- For nearly five years, the Rolex Explorer (Ref. 14270, 36mm) was my favorite automatic watch-until last year (2019) when I received the Squale 30 ATMOS 60th Anniversary SUB-39 Limited Edition with no date. Since then, this vintage inspired diver has become my favorite watch of all time. But Squale has now released two new permanent versions of the SUB-39 for 2020, signifying that this line of watches will become a fixture of the brand alongside their more iconic 1521 (50 ATMOS), 2002 (101 ATMOS), and Squalematic (60 ATMOS).

A bit late to the show, but Squale is such a fantastic maker of professional divers. These cases are quite beautiful. The lugs have a chamfer that gives the lugs a bit of a twisted appearance. Quite elegant. You would have to look very hard to find better value for price. They are quite possibly my favorite watch brand.
Forget the haters squale has serious historicity and should be respected especially for the price it’s a unique value and historical proposition.

😆 so true. But in all seriousness, I’ve always wondered and continue to wonder why everyone on TH-cam seems to feel a pilots watch with 30 meter water resistance should be a concern in rain or shower or even a pool. 30 meters is 98 feet! I’ve never half that deep and don’t imagine I ever will. How could rain or swimming pool damage a watch with a 30 meter rating? Why does anyone who isn’t a professional diver want anything more? Heck 10 meters should be enough right? I don’t get it.
@@ilmostro16 it isn’t legit 30 meters. It is 3 atm in pressure. The pressure under water increase a lot quite fast. So 3 atm (3 times the normal air pressure around us) is not water proof for 30 meter under water
@@ilmostro16 , with a 30m wr watch you should be careful when you wash your hands, let alone swimming. Just google “water resistance ratings for watches”.

Squale, a brand I learned about on this channel.
When you listen to the history you immediately want to buy one... but so many watches so little time (and money).
Although if you look at the value for money you’re getting a bargain IMO. I wonder if Squale holds its value (like Sinn).
I also liked your listing of favourite watch, brand etc in one of the comments. You should do a video on favourite watches and limit yourself to 15 min ... that would be a challenge I think 😊 And no, nobody could ever blame you!

Favourite brand: Omega (as my parents owned a "couple" watch when they got married, not to mention their rich history and contribution to WW2, I find it very beautiful)
Favourite watch: Christopher Ward C60 gmt (as I bought to keep track of my companion back in Korea, replacing my Breitling colt gmt lol, not to mention a spec monster and gorgeous finishing)
Chronograph: Vintage Zodiac automatic chronograph two tone
Luxury watch: not yet chosen, as it's not my priority atm (but eyeing an omega planet ocean lol)

I adore my 1521 Full Luminous. It makes my old tired eyes sing with the best legibility of any watch and a +2 seconds a day accuracy. If that weren't enough, I think it looks quite fetching on the black mesh Squale band. This new Squale with the Arabic numbers is quite lovely but I have to stick with my 1521 Full Luminous. Thank you for a well done review.
Squale watches are amazing. I own 3 of them and they get a lot of wrist time, as a result of their great look and quality!

My Squale 2002 has been a trusted and faithful companion for some years. It keeps excellent time and is utterly bomb proof. Additionally, when it does require a service I will not be tied to having to send it back to the manufacturer and be at the mercy of their pricing policy.
Hi TGV,I read a comment on another channel posted by a professional Diver, who said that they use Dive Computers now, and that dive watches
really aren’t used in a professional capacity.However the history of dive watches is still great.

Squale is a great brand. I did my 20 in the Marine Corps. After I retired, I opened up a dive school. Both Doxa and Squale are my go to brands. BTW, when I am out and about, I wear my Jenny. Good to know that you appreciate quality brands. Semper Fi 🇺🇲

I gotta say I’ve been binge watching your show and I’ve learned so much, and I love how you really delve into every watch company that you review no matter how expensive or cheap ( talking to you mvmt!!) they are.
I bought the Squale 1545 in gilt because of you!! But I must say I am not a fan of them I think other watches around this price range to me at least are alittle better.
Please don’t change old chap you help people like me learn so much and also see and learn about watches we may never be able to own!!
This is my second favourite intro you did after the Fortis B-42 cosmonaut when it went up to space. This one has a different theme under water as it's a diver, Both are absolute masterclasses TGV!

My favourite watch of this year which was released at the end of 2019 was the Orient Star Sports Outdoor in Green. I call it the Orient Mountaineer as apposed to the Seiko Alpinist and Rolex Explorer. Orient Star is the Grand Seiko of Orient. This Mountaineer is way cheaper than an Explorer and way better than an Alpinist. I tried the Alpinist on and the dial real estate was way too small for me. This Mountaineer has a beautiful Green dial, cream patina markings, good lume, 50 hour power reserve indicator, black PVD case polished and brushed, good quality mocha brown leather strap, diamond style screwdown and signed crown, see through caseback with nice perlage and gold touches and all for around $630 USD. I was so impressed at the quality and value I bought it and couldn't be happier! 😊 The Mountaineer is a true field watch that does to the Alpinist what the Kamasu did to the SKX. Great video, please do a review of this Orient Star Mountaineer as you will not be disappointed!

A quick question...which sub-39 style did you choose? I’m only wondering because I purchased the Arabic numerals dial...but the bezel is not fully lumed...my watch came with the same bezel that is on TGV’s personal watch...I don’t know if it’s a quality control miss...I know that TGV said that these that were prototypes...but seems odd?!?!? If you purchased the Arabic numerals dial, I’m really interested in which bezel is installed on yours...thanks

When looking for one to buy, I found they've produced Rolex Sub copies which are for sale on Gnomon, Mercedes hands and cyclops windows quite a lot of variants for sale there that don't appear on the official Squale website. Shame there are no crown guards or a metal bracelett on the Sub 39's. Are Squale a bit like Steinhart?
18:30 Brietling Superocean was released in 1957 not 1964 thus their new capsule release for 2020 is called “Superocean Heritage 57.”

These sub39 are stunning! I may consider the arabic one over the 1521 as it seems more versitile. I've recently tried the blue one and felt in love with its case shape. Possibly my FIRST dive watch!

Ive lost all my love for seiko. They have 0 value proposition these days. $500 spent with seiko dont even get you sapphire glass, solid endlinks or a milled clasp. You have swiss companies out there offering that much.

@@manasraut9377 I own a kmu 48, airman gl0252 and gl0076 grey dial combat sub. Ive been a huge fan of glycine for 20 yrs now. Cant go wrong with a hamilton or glycine far as value proposition is concerned.

I know I’m late to the party, but I just wanted to thank you for all of your videos on this terrific brand! I now own 2. I purchased the red Montauk from Marc at Long Island Watch, and a blue 1521. I plan on completing the collection with a 1545, and this SuperBlue. Squale is quickly becoming my favorite brand!
A rich description of one of my favorite watch brand. I recently happen to snag an orange minute hand on a 1545, an odd watch out, but an interesting one.
If that is your favorite watch brand, then I already know you have taste and style.

I own a Super Blue for two months now and can confirm, this watch is really a pure class, so simple but yet, so original. As with a 1521, you get some special feeling wearing it. Recommend.

Hi TGV. I loved the octopus Squale. I recently discovered your channel and I really enjoy it. I am an ocean dweller and I love a classic dive watch as much as the next guy but I have been a huge fan of a company from the 80s called Freestyle. It's perfect for days at the beach with the family, weekend kayak camping trips, and snorkeling trips. I like the all-black Lopex III, although, I am afraid you would hate it because of its size and weight. By now I know you gravitate to watches that suit your needs and style and while this watch may not be to your liking, I thought of mentioning this watch company to you because I think they make a great surf and beach watch. I would love to see a video review of these watches, the company, and my beloved Lopex III. I have changed the strap to a paracord strap with a flint and steel and now it's perfect for my long kayak trips.
Wow this was such a great review, so much so I actually have now brought the sub 39 Arabic dial. It really is a stunning piece. Its not like any other diver on the market. So much elegance and character. And with such a great history it's amazing. The quality is excellent. Your reviews really look in to the history of brands and that's a big part of what makes people love watches.

Just ordered the blue 39 sub with date, last night from Marc at Long Island watch. Unfortunately, while being deployed, it will take some time to get it. It will be worth it, though. It's a Great looking timepiece from a fabulous company with deep (pun intended) history.
Another very informative, interesting and professional video on this brand which I enjoyed immensely! It won't be long before I own a Squale. Good stuff!

At 13:35 you can see the "2824" engraved into the movement. Why would this be found on an SW-200?
Good point about the lug width. There was something off about the dimensions, and it made sense when you mentioned the 22mm.
I am blessed with identical tiny 6.25 wrists, and do agree with you that a 39mm diver is the absolute sweetspot. I chose a blackbay 58. (Your next favorite watch?) It deals with your negatives: 20mm lug width, solid crown threading, and in-house powerhouse movement. Whilst still maintaining the positives
Man wouldn't this be a great piece to win.funny I was reading a lot about the sellita sw200 movement and saw soo many people that hate it and have had problems with them such as the ratchet wheel teeth shearing off while manually winding.my Swiss legend abyssos(the original with the stainless case/bracelet,blue dail with blue bezel insert)has the sw200 and I haven't had a single problem with it in the 7,8yrs I've owned it.still runs around +5sec/day,manual wind works perfect as does the automatic works.stem unscrews perfect and setting hands still feels silky smooth as does the date.ive actually enjoyed this movement soo much that I bought another cosc certified sw200-1 movement 2 weeks ago for a diver build of my own ill be starting shortly.id love to hear from anyone here that has a sw200 that they have had problems with such as the ratchet wheel issues a lot have spoken about.
Love the case size at 39mm, the different colour hands are a bit perplexing though. Great video!!

I am so into this watch and am about to pull the trigger on buying a sub39 GMT vintage. I love everything about it EXCEPT no solid end links and no steel bracelet. Not a fan of the mesh one. Can you recommend anywhere I can get solid end links for this watch so it ticks all my boxes?

As a massive Jackie Chan fan from such a young age, the Squale Rambo is shown in the first 5 minutes of Armour of God 2: Operation Condor (1991) not the first instalment. I know this is not your error as the blogs/internet also say Armour of God (1986).
I remember this distinctly, as it is shown in the very beginning of the film to navigate and is also used as a weapon by his co-star later on 😄 Anyway, I thought I’d inform you as your videos are consistently factual and spectacular.

Really appreciate the creativity and the amount of time and work it must take to produce such entertaining content, I just picked up the squale 1545 from island watch and it hasnt left my wrist since Friday, the quality and craftsmanship you get for a little over $500 is incredible, ive always loved the fifty fathoms so when I learned from you that squale made the cases I was immediately interested in the brand so I did some research on my own and was really impressed with all the brand accomplished, i watched you're videos on the 1521 and I'm considering that or this sub39 for my next piece. Looking forward to more tgv content BTW was really surprised to see the Philly landmarks I'm in the 215 Def wasn't expecting to see the spirit of Philadelphia in you're videos don't know why but I always assumed you were in England or something lol..small world .. anyway thanks for the great content 👍

Nice watch but I still think the captain cook beats it for looks. 39mm is small for a dive watch, most want a bit more wrist presence. I agree that the captain cook isn't a real divers watch, but most people only swim in the pool these days. It does seem great value for money though, which is always a plus. The rado captain cook is overpriced, but you can get it for less if you buy nearly new. And it's such a beautiful watch. It's light for an automatic, wears beautiful and slim, it's a winner .
Great video as always! I’m seeing the black Arabic model with a white triangle in the bezel as in your video but also there’s a version with a orange triangle in the bezel as well. Other than the triangle color, there’s no apparent differences. Any idea about this? Why one is orange and the other is white. On Squale’s own website it just shows the white triangle version.
