I've had an on-going problem with my 01 Dodge Dakota for years. This is by far the best video I've come across to remedy the problem. Dodge has a problem with their HVAC system and should offer owners a recall repair. Until that happens, I'm glad that there are videos like this to help owners who may not always have the money to pay outrageous dealer fees for repairs.
Wow! You are awesome!! You explained a whole lot more than any video I've watched ( and I've watched quite a few ) so glad I found you!! You taught me other valuable skills i will use forever. You are very thorough. Havent tried it yet but im very pleased with your video!! Thank you Rich!!
Before you buy a new one, try unplugging the connector and plug it back in. I just did that and my completely dead blower motor sprung to life. It works on all settings including the 3rd one which hasn't worked in over 2 years! Definitely try replugging it first.
UPDATE! February 10, 2019: I looked at your video again and saw the part where you first banged on the blower motor a few times. I never have, so, I did, and voila! It started running! It appears that there is a loose connection in the wiring there, which should be easy to fix! THANK YOU for your great video, you saved me a ton of grief! Just goes to show you, check the simple things first, you just might find a quick and easy solution!
Today my fan stopped working, I Googled the problem, got this video, it was exactly what was wrong with mine, I followed it step-by-step, and my fan works now. Thank You ☺☺☺
Hey - thanks a ton for this video. I know next to nothing about cars but you explained everything so well that even I was able to replace this part in my truck, all by myself even! The kit cost me $15 and works perfectly and I couldn't be happier.
Just installed a new resistor on my 2004 Durango. Your video helped me find out the problem and get it fixed!!Thanks for your video!!! Two thumbs up! God bless
Thanks so much for this very easy to follow video, I first tested my blower motor just the way you did and it ran fine, then replaced the resister and everything runs great with all speeds! You saved me a big bill at a shop! Thanks!!
Agreed. Wonderful Helpful Video. I may go straight for the jugular and replace my resistor too. This could have been the sharp electrical burning smell I smelled once (coming thru the inside cabin air vents) in my Dodge Dakota 2004 Truck. My Blower Fan only goes full blast or not at all. At least I can still turn it off.
The resister replacement is a quick and dirty car lot fix that doesn't solve the real problem. Usually, the blower motor is drawing to many amps and overheating the resistor and the wires.
Mine stopped blowing air altogether. No matter what setting you click it to . I'm glad I watched this video before spent hundreds at a garage diagnosing it.
Thanks for the video...I almost ordered a 40 dollar blower motor but luckily i watched this video and checked my resistor first and i had the same issue in my 02 durango!

Thank you! My neighbor just had the exact same problem. Cut my time in half on diagnosis thanks to your video. They just had a loose wire. Keep the good videos coming brother!
Thanks for the video, my connector was stuck due to over heating, so I gave it a bath in WD40(Wires end up) and it popped apart after and hour in the bath, good tip about the motor, will explore.......OBTW my resister replacement was $8 from Autozone......
Thanks this helped saved me from buying a new blower saved me like $110 bucks mine wasn't as bad as yours it was just a resistor 12 bucks at O'Reilly's

Thanks a ton. I thought a new resistor was going to solve the problem, but it was also a totally corroded connector. I can make it work if I wiggle or hold it in the right spot. New connector on order should completely resolve. Thank you for posting such an informative video!
This video gave me confidence to fix my own Durango. To bypass the testing, well, I'll just replace the resistor, the blower and the fuse. That should cover it.
This video is exactly what I was looking for. My fan in my 2001 Durango just stopped one day. Checked both fuses, fine. Next I'll be doing this. Thanks
Wonder if you’re able to identify what the source of the corrosion was was it overheating almost burning that caused of corrosion or perhaps condensation that got down in that area odd place to get moisture for the pretty cool that you were able to pick up a brand new unit at the junkyard it looks like they just replaced it on the vehicle
Hi! Thanks for posting on how to test for the blower and resistor. Bought a k11 micra that sat for two and a half years. Got it running but the AC blower did not work but still has gas in it. I'm gonna fix this next.
Yeah I’ve changed my resistor 6 times 3 connectors later and 3 blower motors later the last two pins in the resistor are burnt up is this because I have my heat always on high
No its because Dodge uses cheap parts in order for their partners to make extra money. Their window regulators are trash. I've replaced every window but all break. They use plastic parts inside to hold a tight cable and expect it to actually hold? If they used a metal part inside would avoid it. But Dodge knows this. Same as the switches on the driver door, they tend to go bad cuz they are cheap. Sad cuz I like the concept of the Dakota. I'd rather have a Dodge truck than a Ford or Chevy but Dodge has obvious areas to improve
This is so sad, I grew up whit my dad using American cars and trucks and I was doing the same, I went through the tree big ones and now based in my son experience I'm thinking to switch for a Toyota truck, still I have a dodge Dakota very poor constructed and a 2014 ford Mustang whit transmission, suspension, breaks, fuel, cooling, integrity and sound problems at the point that I'm going to sale it and buy a Toyota 86 for my wife. it is incredible the lack of materials quality and the poor design. Toyota, finally I'm ready to give you a tray.
I've followed the video step by step. In his case the blower motor resistor was bad, but mine works. Where do i go from here? What's the next thing i can check. Any advice?
Thank you so much for posting this video. I knew something strange was going on because it would work on low but if you increased the fan power it would completely shut down and low wouldn't work for a period of time. I couldn't unplug so i assumed it was bad like yours. I took a picture after I removed it (yes the left screw was a problem @Dave W).
@@jimbennett1834 I do know why there is a vaccuum line that sticks out of the firewall behind the motor its really small about width of a coffee stirrer and really easy to miss. What happens is the vacuum line becomes disconected this vacuum line controls the flap that opens and closes on the bottom of the vents the flap gets stuck without vaccuum from the line. Thats why you only have air blowing from defrost. I actually fixed mine with a coffee stirrer and black electrical tape then eventually I bought line and fit it over the little piece sticking out from the center of the dash in the firewall (when you open the hood you look behind the motor for the little vaccuum line sticking out of the body under the hood behind the dash).
I have a question... Would one be able to wire the colors together without a resistor? I'm the type of person, either you have the blower on, and on full. Or not on at all. Having these blowers running low burns these resistors. Just bad design. Thanks for this video!
Hi, Any idea, what is wrong, if the blower a/c wasn't working at all, I changed the resistor and it worked fine (tip: once i changethe whole resistor, the other time I just changed the fuse on it which is only some cents value) AND it worked fine but only setting the control to 4, both times the same, looks like an extra heat is warming the resistor too hot and it burns, any ideas to help fixing it to burn and only work in 4.
richpin06a Hi Rich, yes ti Works only on the high setting (4th position) of the switch, but if I keep it for a while, say some 40 minutes it burns out again ( the resistance fuse) ( :) I tried with two fuses the other day and it worked for a Little more time just for once, I know bad idea:{ ) thanks again.
what caused the resister to go bad to begin with? we need a update on the new restior u put in we want to know how long it took before it went bad too?
Great video. i wish I had found it when I had to do this job the first time several years ago. In the past 6 years I've gone through 4 resistor blocks and 2 fused connectors. Factory connector was melted and and fused. The replacement lasted a couple years and did the same thing. I then used the extra set of wires that comes with the new connector and just connected those in the correct positions to a new resistor block. Used shrink wrap on each little connector so it would not touch the one next to it. The most recent resistor lasted about two months. As you know the fan runs only on high speed when the block goes out. The fan motor obviously works but I'm wondering if there is some way it could be drawing excess current and causing these resistor blocks to overheat. Thanks.
+Scotty S. An update for anyone in the same boat. I removed the fan and sure enough it did not spin freely. The motor shaft bushing probably was overdue for some oil thus creating some drag and drawing excess amps. The trouble is the way the fan is designed you cant reach the shaft to oil the bushing. So head over to Amazon. I was able to get an aftermarket replacement fan for $40 TYC brand), a new resistor block and connector together for $12, and an extra resistor block to keep for a spare for $6 (both Dorman brand). Bolt it all in and splice the new wires in and it works great. So folks, always pull the fan and check that it turns easily when replacing the resistor block. And at these prices, it may be worth replacing all of it preemptively. Cheers!
Can the resistor go bad even if it doesn't look bad? (No corrosion) my blower would only work on high, over time got weaker, than finally stopped blowing for good. The resistor still looks good but not sure on how to test it
Hey Thanks a million! The exact same corrosion problem on mine. Just wiggled enough green stuff out of the connector to make the blower go until the weekend, Junkyard time!
how do you remove the plug that goes into the resiste? i thought my blower motor qas broken so i was about to buy a new one but the plug was toasted and the person said as long as i get a good connection from good metal to good metal it was fine
Ok I broke some rules here. About 5 yrs ago my fan stopped working. Instead of doing it right I cut out the 2 connections/harness. I then taped the wires directly. This fixed the problem. Well 5 yrs later It's out again. Does this mean it's burned out? And if I replace it will it work?
thank you for your very helpful and instructional video, and i also must add that you sound just like peter, from family guy. not trying to disrespect or offend....
generally if you have that kind of resistance the blower motor is working harder than it needs to be and is simply wearing out. When my blower locked up one day it took out the resistor pack with it
I have the answer and learned it the hard way. I went through 3 of these resistors on my Dakota. The problem is the 5-pin connector is not rated for the amp load on the highest and 2nd highest fan speed settings. Heat and oxidation would build up to the point the connector would melt and fuse to the resistor. So even with a new resistor block and connector it will just happen again. I finally solved it by soldering the wires directly to the pins on a new resistor block. You have to carefully cut away part of the shroud to get good access to solder. Once done, you can even fill the whole cavity with silicone sealer or epoxy as a potting compound. Mine has been working fine for four years now. Also, you can get new resistor block, connector with wires, and even new fan/motor assembly for very little $ on Amazon. Don't pay dealership prices.

I just did this in my Durango a few months ago and now I have to do the one in my Grand Cherokee. The part isnt more than $30 ish dont get robbed at the parts counter.
richpin06a It is a 1997 and I have ordered the dealer service manual for it from "Books 4 cars.com" and these are the manuals the dealers use to fix your car from the car lots. Very informative and in-depth books. Those Hayes books are ok but they don't give enough space for your specific model of vehicle. What I plan on doing is relocating the resistor unit where I can get to it again in the future if I need to. It just has to have a way of keeping it cool while in use. Just use a heat sink from a computer and a computer fan which is also 12 V and that should do the trick.
My guess would be a poor connection at the pins and sockets on the resistor block. Probably the ground wire makes intermittent contact. I got sick of the connector melting so I soldered the wires directly to the pins. The pins and sockets are not rated for the amp load on the highest speed. Heat builds up, the contacts oxidize, and that leads to more heat.
Smashing diagnostics and repair :-)) No wonder it didnt want to work lol, i bet the old resistors were ok, just dampness killed the connectors, thank god it was nice to get to :-))
That fan is just as noisy as mine. I put a new one on and its just as loud. Also I am on the third connector and 6th resistor. The newest connector harnes has larger wires. The plastic between the positive and negative leads is really thin. If the wire heats up it melts. It is not corrosion. It is a meltdown.
Just found out what might be going on with my truck. This time the motor was not working, The new harness and the resistors were working. What I found may be on on going issue that I never seen until today. Water. Water is getting into the motor from somewhere in the duct system. It was getting dark and we have storms moving in. Will have to find the water problem tomorrow if it doesnt rain. This water issue may also be shorting out the resistor pack.
@@RichpinTv You know, it's the original 04 blower motor. The darned plug fries every few years. The first time was just out of warrenty. Thos weekend will be the third one
Anyone have trouble getting the screw out on the drivers side. (left)? The right side screw came right out. Maybe a thin walled socket will work as there seems to be a small plastic flange up there covering part of the screw.
thanks for the video.. when removing the clip, whoever owned the truck before me mustve broke the black and red release clips... anyway to get this out? @richpin06a
Great info but I would add a warning about airbags yo disconnect and isolate from grounding the negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag capacitors to discharge to avoid airbag accidental deployment as per the dodge ship manual. Thanks
I had the repair first done at a gas station for about 350. Ever since I have done it myself. I guess a bad design by Chrysler. Same resistor and wiring plug has failed probably 5 or 6 times since. Blower motor always tests okay. Have to be a contortionist to reach and unscrew the resistor but otherwise a simple fix. Dorman sells both resistor and plug together. Don't just replace the resistor if the hot pin is burnt. Replace both resistor and plug at the same time or the resistor will fail within a month. Doesn't appear to be a moisture issue as the car is in Southern California.
Nice you saved me alot of wondering have the same issue we found fuses were all good and blower working but never thought of this being bad I'll be checking this tomorrow 🤙 Thank you

Can the corrosion cause a fire or anything?
Mines ain’t getting ground. What does that mean?
You just saved the day my friend. Thanks a bunch!
Glad to hear it!
I just did this in my Durango a few months ago and now I have to do the one in my Grand Cherokee. The part isnt more than $30 ish dont get robbed at the parts counter.
So what year Dakota are you working on in the vid? I have a 1997 and it don't look the same as yours.
Davie Jones This is a 2003.
richpin06a It is a 1997 and I have ordered the dealer service manual for it from "Books 4 cars.com" and these are the manuals the dealers use to fix your car from the car lots. Very informative and in-depth books. Those Hayes books are ok but they don't give enough space for your specific model of vehicle. What I plan on doing is relocating the resistor unit where I can get to it again in the future if I need to. It just has to have a way of keeping it cool while in use. Just use a heat sink from a computer and a computer fan which is also 12 V and that should do the trick.
i love how you sounded like peter grifin for a moment at 1:25
all jokes aside, good video
I get that alot that i sound like peter grifin.
I have replaced blower and wires and now my blower comes on some days then some days it want come on at all. Its goes off and on what could this be?
My guess would be a poor connection at the pins and sockets on the resistor block. Probably the ground wire makes intermittent contact. I got sick of the connector melting so I soldered the wires directly to the pins. The pins and sockets are not rated for the amp load on the highest speed. Heat builds up, the contacts oxidize, and that leads to more heat.
Thank your so much. Helped me get mine working again
When rewireing wires how u know which one goes to which wire
Wire colors
You're a good teacher
Smashing diagnostics and repair :-))
No wonder it didnt want to work lol, i bet the old resistors were ok, just dampness killed the connectors, thank god it was nice to get to :-))
Awesome video, this is how you should make mechanical vids on youtube!
Wow, thanks!
What's making it do that it happens to me 6 time's ?
Great useful video, trying to diagnose my 03 Durango right now
I enjoyed this tutorial. It was very informative. Thank you sir!!!
The water might be the problem.
Same problem here. Nobody knows what cooks those plugs at the resistor block. Bad ground somewhere? Where? Third replacement here
Is the motor drawing to much.

You know, it's the original 04 blower motor. The darned plug fries every few years. The first time was just out of warrenty. Thos weekend will be the third one
@@RichpinTv
Indeed. It was recently replaced and runs fine since
Anyone have trouble getting the screw out on the drivers side. (left)? The right side screw came right out. Maybe a thin walled socket will work as there seems to be a small plastic flange up there covering part of the screw.
This is very helpful. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
thanks for the video.. when removing the clip, whoever owned the truck before me mustve broke the black and red release clips... anyway to get this out? @richpin06a
Great video very informative thanks a lot man i fixed mine right after your video mine was smelling like burnt plastic rite before it gave out
good video..my 2003 similar,,, tested the fan, and it was the usual resistor, which went out in a puff of smoke...Thank YOU
Thanks a bunch for the simple instructions and demonstration! Awesome
my motor works but keeps burning up the hot on the resistor connector
Thanks for your videos help me out a lot
Great info but I would add a warning about airbags yo disconnect and isolate from grounding the negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag capacitors to discharge to avoid airbag accidental deployment as per the dodge ship manual. Thanks
Bloah motah haha love that accent and thanks much. Video was a great help
motor still could be bad i have one now that draws to many amps and burns the resistors up and the wire harness a fire ready to happen
I really don't feel like doing this I'm just glad it's an easy fix
I had the repair first done at a gas station for about 350. Ever since I have done it myself. I guess a bad design by Chrysler. Same resistor and wiring plug has failed probably 5 or 6 times since. Blower motor always tests okay. Have to be a contortionist to reach and unscrew the resistor but otherwise a simple fix. Dorman sells both resistor and plug together. Don't just replace the resistor if the hot pin is burnt. Replace both resistor and plug at the same time or the resistor will fail within a month. Doesn't appear to be a moisture issue as the car is in Southern California.
Nice you saved me alot of wondering have the same issue we found fuses were all good and blower working but never thought of this being bad I'll be checking this tomorrow 🤙
Thank you
Awesome video. I will be trying this later today/tomorrow. My AC blower quit working all of a sudden this morning. :(
Same problem, same solution. Thank you
Hold on to your hat! Haha good job, im learning a lot from your videos thanks rich :)
I now know why they sell a kit with a new plug and leads for these.... that also go bad. What a crappy design. Great video.
