I wouldn't say these are watches to avoid, they're great watches - but just watches to make sure you've tried on before buying. So 'Watches not to blind buy' would be a more appropriate title.

I think if someone buys a watch blind without an good returns policy and a mind open to returning if they don't love it, they shouldn't be buying that watch.
I own one of the watches on the list (the Black Bay 54). I tried one on at an AD despite not even considering a submariner-style watch before, and I absolutely fell in love with it immediately. Months later it's my daily driver and I have no regrets whatsoever.

Maybe "The Best Watch ..." is not your watch . The Moonwatch is the best watch in the world , according to many people , due to heritage , clear and simple looks and unchanged design over all the years. Many people like , but does that mean you HAVE to like it too ? If many people say , jump off that cliff it is the best experience ever , do you need to do that also ? If you like to swim/dive with your watch , the Speedy is not the best watch . If you wear your watch in activities , the hesalite version is not the best watch . For every reason somebody says it is the best watch , somebody else can give a reason not being it . Both are correct , if you buy 1 , it is your watch , just because somebody else likes it , doesn't mean you like it .

My thoughts exactly. One example being Tudor Black Bay 54 having a 37mm case is presented as a drawback but it's a SELLING POINT for me. I don't like massive watches that are bigger in diameter than my wrist. I think that watches that are 45mm and above look awful on most people unless they have the tree trunk sized wrists to support the dinner plate they are carrying around on their wrist.

I bought a Casioak in black with contrasting white hands and markers. But the negative LCD display it comes with is almost impossible to read. So bought a gray Casioak with a normal LCD display, and swapped that module over to the black case and dial. Then added lumed markers too. Much easier to read and use. Too bad it ended up costing around $300 to make it useful.... Oh, and in the swapping, I broke the backlight off the module, so that was cool.

I think in this current insane bubble in watches, my advice would be to sit back and check out the usedlistings. The longer you wait, the better the prices seem to get.
And avoid Rolex like the plague. They're just overhyped , overpushed and overpromoted by insufferable social media and hence, the bubble blew up.
Every day I see more Rolex on the used market and prices are coming down hard. What goes up like a lunatic will come down like a lunatic.
Still won't buy them though, as I currently can't stand what happened to the brand.
And we're in recession right now, no matter the BS of the talkingheads. It's a global recession too. So just be patient would be my motto.

Recession or no recession if you buy or bought an Omega, Tudor, Seiko etc at rrp you would instantly lose money out the door. With Rolex (most steel pieces anyway) they’ll always again in value at rrp, even if now less than they did. Still a great brand to acquire from the AD if you can, financially, and if you love their designs, as I do, it’s win-win imho.

After getting into mechanical watches, I honestly think I like a manual wind over an auto a lot of the time. With all my autos, I never know if it is near full wind or not, and accuracy dips if they are below 50%. With a manual wind, you just wind it fully before putting it on the wrist every day and you know you are good to go. Also for the Speedy, a rotor would just block the view of that beautiful movement.

    • @hittingreens5646

@hittingreens5646 this is what I did for a while, but it began taking too long to keep them all wound and running. A pitfall of having 30+ automatic watches. Now I just pick the one I'm wearing for the day and wind it. So to me, hand-wound or auto is a completely moot point, I couldn't care less if it's either, as long as it's mechanical 🤷🏻‍♂️

Accidentally bought a vintage Doxa on Ebay, having only seen it very briefly late at night while half asleep (Totally my fault), and when it arrived, it was half the size I expected.....Bloody ladies watch, not a gents. My ex boss bought that one off me. The other mistake was buying a REALLY cheap 'Mechanical' watch, that I wanted just to take it apart, and it turned out that the seller was lying, and it was quartz, dressed up with fake cogs to look mechanical on the pics! I have a collection of watches that embrace Rolex, Seiko, Citizen, Tag Heuer and recently the Tudor BB54. It’s so refreshing to wear a watch that doesn’t dwarf my wrist like the Rolex, Seiko & Tag Heuer. It’s the watch I wear the most because it’s an understatement and does what all watches should do tell the time and not be flipped as investments or shout “steal me”.

I am large of wrist at 7.5 inches. So I favor watches 42mm or above. If I want to consider something smaller, I would need to go try it on. Though to be fair, you should never buy without trying it on anyway. That said, thus far I have bought all my watches blind (online), and so far its worked out nicely.
I have a 2009 Navitimer ref A23322, blue dial with batons. I bought it second hand. Is it a busy dial? Yes. By and large the tiny silvered scales of the slide rule are too small to read, at least with my old eyes. But, those silvered scales are decorative more than they are practical and instead the inticracy make the dial beautiful in it's own way by playing with the light. I love it.
I also have a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, black dial, titanium on the 98B bracelet (ref: 5015-12B30-98B). Is it a big watch? Oh yes. Does the titanium make it feel too light? Actually, no. While I haven't handled the steel version to compare it to, I find my titanium edition still has quite enough heft to feel substantial. Probably the sheer size combined with the large three barrelled movement and with it being on the bracelet. And the quality is awesome. It feels solid like it's hewn from rock. The bezel action is incredible; audible and tactiley. The bracelet is an amazing piece of engineering and craftmanship, which would only let down for some by the lack of a quick adjust, but not by me. I love this thing, and it's often my first choice to wear.
But I consider myself lucky having bought these blind and to have got away with it thus far. I have several watches on my shortlist for a next purchase, and a few of them I definitely need to look at first before committing money to them. Be careful out there people.

As readable as Finnegans Wake! I got a chuckle out of that one. Most of these watches are way out of my price range. The only advice I can give from the lower price range is that if you have an hankering for a vintage mechanical dive watch, you can't get more appropriate than a real vintage Seiko Turtle. A true tool watch that has been worn by more real divers than just about anything else. They were made to last, require little maintenance and IMO are a great looking watch. The winding won't hack or manual wind, which is a minor inconvenience to me, but may be a deal killer for others. It is a big watch, but it still looks good on my smallish wrist.

For me the Tudor Black Bay Bronze with slate dial is the perfect dive watch. I love mine and in addition to the grey leather and two different fabric straps from the factory have had quite a few made for it. I think though I'd prefer it in steel, as it can be a pain to keep bright (have to do the ketchup thing every couple of months). Why on earth they don't make a proper sized 43mm steel Black Bay dive watch baffles me. Instead as you mentioned they came up with some stupid wee thing at 37mm, I tried it on at WoS and it looked like it had shrunk in the watch. It's a ladies' version.
Mind you my smallest watch is an early 00s IWC Doppel at 42mm, with a Panerai 514 the biggest which measures 47mm but wears surprisingly modestly. I have an 8in wrist, hardly uncommon these days. I really don't get why so many recent releases are 1950s-sized tiddlers. People are quite a lot bigger today than they used to be 70 years ago.

As much as I love the Carrera the two Tissots I bought for two of my sons are very nice indeed - esp the Gentleman (naff name) Powermatic on the brown leather strap. I do though have a hankering for a Seiko Prospex Solar and which might be an early New Year pressie to myself if there’s a deal to be done anywhere. A watch possessed by a demon? Strap it on and someone will have to call a priest. The H. Moser & Cie Vantablack watch is so black it reflects no light, but somehow the Casioak's black is blacker. As a retired airline pilot with over 35 years experience, I can tell you that the so called Breitling Pilot's watch is both ridiculous and impractical.
As a professional, I used and considered the Rolex GMT II to be the best all-rounder for a professional aviator.
That aside, a watch for Pilot's needs to be uncluttered, easy to read and give good illumination. A stopwatch function is handy but not necessary because all flight decks have a chronometer with stopwatch functions.

Just so you know, even full size E6B computers don't always match up! That's right; even though they may be 3"-6" across, the markings don't match up. Hence, it would be unrealistic to expect the markings on watch like the Navitimer to match up.
Secondly, concerning the Breitling Navitimer, there are other, less expensive watches that also have a similar look and function. I'm talking about offerings from Citizen. Their Navihawks, Nighthawks, and Skyhawks also feature an E6B bezel similar to the Navitimer's. However, they're all far less expensive than the Navitimer. Finally, because the Navihawks and Skyhawks have atomic timekeeping (denoted by "A-T" by Citizen), so they'll tell much better time than the Navitimer ever could.

    • @mrz80
      @mrz80 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1
