose. They might not buy a flagship body as their first but if that's what they're aiming for in the future, choosing a brand based on the differences in those cameras can be a good move. That way they can start building a collection of lenses and then later buy a flagship used or new if they can afford it then. There are also the people that are transitioning to mirrorless cameras and that's a good time for changing brands if they feel like trying something different.
Canon and Sony ruling over just because of auto focus and filmmaking capabilities. Nikon just got ahead in game with same autofocus and video capabilities. Damn! And another good sign for Nikon is they no need to cripple cameras because they don’t have any cinema line to ‘protect’.
OMG....that puppy stole the whole video! Do NOT put an insanely cute puppy in any video if you want people's attention for yourself. Sorry....a puppy like that will upstage whatever you are doing every time.
Wow....the Nikon Z9 comes on top...great going Nikon. The only gap is Z mount lenses....but the AF adapter is awesome and not really feeling like the Nikon lacks lenses. VR is quite capable....per my usage, I think the Nikon is the best value camera.
Nice video, some digs at each other. Now as I don't have one of those or the brands... from a pure package point I would chose Nikon Z9, not just for camera but also roadmap. However, being an Olympus user... why was there an Olympus shown very very briefly? Is this a hind at the wow aka OM1? Its just so suspicious, you might wonder....
As a Sony shooter since the Mavica days, it is always great how Sony sets the bar and C/N follow along 1#2 years later. So the A1 is a fantastic camera ending in 3rd place, but you didn’t reveal each camera’s release date! If all three came out on the same day, I’d consider jumping ship, but we know the A1 has been here coming on 2 years while the C/N models came out a year or more later…enough said. @Hates Spam your kidding right? The R5 is a sports wildlife dream come true. Up until the Sony A1 came along the R5 was the best bird and wildlife mirrorless camera to date. Also cropping ability in post is a huge deal to many birds and wildlife shooters out there. The R5 had 20 fps electronic shutter just like the Sony A9II and more mega pixel. The bird eye detect autofocus was ground breaking and still is just as competitive as the A1. Just as a “suggestion” you might want take a relook at that camera. It’s won photogs over across the world
@Hates Spam well (lol) I’m using the Nikon Z6II and the Nikon D500 (dslr). However I’m interested in the Zed 9 but don’t like the pro body form factor. I want a small body like the A1. But I’m invested in lenses and not rich. So I’m considering switching to canon R5 actually.
@Hates Spam well I do a lot of street photography and wildlife, birds, birds in flight, general wildlife / squirrels, dogs etc. I also love landscape. My Z6II is a great all around camera however it doesn’t cut it for fast moving animals or people . Especially birds. I think to take my bird photography to the next level (besides great lenses) I need a camera that can shoot fast and track fast moving subject. My D500 does a decent job at fast moving but not amazing. Also I seen lots of stuff online of birds shot on a 600mm f4 lens then cropped in post that look much better than mine. I know that A7rIv is really good for that
At this point for bif shooters like me Canon and Nikon don't have a lens to compare with the Sony 200-600 . I owned the Sony 600mm F4 for a while but it's too bulky for me. I have shot with the Canon RF 100-500 on the R5 and R6 . Nowhere near as sharp as the Sony 2-6 with less reach and slower aperture . I shoot from ground level with the Sony A1 using the rear screen and it is not an issue. You can never confirm sharpness with any rear screen
It's true that especially Nikon's tele offering still lags behind. You got the 70-200/2.8 which you can use with a TC, the 100-400/4.5-5.6, and the 400/2.8 with the built-in TC. All are great options, but still not as complete an offering as the other two. And arguably more targeted towards the high-end. The 200-600 is on the roadmap, but I think they also should release something like a 70-300.

How is the r3 the best with buffering? Has same fps and buffer as the a1 but at HALF the resolution. Any perceived loss due to the Sony compression is moot compared the loss of half the resolutions. Pretty dubious choice there guys
Probably payed shilling

Unbelievable is a perfect choice of words for this one...lol
Please wake me up when sport professionals or birders make a decent back to back comparison in which the Z9 has faster or more accurate AF than the A1. I haven't seen that even being tested in this video.

Looks like Nikon Z9 has better build quality as usual with nikon cameras that's why i love Nikon. D700,D3 nothing to compare with.
Is there a full production review for the Z9?
I absolutely love watching you guys. Thanks for a great side by side comparison.
Hard to go wrong with any of these cameras
ive used sony for 14 years and have no thoughts in moving to canon or nikon so for me the A1 is insane and perfect for my uses
r3 is better for video than A1? I call bullshit on that. crop mode alone should tip the scale.
The A1 also gains a lot of video ground if you're willing to pair it with an Atomos Ninja.
the r3 not only better but much better, 4K with downsapling as well at 60fps the a1 only downsaples in apsc, then the a1 has an indecent bitrate, the r3 has the internal raw and there are a thousand other things, the a1 is not bad for having 50mpx, however, the r3 is much better
The r3 is much better for video what are you smoking
@@lorenzopreiti barely anyone cares about raw and those who do use monitors. also nobody cares about 1880mbs bit rates that eat your cards like there's no tomorrow only to be later compressed it down to 40mbps and published on youtube. More lenses to choose from. overall the a1 is more balanced and complete, the R3 might be more powerful in fringe situations. thats ignoring the photography aspect.
I would like to handle heavy one big body cameras because I used to Nikon f5 and very similar kind of design Z9?
@@aku343 The back screen makes it harder to hold the camera steady, and doesn't work well in strong light.
One of the major shooting hobbits I changed is to shoot with live view screen instead of looking through the at little hole. Nikon Z9 is the best in my option, it is flexible in viewing angles and it doesn’t flip to the side, to me having the camera align with the subject is very important.
OMG that puppy. Showstopper and winner of this video. If I had to choose I'd go with the Z9. Price, af, video, winner winner camera.
Hi, if you had to review these 3 flagship cameras today, how would the ratings be different?
Probably the best review of the top 3 cameras out there. Exactly as it should be, clear fun with no bashing of either brands :-)
The Z9 viewfinder is way brighter than the others. It's great in low light.
So is there a significant edge to the Canon for low light performance? I didn't hear that mentioned.
Great point. Same here (can't afford them). It's nice though that this technology will eventually trickle down to the less expensive models.

Pretty soon there will be no such thing as mechanical shutter.
I am so happy about how Nikon catched up so well with Nikon Z9
Well i tried all three and they are really close
Yes, exactly.
To have a 24MP camera in a flagship camera comparison in 2022 is already a bit of a joke but to make it win “tie” is non-sense really.
A1 doesn't have oversampled 4k?omg, didn't know that at all
Your speed comparison didn’t make any sense. First you dismissed the 120fps of the Z9 because it is only @ 11mp, but then you said that mp don’t matter so Canon’s 24mp raw files were considered as equivalent to the z9’s 45mp files.

Out of the the R3 is the only one I would not even consider. It is not a bad camera but the R5 is very close and has more resolution.
I shoot birds and I can tell you, next to no one has even mentioned the R3 for all these months. The main reason is it is way too low res for birding. If we are talking about Canon, the R5 is an excellent camera for the money. But, I am sure the R1 will be in a different league.
R3 is a let down any one who says otherwise is just a canon fanboy

Too many misses from Sony A1. I used to own everything Sony but then realize they cut a lot of corners. I mean what good is 240hz EVF when it drops to what 60hz when you are actually shooting?? To me that's BS. And the BS 30fps raw advertisement when its only lossy raw. I had a Sony smartphone that was the first 4k screen smartphone. Guess what, it only does 4K when viewing pictures. Not downsampling is how they managed to keep the camera from overheating.

Why would you mention 14bit at 20, when all three cameras can do that (fact for the A1, reasonably sure for the R3)? One area, which wasn't mentioned was lenses and really that is just if not more important than the cameras themselves. Really you need to do a video on the lens situation for the different systems, with the new lenses available as well as the older lenses that can fit each system.

Other uses are horseback riding, hiking, carry-on bag, it fits in my pelican air so works while boating and guiding from shore to sea.
They don't make it anymore and moved to more compartments, larger backpacks and side/back access with that series.

And with that format, it can do a lot lot more shots in a row. ;)
Sony's perfected the art of blowing smoke..... 30/20fps in raw but at what quality ? You're absolutely right about this observation

A Canon shooter still has the range of EF lenses to draw on. I'd not switch brand unless I was confident my existing lenses will work wll enough.
I guess they forgot about this…
The person that was giving her perspective on the Z9 was from the camera store as a guest and not from DPReview.
Despite it not being as high resolution (even though it’s still way high resolution for such a small screen), the EVF is like three times brighter than any other EVF you can get. This will make it way nicer to use rather than a dimmer higher res screen.
16:05 - I still feel like the R3 should have been priced between $4,999-$5,499. I'm wondering how much the R1 will go for given the price category.
Awesome video! Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Canon and Sony ruling over just because of auto focus and filmmaking capabilities. Nikon just got ahead in game with same autofocus and video capabilities. Damn! And another good sign for Nikon is they no need to cripple cameras because they don’t have any cinema line to ‘protect’.
Indeed
Nice Review, How about Buffer on these camera?
OMG....that puppy stole the whole video! Do NOT put an insanely cute puppy in any video if you want people's attention for yourself. Sorry....a puppy like that will upstage whatever you are doing every time.
So many of my favourite camera reviewer personalities all in one video! I have no budget for any of these, but I will watch just to see all of you :)
Wow....the Nikon Z9 comes on top...great going Nikon. The only gap is Z mount lenses....but the AF adapter is awesome and not really feeling like the Nikon lacks lenses. VR is quite capable....per my usage, I think the Nikon is the best value camera.
It seems you can adapt E mount lenses to the Z mount ;)
Also the best experience camera! ❤🙌
Thats the same thougts that i had with the Olympus
As a Sony shooter since the Mavica days, it is always great how Sony sets the bar and C/N follow along 1#2 years later. So the A1 is a fantastic camera ending in 3rd place, but you didn’t reveal each camera’s release date! If all three came out on the same day, I’d consider jumping ship, but we know the A1 has been here coming on 2 years while the C/N models came out a year or more later…enough said. (Wait for the A1 MII !)
Great to see everyone having lots of fun and just showing off the quirks and strengths of each camera. Each on great and will fit into any ones tool belt quite nicely!
Resolution does not equal image quality
Oh my gosh, you're a genius or something?
Indeed image quality is all about sharpness because of the lens and dynamic range
@@percy66 I’m just not crazy about how they ranked the image quality section of the review. I would have liked to see a more qualitative comparison.
How I wished the Leica SL2, and one of those Fujifilm GFX in the same price range were included in this shootout.
They are not even in the same speed league.
@@ryanb8736 speed is not all that makes a good camera
@@felixchong2002 This is a speed and precision test of sports cameras. How does the Leica and GFX compare? I know they are both excellent cameras, but they don’t compare in this test. Now if they were to do an image quality test, then they would compete.
Hate to say it but the R5 should have been in this mix. You guys!
It’s won photogs over across the world
@Hates Spam all good brotha! Take care. By the way what do you shoot?
@Hates Spam well (lol) I’m using the Nikon Z6II and the Nikon D500 (dslr). However I’m interested in the Zed 9 but don’t like the pro body form factor. I want a small body like the A1. But I’m invested in lenses and not rich. So I’m considering switching to canon R5 actually.
@Hates Spam sounds like you got a great setup! I be heard great things from both of those cameras. So you use a canon to Sony adapter?????
@Hates Spam well I do a lot of street photography and wildlife, birds, birds in flight, general wildlife / squirrels, dogs etc. I also love landscape. My Z6II is a great all around camera however it doesn’t cut it for fast moving animals or people . Especially birds. I think to take my bird photography to the next level (besides great lenses) I need a camera that can shoot fast and track fast moving subject. My D500 does a decent job at fast moving but not amazing. Also I seen lots of stuff online of birds shot on a 600mm f4 lens then cropped in post that look much better than mine. I know that A7rIv is really good for that
Why did you not use the R5 from Canon?
At this point for bif shooters like me Canon and Nikon don't have a lens to compare with the Sony 200-600 . I owned the Sony 600mm F4 for a while but it's too bulky for me. I have shot with the Canon RF 100-500 on the R5 and R6 . Nowhere near as sharp as the Sony 2-6 with less reach and slower aperture . I shoot from ground level with the Sony A1 using the rear screen and it is not an issue. You can never confirm sharpness with any rear screen
Ever heard of Nikon 500mm 5.6 PF?
It's an excellent performer on the Z9.
@@OkwyUgonweze Of course I have. It's an adapted lens and doesn't zoom. I have shot with it too. Double the price with no weight advantage on the Z9.
@@starbase218 For what I shoot 300mm is too short
@@stevep927 I only mentioned it as part of my comment on the broader tele offering, in which I did mention the 200-600 as well.
Is Canon R5 not their flagship camera that should be used for comparison?
