Today I want to cover three common mistakes people make on the keto diet.
Common mistakes on keto and what to do:
1. Consuming too much fat
Eating more fat doesn’t get you deeper into ketosis-lowering your carbs does.
• Don’t consume extra fat unless you’re new to keto and need help fasting longer.
• Eat the fat that normally comes with the protein you eat.
2. Consuming keto snacks
Insulin is not just increased by carbs. It’s increased by eating.
• Avoid snacks, even keto snacks.
3. Consuming hidden carbs
Be sure to look for hidden carbs, especially maltodextrin, in your food and supplements. Fruit and berries contain fructose and glucose, which can also cause problems.
• Check your food labels
• Avoid fruit
• Avoid agave nectar
• Read the book “Don’t Eat for Winter.”
4. Not consuming enough quality protein
Not consuming enough protein tells the brain that you need to keep eating. Also, if you’re deficient in amino acids before going into a prolonged fast, you’re not going to feel very good.
• Consume a moderate amount of quality bioavailable protein
• Take a blend of complete amino acids (if you don’t feel good while fasting)

Thanks for watching! Avoid these common keto mistakes to boost your success. I’ll see you in the next video.
For five months I've eased into Keto. I do OMAD, 17gs of Carbs max daily... I also walk 20,000 + a day, and ACV in my mineral water... I eat 4 eggs daily, smoked salmon, chicken, brocoli, vit D12, Grana Padano, Cottage Cheese... In 5 months I have lost 96 pounds...(down from 360), I have weaned off my anti depressants (been reliant on them for 20 years), my stress and anxiety have almost gone. I sleep 8 hours soundly. I have never felt better. I regularly hike 25 miles plus... I am 43 going on 25... Keto and Exercise and Mindful Fasting... the discipline happens naturally once yo start seeing the benefits.
** Edit... 9 months in now. 170 lbs down ** Still feeling great... still walking loads. Still loads of energy.
P.S Thankyou for your guidance Dr. Berg. You're a pretty useful guiding hand through this process.
You rock star ... and inspiration!
@haroldpinteresque4460 bless ya sir. Thank-you.

I’m 1 week shy of 1 year of no carbs and no sugar. I did introduce blackberries], blueberries, and strawberries over the last three months after my A1C was at 5.1 and I’m still losing weight. You know your body, just listen to it.
Very good. Keep it up!
@@Drberg hello Dr Berg, I am curious to know if non-gmo resistant dextrin is considered high on the glycemic index. I’ve seen your Maltodextrin videos but not sure if this has the same effect, Hopefully you’ll answer this question, and/or possibly do a video. Thanks!
I lost 150lbs on Dr. Berg’s Healthy Keto. I’m 62 years of age. I went from 321lbs to 170lbs. I do not eat huge amounts of fat. I also have not eaten any fruit in 5 years since I went Keto, and I don’t miss it. One of the reasons I went Keto was because I was first diagnosed with a Severe Fatty Liver. It was because I was consuming so much Fructose in the form of fruit, & fruit juices. I would have an Orange, a Banana, Orange Juice every day. I cut that out immediately. I don’t even eat berries. Also - I stay away from any pre-packaged processed foods from the supermarket that say Keto on them. They’re junk. I will occasionally - maybe twice a month - make homemade ice cream at home with heavy cream, kefir, Allulose, vanilla extract, & egg protein powder in it. But, that’s a treat. And occasionally I’ll have Monkfruit sweetened dark chocolate. Just a couple of pieces - not the whole bar. After you’ve been on Keto for awhile your urges for sweet stuff goes away. It takes awhile though.
@@bones642 OMG today I had a couple of grapes and I said out loud this tastes like candy 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@lisah5784 I believe grapes in moderation are very nutritious. Maybe not if you are on a keto diet but they are certainly not the no no many people on youtube espouse.
Well done, thank you for sharing. Great doggie. 👍
What a beautiful and inspiring story, thanks for sharing 🙏
This is fantastic!
I do wonder ..after the weight loss, why avoid fruits such as berries? Is anyone missing the nutrients they provide?
I’ve noticed that my palate has matured since cutting out sugar. My cravings for sweet foods has lessened substantially. So I don’t want to reawaken my cravings by eating a bunch of snacks made with artificial sweeteners. You’ve made me much more aware of the junk I was pouring into my body. I feel so much better and am losing weight 🎉
i get the food for my low-carb diet from natural sources like green cabbage, chicken, eggs, carrots and no processed snacks
I loved keto, I attempt low carb and do only one meal a day, but I'll tell you right now, stress hits like a truck every now and then and makes my sugar addiction rear its ugly head. Aside from that, I swear keto is the best thing that ever happened to my family. Helped about 7 of us regain some semblance of healthiness over the last 5 years.
That's amazing. I'm happy for your family. Wishing you all good health!
One meal a day is probably not enough.
Dr Berg, I'm concerned that Intermittent Fasting might cause muscle wasting.
@sebastiank7287 when one becomes fat adapted, the one meal is absolutely fine. Sometimes, people are so non hungry, they even have to force the one meal if not prolonged fasting!
@@sebk174 One meal a day is perfect
I was kicked off a Keto/Atkins group because all they did was share snack recipes. I made a comment and likened it to Cocaine addicts in a crack lab looking for an alternative. The idea is to get away from the bad foods not find fake alternatives.
I'm 6'1 and have been at or around 152 lbs for the last two years with the following keto diet: Lunch: 3 eggs; 1 avocado; .35 lbs cheese; handful of pecans, walnuts, macadamia nuts; teaspoon of olive oil. Dinner: Steamed broccoli and chicken; 2 eggs; .5 lbs cheese; handful of pecans, walnuts, macadamia nuts; teaspoon of olive oil. No breakfast or snacks. I used to be vegan and weighed just 136. I went on keto to gain - healthily. Put on 16 lbs in about 6 mos and have maintained.
I found the easiest way to switch to KETO is to start having MCT oil, it creates ketones and makes it easier to switch as you are not that hungry while your body is getting used to low carb.
From personal experience I have never gained any fat from eating animal fats no matter the amount, as long as I have avoided carbs completely. It's literally impossible for me to eat any amount of butter and gain fat from it, I have seen some people do an experiment where they have only eaten meat and butter in high amounts (3000 calories) and still lost body fat or maintained it without gaining any fat, those people had a healthy body fat percentage (12-15%) so maybe their livers where better at handling it.
However I do agree that certain things in regards to fat consumption can maybe cause weight gain:
1. Eating plant fats
2. Eating too frequently triggering insulin
While it wasn't Dr Berg's intention some people might now be more afraid of eating things like butter which shouldn't be of concern. My advice is eat the amount of fat you want until you are satisfied, eat only once or twice a day.
Don't eat twice a day
Everything in moderation and exercise that's the whole story been doing this since I was 11 years old. Now 62
Yes ,the best diet ever. Never failed me , I’m 74 years old , no health issues whatsoever.
Thank you Dr.BERG

Simple, excellent Keto review. Well done. I can personally attest to this Keto “truth.” Long story, but simplified: went on Keto (3+ years now). Lost tons of weight. Transformed my eating to healthy Keto. BUT later in the program I started drinking tons of coffee (I’m an addict), perhaps 10+ cups a day, using 35% cream in each cup (just a “dollop” in each cup), thinking “it’s fat! No carbs! No sugars!” Couldn’t figure out why for months and months, having lost 30+ pounds initially, began plateauing heavier at about 15+ pounds under my initial weight. Very frustrating. It turns out, as Dr Berg explains, basically, each cup of coffee and 35% cream essentially became dessert bombs. When I figured this out (I’m not too bright), I stopped using cream altogether - straight awesome black coffee now - and immediately dropped to the lowest, healthiest weight I’ve ever been! So awesome. I like what you said (in my words): keto isn’t so much about increased fat, as it is about eating decreased, near zero carbs. Thanks Dr B.
What if I’m doing I cup almond milk for my morning coffee? Will that affect me
Are you eating OMAD or more often? Eating window? Regular exercise?
@@angelmaverick5701why do you have morning coffee at all?
*It's easy to overlook these things, but they can have a big impact on your results. This video is a great reminder for everyone on a keto journey.*
Thank you so much! I believe this is my extract problem.
You're very welcome!
I have been on Keto three years. A1C down 12 point to 5.1. Lost 65lbs. I did it while eating Keto bread from Aldi and 1 keto snack at night. I am still a little hungry after each of my three meals, hence the reward at the end of the day, a keto bar or keto ice cream. I will” never want to eat less than three meals. I am hungry enough now. And what do you recommend for a snack? I am not a cow to be eating a bowl of greens. At least recommend real food as a snack. I stop eating st 6:30pm. My first meal of the day is between 11:00am-1:00pm. I will never ever want to go days oppress even one day without eating.
Thank you so much Doctor Berg for wonderful advice and very helpful information. ❤Have a good day
Trying my best to avoid sugar and get more exercise.
Thank you for the advice on leg cramps and sciatica I will try some magnesium and also vitamin b supplements .❤
Dr Berg, firtly your videos are fantastic. Good job ! So, to my point, anyone out there have experience of doing keto/fasting when doing lots of training/exercise. I am competing in a number of cycling races and train for around 2-3 hours each day ( lunctime). If on a fasting day I will not eat until dinner time and the afternoon is often a struggle. I have also been doing keto/fasting for a good few months now and fee that I am adapted to this, plus eat very healithily ( no snacks, no carbs, no suger for ecample ).....all tips/experience welcome !
Waiting for your updated input on the carnivore diet, I'm on a strict carnivore diet version (the lion diet) and it has been working really well for my skin, and i don't feel period cramps and of course i lost a lot of weight. @@irinaeva23 Me to. I mistakenly overate at meal time. I've been doing this for about a month, and now I make sure not to do that. I do like Dr. Berg says, and I'll have a few macadamia nuts or pecans , if an appropriately sized meal doesn't feel filling enough. It helps a lot! Adding a little more fat.

Hope this helps someone. On my Keto journey I also had to study what foods made my gut feel horrible and I found that out using VIOME. I am very sensitive to eggs and soy and my diet mostly consists of green foods and bacon. My body loves organic grass fed meat and when I try other than that I feel sick. My doctors do not like me doing this diet but I think it is mostly that I am spending way less with them and using way less medicine. I do cheat occasionally and I pay the price but it can be very difficult at times to eat clean when out and about. I look like an athlete and I am a widow maker heart attack survivor.

Just filling yourself with tons of fat solves nothing. Its all about balance. About healthy vs bad fats. Healthy vs bad proteins. Good fats, good proteins, complex carbs, all in proper balance is key. Healthy eating is about good foods combined with knowledge. Just keep in mind that the word Keto is not only a way of eating but is now a marketing buz word. Not all labeled Keto is actually Keto, or if it "technically" is Keto, it may not be HEALTHY KETO.
GREAT info Dr. Berg!!
Agree, "moderation" is my way of trying to eat healthy
Healthy fats are animal fats. Complex carbs are just less poisonous. You talking like its the 80s. You going to pull out the food pyramid next?
@@Beef_it_to_be_fit Yes, healthy fats are animal fats. Complex carbs (non-soluble, fiber) are going to be in the Cruciferous vegetables Dr. Berg always recommends. Quality Proteins, also animal based, not plant based. As far as the food pyramid (not the new one), if it is flipped upside down (which then looks like a Keto/Carnivore diet), yeah I'll pull it out. As long as it gets the point across of proper balance, like 75/20/5 fat/protein/carb ratio. There are SOME good things in SOME vegetables, and a couple good things in a couple fruits. Balance (as long as that excludes sugar and starch, especially refined ones).
@@BigCarmine Complex carbs includes ones that are ultimately broken down into sugar, not just healthy fiber. Might wat to discriminate those before telling people to eat whole grains. The most common foods associated with complex carbs are the following (All of which are bad for you)
Starch, Quinoa, Whole grain, Oats, Sweet potato, Beans, Potatoes
@@Beef_it_to_be_fit I never recommend or suggest anyone eat grains. I personally avoid them like the plague. Nor do I ever suggest eating large amounts of veggies, only small amounts and only certain ones for the phytonutrients. As far a fruits, outside of a couple types of berries on occasion in small quantity, I avoid them as well and never suggest to anyone to eat more than a few and not on a regular basis.
I love this man so much
Thank you very much. Hope you are learning a lot here.

Thank you Dr Berg this is enlightening but I eat the fat of grassfed beef and sometimes I use butter to cook just so I can have more fats. I think I will just use home made coconut oil. Thank you again Dr Berg. God bless you, your family and tear
Thank you for waking these people up to the dangers of Keto; Keto is the best way to diet in my opinion with a higher protein split for me; I keep my carbs around 35-70g a day.
Eat one meal a day; eat six days a week; one day don't eat at all so you get a 40-48 hour fast weekly, youre welcome.
Excellent advice but people fighting serious disease may have to drop carb levels lower!
@@ianstuart5660 good point; I’m as active as you can be and healthy
@@PraiseJesusChristOurSavior That's terrific. In your type of situation, that level of carbs is probably helpful as opposed to harmful!
When I started keto, I did essentially ignore fat. I didn’t add fat, except for a teaspoon of MCT oil in my coffee to help with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins that I took as a supplement. I figured I’d been getting more fat than I needed anyway, so….
I did look up and then calculated how much protein I needed to build muscle, which at 75, is fairly low. Then I cut out everything with added sugar, potatoes and rice. (I missed the potatoes most .😊) As I was logging my food, I observed where I might be deficient and where there was abundance. All said, I no longer reduce carbs to the very low levels that keto promotes, but is definitely still low carb. I am still working on lowering fat so that my body will use my stored fat for making ketones (I still have about 15 lbs. of excess fat according to my DXA scan.) I do have trouble getting enough protein since I am am still trying to build muscle. Still, things seem to be going well. I don’t snack, avoid all highly processed foods - I do cook and bake - eat whole foods. I think I finally found a way of eating that is not boring but enjoyable.
Thanks for all your tips and information. It has been most helpful in keeping me focused, which can sometimes be difficult. There are quite a few aspects of diet and health that need to be coordinated to be successful.
Dr Berg Thank YOU for saving my life! I have lost 86 pounds in 10 months and my whole life is different! I no longer have to take blood pressure meds or use my CPAP at night! Hey Eric may God bless u...can u recommend me diet as I am suffering from chronic duodenites..
I've been doing healthy keto for 95 days. Went from 158 to 145 (am 5'10" tall). Though I'm 65 years old, I like seeing my tall, lanky body again. However, I can't say I feel very good. I'm tired many days of the week and can't seem to acquire the energy I thought keto would give me. I haven't had any covid jabs so I can't say it's due to that. I have found that when I eat a small, fuji apple I begin to feel much better and can get more chores done around the house. Maybe I just need to go on a regular low calorie diet and stop keto??? Btw, I really get a lot out of your videos. Thank-you very much
Stick to keto. Nothing wrong with adding in a bit of fruit if it makes you feel better, IMO. THE key word though is a BIT!
Dr Paul Saladino
Please create a video about the pros and cons of 24 hours fasting once a week vs 8/16 fasting every day. I can do both and would like to understand the health impacts of both methods. Thank you!
@HeleneKetoWorks could you please send me a link? I would be very thankful :)
Hi Dr. Berg, what do you think about the new rage among people taking Ozempic. How does that affect insulin and what does it do for overweight people. Especially people with Diabetes. People that do not have diabetes are taking it for weight loss. Could you please do a video on the Ozempic weight-loss drug?
I struggled at the beginning, trying to replace my favorite foods with "keto" versions. If you scroll through most of the Facebook "keto" groups where they share recipes, it's mostly desserts. Cheesecake, cake, cookies, ice cream, etc. Indulging in this stuff will not help you make the transition.
I kept it simple and that's why it worked so good for me. I fasted everyday. My stomach felt like a deflated ball in the morning. I eat when I woke up and felt great all day. Some days I lost a pound a day. I walked about 5 miles a day. No the walking never helped me lose any weight before starting diet and sometimes I gained weight before even walking that much but when I started dieting I started losing alit of weight. 124lbs of it
The importance of POTASSIUM!!!
Great info! How do you know when to stop eating extra fat? How do you know when your body’s ready?
Hello. Please see my video here about that: th-cam.com/video/xC1ojK3-GZM/w-d-xo.html
I remember about a couple months into Keto, I was pretty diligent about making a lean meat and vegetables almost every night for dinner. I started adding goat cheese and a whole jar of sun-dried tomatoes to the top of my steaks as a tasty "keto" treat. I would go for a run the next morning and I would have an insane pace, truly thinking that I was fully adapted to the keto-exercise. Little did I know, that whole jar of tomatoes packed in olive oil was no better than eating a large fry from a fast food restaurant, and I was constantly knocking myself out of ketosis from all the carbs in the tomatoes. The last point Dr. Eric makes is probably one of the most important ones, even if you think you're doing it right!
Wow! I don't know why I've been holding out but I better take a closer look at the keto diet.
Great. Check out my keto beginner videos here: www.youtube.com/@DrEricBergDC/search?query=keto%20beginner
Combined with Dr Berg’s intermittent fasting plan you will realize your goals. After 50 weeks I’ve been able to experience multiple benefits. My primary care physician is amazed and ordering regular tests to monitor the numbers. Maintain daily carb intake of about
I learned early on to read the labels!! I've " organic sugar" ," organic rice syrup " " Maltodextrin"...really? For keto? These companies plan on people not doing their research and just want to capitalize on the " trend" . Though it's not a trend for those of us who are serious.
I only made it two days out of my seven day attempt at a water fast, haha. I love yoir products though. I used ginger and turmeric tea, electrolyte powder, wheatgrass powder, cod liver oil, and nutritional yeast tablets. All are great and I didn't really suffer too bad of hunger pains. My issues were related to getting sick the day before I started fasting. Still, I had a really good cleanse and and lost a bit of weight too. I will still be doing my 24 hour weekly fast regardless and am changing my lifestyle with food. No more junk! More veggies and lean meats.
Healthy fats in your meat is fine. See videos by Dr Berg and Dr Ken Berry and Dr Sten Ekberg about how you can eat bacon every day. I do, and I am sated, healthy and thin.
@@verseau8360 I have always thought highly processed meats caused cancer? Is this something you have looked into?

Very informative, what about the new Gatorlyte 0 - made by Gatorade but has more electrolytes and 0 sugar?
Combining the keto diet with long walks yields great results. People often underestimate the calorie content of fat, making it essential to burn additional calories. Walking is an excellent choice as it doesn't rely on carbohydrates for efficiency.
I have always done way better on the Dukan diet. Generally felt much better and lost an average of 4 pounds a week. And I could adjust it for my job which is basically doing 7 straight hours of isometric exercise 3 days a week. Those days I found if I did not get some carbs I would not recover. So I adjusted accordingly and lost 27 pounds in 2.5 months.
Many thanks for your research and knowledge of human health!
That's nothing. Glad to share information that can be useful for all of you. Thanks for always watching my videos.
I am just starting the third week of a 2-6pm eating window and two mostly low-carb, high-nutrient meals at around 2:30pm and 5:30pm. The first week I went all-in without any gentle transition and definitely experienced the "keto flu." That was still going on into the second week, but now finally is gone, except that I still wake up at odd hours pretty hungry and have a hard time going back to sleep, and I still get occasional headaches. The goal is to get from 200 lbs down to 175. My only cheat on the eating window that I just can't give up is morning coffee with 18% milkfat cream. I hope to report back when I reach 175, whenever that turns out to be.
@@HeleneKetoWorks Yeah, but I wanted to go cold turkey just to get on with it. I am now down 18# in 8 weeks. The keto flu is long behind me. I only do one meal per day now and I have cut the eating window for that meal to sometime between 3 and 6pm. I am going to have to get a new photo for my TH-cam profile. I don't recognize the slightly pudgy guy in the picture.
How ya doin on Keto?
The reason you wake up early and can't get back to sleep is because your blood glucose levels have dropped too low overnight
THANK YOU DR. BERG! 🙂 HEALTHY KETO FOR THE WIN YALL! 🎉HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY ❤
No problem. Healthy Keto for the Win!
That was a really useful reminder.... thanks Doc and God bless.

Most welcome! Be well
I’m learning so much about keto. I’m constantly checking ingredients. I checked the ingredients on some beef patties I bought and found that white sugar or dextrose was added. I threw them away. I’ve never been into keto snacks or protein shakes. I eat limited berries with plain Greek yogurt
Dr. Eric Berg, can you please do a video on Cluster Headaches? There is barely any content available about this. In general we need much more awareness about CH’s!
@@HeleneKetoWorks I have but this is very different than a headache/migraine.
Hey Dr. Berg, could you please consider making a video on Thalassemia and how to possibly manage symptoms? Thank you!
Thanks for the video suggestion!
Dr berg my friend is on keto but is doing everything right, but is also on big pharma tablets for anti depressants. She isn't losing any weight and I personally believe it's because of the tablets that cause weight gain. What advice can you give me in order to help her with this issue? She isn't ready to go off the tablets yet unfortunately due to the false idea that she needs to be normal but some advice from you would go such a long way 🙏😊
Hello. Please see here: th-cam.com/video/b2cylXlGLsk/w-d-xo.html
Another key point to consider....count total carbs in any product, not net carbs. The net carbs amounts can be very deceiving and spike glucose and insulin!
Thanks
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
My only carb cheat food is sourdough bread made with heirloom flour. I only have it about once a month and after that meal I'll fast for 24 to 36 hours.
I've followed you for years, great videos. What do you recommend for people in africa and asia where rice and beans are staple foods. Can they still get benefits from fasting? Best regards, Greta
fantastic video, as always, Dr Berg!
Glad you liked it!
I did dirty keto couple of years back got severe problems and quit. Now I am doing keto again only with fish, cheese, eggs, kefir, greens, veggies nothing else. I look younger and feels great.
I find it incredibly hard to sustain. I am sky diving a lot, out at sea on my boat and generally burning a lot of energy and was getting dizzy spells on the keto. If I ever had an office job then I may try it again, or if I get super ill I’ll give it another go. I can’t risk it currently with the sports I do✌🏻🇬🇧
Once I reached my weight I found the same problem especially those dizzy spells. I'd reduced my eating window to two hours. Now I alternate days betwwn that IF and 'normal' 3 meal day with a few carbs like 2 slices of Gluten Free Toast with my egg bacon mushroom sauerkraut breakfast. So many of these vids are directed at overweight insulin resistant people. Sounds like you're pretty healthy !
I was doing low carb - protein and have since 2017, it’s only recently I started to get dizzy spells, and didn’t know why?!
what about MCT oil on tea or coffee during fast?
I'm currently on carnivore diet to reverse my prediabetes. Does anyone know if the lactose in my vitamins and medicines is a problem, how much is to much?
Please add this video to your Dr. Berg Video Classics playlist.
Can a person with osteoporosis eat a keto diet? If so how low can a person go on carb grams and be safe? Please do a video on osteoporosis and keto diet together.
U can make a video on repeated topics which you have already done please explore other disease as well which many are not even aware of like hidradenitis supportiva
Been doing keto 7 years, everyone keeps telling me I look sick, that I'm too thin.
Better than being the opposite!
@penultimania4295 Depends on what level of carbs you're talking about. Many folks do very successful long term keto with a range of 30 to 60 grams carbs per day!
Some people might be jealous and simply seeking to bring you down.
Try carnivore. I saw someone on youtube speaking on this, but he was vegetarian and looking sick, UT when he changed to carnivore, one can see the difference. Might help.
Is it because they are all obese?
