Blower would not work at all. Compressor light comes on, but nothing kicking on when blower switch is turned on. Worth trying the Blower Motor Resistor. Checked fuse's 24 @ 25. both appeared to be OK.

10 years later and this video not only diagnosed the problem but showed how to fix it! Awesome work! Took about 15 minutes to fix - mainly because I had a hell of a time getting the screws into the holes properly (couldn't get under the shield to see it)!!😁
    Thanks for the video!

My 01 Dakota was doing the same thing on A/C, suspect it’s the same issue just the time of year between heat and cold. I was thinking it was the fan switch. How did you diagnose it to be the resistor that you replaced, just a student in life!
Will try to replace this 1st to see if it’s the issue
    Thanks

Its an awkward angle to lay on, but can you get a pick or small screwdriver in there and pry while pushing on the tab? The problem is that the resistor can sometimes melt a bit when failing and distort the shape within the connector.

It will burn out again in a short period of time, your just fixing the symptom. You need to replace the blower motor which is the cause of the problem. Amazon is the best place to buy the blower motor, a lot cheaper than the local auto parts store (don't forget to buy an universal wire harness also).

I went through 3 of these resistors on my 2001 Dakota. The problem is the 5-pin connector is not rated for the amp load on the highest and 2nd highest fan speed settings. Heat and oxidation would build up to the point the connector would melt and fuse to the resistor. So even with a new resistor block and connector it will just happen again. I finally solved it by soldering the wires directly to the pins on the resistor block. You have to carefully cut away part of the shroud to get good access to solder. Once done, fill the whole cavity with silicone sealer or epoxy as a potting compound. Mine has been working fine for four years now. Also, you can get new resistor block, connector with wires, and even new fan/motor assembly for very little $ on Amazon. Don't pay dealership prices.

Took it to my neighborhood mechanic who knew all about this issue...it's been over 4 years since he fixed it and the problem hasn't returned. Jim Bennett there is a door like feature behind the dash that allows the directions to change. I’ve heard those are a big job. But the resistor won’t cause this it’s basically like the door won’t move to direct your other vents to receive the blowing air

No dash removal for any work. Power and speed of the blower work but the direction air control selector doesn't care what you select air only comes out of the windshield vent. And the resistor you replaced! I've not found it's location must be somewhere totally different on my truck!

Hey everyone, I had issues with my 2004 Dakota blowing the resistors and the issue ended up being the wiring harness/connector. I went through a couple resistors so looking into it more the connector and almost 1 1/2 of of wire was corroded. I checked with my local parts supplier and they wanted almost 100 just for the connector! Reading this was a design flaw and people actually started using 2008 improved connector, I bought one more resistor, cut off the connector, stripped the wires, and soldered the clean wires to the resistor itself. I have not had an issues since. Carefully read your trucks schematic for wiring, or simply plug the resistor in and mark the colours of the wires on the resistor to ensure proper polarity.
So before you replace switches, blower motors, check these resistors which is the cheapest part (4.99 CAD) BEFORE going to your mechanic and paying 85 -90 for them to misdiagnose like many others, causing a headache for many dakota owners.
    Hope this helps someone

My lowest switch setting does not turn on the a/c, but the rest of the settings do work. The switch settings actually seem like I lost the highest blow setting for the second highest setting...like the settings are askew. Thought it could be the switch. Is it more likely the blower motor resister?

Thank you Thank you!!!!! I have a Dodge Durango 2003, part was different, but your video saved me repair shop maintenance cost....can't image what that would have cost. I took the two screws out, unplugged it as you said, went to Advanced Auto, the part was around $10.00. Plugged it in and the switched WORKED!!! GOT HEAT!!! You should be rewarded for your help,...have a Paypal account? Again THANK YOU,

Old video so hope for a responds. Have Dodge Dakota 2002, AC and Heater aren't blowing in. Very cold. How likely is it the resistor? And not something else?

Do any of your speeds work or are they all out?
As for some items to check. Fuses? Resistor could have blown or could be loose. Take down those bolts and check it out. Cheap part to replace or at least have as spare.
Your blower motor could be out and needing to be replaced. Let me know how it goes.

I do have a few questions...
Our heater and A/C work in the front but it only blows on the windshield, not other options like feet or face. Is it a resistor plug too?
And we have controls for the back as well, the fans work but the A/C and heater doesn't work, what could it be for that problem?
We have a 2001 Dodge Durango

2001 Dakota here. five minutes. most of the time was spent contorting to get a view from the foot well. There are three screws (hex heads). Two cannot be seen unless you peer straight up at the location, but that might not be physically possible for a dood over 5'6". To gain access to one of the screws requires the removal of the screw that holds a black, hard plastic hose. Once that screw is removed, you can move the hard plastic hose just enough to access the screw attaching the resistor to the truck. this is a $10 fix. I completely thought I was in for a new blower. Thank you @Scouser Tech for posting. I guess, I'll never walk alone.

I have a similar problem with my 02' Durango except my heater does not turn on at all. My rear blower works no problem but my front heater does not work and its getting cold in NJ. Would the resistor still be the issue or something else. I can feel heat coming from the vents while i drive which helps a little but the blower does not seem to re be running at all. Thanks for your time friend

Sounds like your blower motor has gone on the front. Can be fixed pretty easy. I don't have vehicle anymore so cant make a video but some good ones out there. As for the resistor do your speeds work on the working rear blower?

Excellent description and Removal / Installation Instructions , you forgot to mention taking off the screw for the air duct , the one screw is a real pain to get onto , am using a screwdriver type handle with an extension for the screw that is buried at back , if you have a flex shaft type extension or screwdriver handle ( 1/4" drive) I would recommend trying that to get back screw out / in .
