    I have severe spinal stenosis and it's such horrific pain 24/7. My whole spine is hell pain. I was diagnosed 3 years ago, and l am getting worse sadly. It's extremely debilitating and has turned my life upside down. I can't even sleep properly as the pain intensifies in bed and sitting or lying down. I used to be super fit and now l find it hard just to do daily living just in my home. It's a really scary serious medical condition.

      I'm so sorry to hear this! But it doesn't make sense to me. Stenosis is not painful in bed. You really need to see a doctor ASAP to find out what is going on.

      @@Leaptab I am close to your age. I was super fit my whole life and did weight training since l was 16 years old. Now l can't do which makes me so sad. I just found out also that l have a bulging disc in my upper spine. I see my Neurosurgeon again next week. I have been told that l need surgery for the sever spinal stenosis L4/5 in my spine (neck). I also have moderate foraminal spinal stenosis in my lower spine. It's freaking me out as l can't work and mentally it's difficult. I am an outpatient with the hospital. On lots of pain medications. Hope you are ok beautiful as it's not an easy thing to deal with.

    I have had spinal stenosis for many years. I had a recent MRI scan which showed the stenosis was very bad. It is so serious now that I am losing the strength in my legs, arms and fingers. I have had several bad falls and I struggle with day-to-day activities. I am waiting to see yet another specialist, however, at 76 years old my age is against me. Waiting for an appointment to see a specialist can take many months with the NHS. I do have bladder issues and I have a leakage problem.

      Not all surgeries are bad. I had severe lumbar stenosis at my L4-5 and it was pinching my spinal cord. I had fusion October 26 last year and my legs are no longer constantly going numb. Yeah, I still have it but it’s not all the time. No surgery is guaranteed to relieve your issues 100%, especially if you have degenerative disease of the entire spine. Having cervical stenosis isn’t fun either. Just take care of your body and realize we are not getting any younger, ladies and gentlemen

    THIS HELPS ME.... The only thing that I found that helps my spinal stenosis is hanging upside down for even a minute or 2 on an inverter table (Which I purchased for just $99 at walmart). It seems to help a little more to get on facing the table then facing away from the table. The first time I did it, I sort of didn't like it. But, since then I do it several times a day and look forward to it. It's only temporary relief... But, that little relief is so nice! The relief lasts longer if you aren't active right after. If I'm having a bad day of back pain and get on this for a little bit, my pain is reduced dramatically!

    I have stenosis, spondylolisthesis, spondylitis, well basically all the spondy ailments of L5 -S1. Have had it for over 20 years now. The last time I had a MRI I was at grade 2 and that was 9 years ago. I can't lay down to sleep, my hips, buttocks, legs, knees and feet are in constant pain. I know it's time for surgery, but I just don't want to be completely out of commission right now.

    • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand your concern. But when you can't sleep and you're experiencing neurogenic claudication due to grade two or higher spondylolisthesis, it can indeed leave you feeling like you are already incapacitated. In such cases, lumbar fusion surgery can be a viable option to regain your mobility and alleviate the discomfort. If you're keen on avoiding an extended downtime, the solution is a minimally invasive spinal fusion procedure.
      I would recommend seeking out a spine surgeon in your vicinity who specializes in minimally invasive surgery. With this approach, you could potentially return to light activities within a week or two, or at most, three weeks.

    I feel like I’m going crazy. I feel like my legs and hips are dying. This physical therapist just told me I have fibromyalgia and while I feel like I’m made of glass, I’m perfectly able bodied. My ct scan says narrow disc space l5-s1. Endplate osteophytes and sclerosis. Disc disease and bulges l5-s1, l4-5, l3 l2.
    Doesn’t this mean it’s more than fibromyalgia? I’m just going crazy being told it’s not really cause for concern. When I’m 32 and losing strength in my lower body and it’s growing up my spine. I am miserable and going crazy.

      Get a different opinion. You need a spine specialist. I’m going through something similar and trying to get answers. New ortho doc and a neurologist. I was diagnosed with severe stenosis and haven’t done anything about it in 3 years. Guess what, it’s getting worse. I had a fusion to correct scoliosis about 20 years ago. Frankly I don’t know what I’m going to do about it, because the prospect of an additional fusion surgery instills no faith in me, but I’m inching closer and closer to a wheelchair in my 30s.

      first responders are always the hardest to determine their physical readiness and fitness for duty, as the physical requirements of the job can be so crazy severe. I know for me, given the importance of a clear, mental state, and doing this vital work, if you wonder if your fit for duty, then you’re probably not. It would be better to find a non-physical way to finish your career, such as more of an administrative position. I have had really good experience with functional capacity evaluations. They do have norms for physical performance to compare for almost every job, certainly fireman.

      Whew! The MRI is such a relief. The findings really don’t describe anything that could be causing nerve damage, or the symptoms you’re reporting. That doesn’t mean you’re not feeling them. But it usually does mean it’s not coming from your neck. That’s good news.

    I was recently diagnosed with lumbar and cerebral spinal stenosis with 6 herniated discs. I’m very afraid to have surgery because I’ve heard nothing but bad stories and results. :( I was diagnosed last year and I’m almost to the point where it’s impossible to walk a mile. It puts me out for the rest of the day and getting up to use the bathroom after that is very stressful and difficult. Some days, I can’t get out of bed or walk at all. There has been times when I’ve lost my bowels in the middle of the night, or if I bend too far down or squat, I will lose my bladder and go on myself. It has become extremely debilitating and I don’t have a lot of support from ‘friends’ or ‘family.’ I feel so alone and this pain is unbearable. 😢

      You need surgery. You will only continue to worsen. I have spinal stenosis too and I occasionally have problems with sudden urge to urinate. I thought it was just a bladder issue now I'm very concerned it's caused by my stenosis. I've had small surgeries for sciatica that didn't work and ended up with a spinal fusion of L4 L5, L5 S1 in 2011 that worked. I remained pain free until 2019. I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis of L3 L4. My pain has worsened and I have that sudden urge to urinate causing me to run to the bathroom. I just had a lumbar epidural injection on the 15th of Nov. It began to help and I went a few days with much less pain but it's returning. I'm willing to have surgery. There's several non-invasive surgeries that potentially can be done, but it's different for each individual. I hope you seek out a qualified surgeon. Doing nothing is a guarantee you'll only get worse. Best wishes.

      It is miserable when you genuinely have excruciating pain all over your body and have embarrassing moments.
      I have trained my mind to control the bowel movement and urine control.
      I used to leak but i would go sit quietly in a comfortable position and just block everything out of your mind and you'll be amazed at how strong the mind is.
      I'm sixty two years old and have been suffering with spinal stanosus for about ten years and unfortunately in South Africa the public hospitals are useless and never got a bed for me (The Johannesburg Hospital).
      I would like to put myself out there incase an experimental drug for Spinal stanosus that other people don't have to go through what we are going through now.
      Your family think your just lazy, I've never been one to be lazy as I was used long hours of work and my work was physically challenging, a tradesmen and Trade Training Instructor and trained two(2) apprentices at a time whilst having to run my own machine and had to be available to repear the other machines in case of breakdowns,I was in charge of my shift and had forteen apprentices and never had an apprentice that I trained , they are all managers or directors now.
      My apologies for telling my working life history..
      Please talk to someone if you go into depression as try and change every negative into a positive.
      Let your mind be one with your body.
      I'd love DR. Caan from Johannesburg General Hospital to do the op for me as he is one of the best Nurolgists in South Africa and has a great success rate on spinal operations.

    I have tandem spinal stenosis involving 11 levels. I had surgery on three cervical levels in the 2000s. Now my lumbar has worsened significantly in just the last four years. I am 72. I got a 2nd opinion and that surgeon said I would need surgery on at least 8 more levels just to stabilize the spine, but I am no longer a candidate. He suggested a spinal stimulator but my pain management said no as I also have autonomic dysfunction and AFib. So I am semi functional on a combination of opiates and benzoes. But death will be my only relief as I have at least 18 nerve roots under moderate to severe entrapment, a ruptured disc at L3 - L4 with uncovered disc material floating in my cauda equina. My son and his family live in Phoenix and work for Intel, so maybe I will meet you sooner than later because the feet and legs are going and signs of incontinence are present. My current Neurosurgeon says he is done, my Nuerologist says I am a medical train wreck and the only thing they can offer is opiates and do no harm. It sucks. Now the cervical plate in my neck has created an esophageal stricture which is only 5 mm in diameter. That may kill me first...

    Left out a few things:
    1. I had slippage between vertebrate causing great pain. PT strengthened my core and solved the problem.
    2. I had bone spurs on the lamina. Surgery removed them and solved the problem.
    3. The orthopedic surgeon wanted to remove the lamina and fuse the vertebrae. The neurosurgeon just wanted to drill out the bone spurs. I chose the neurosurgeon and that solved the problem.

    Dr. - your sincerity in this video is greatly appreciated. May I ask please...my MRI report says I have severe right sided foraminal stenosis at L1-2. The surgeon I recently met with said, "It's not too bad," and scheduled me with a colleague in his practice for facet injections at the L1-2 and L4-5 where I had a hemilaminectomy 27 years ago. Now, an MRI I had 2.5 years ago showed no problem with L1-2. The current MRI report states that the disc is severely degenerated, there is severe right foraminal narrowing, modic changes in both vertebrae, endplate ebernation, large osteophyte complex, bilateral facet arthropathy, moderate thecal sac narrowing and right subarticular recess narrowing. The Dr. I met with said I'm not at risk for cauda equina syndrome. From the get go, before I met with him and had the MRI report in hand back in March, I was figuring a foraminotomy would be the way to go. I am concerned that there is some new paradigm at work in your field that might be putting me at risk. Please Dr. Lieberman...what say you? Thanks.

      Uh, yes! I'm frustrated just reading this. What is your doctor doing? (Although I do agree with the no medicine part. Narcotics are so dangerous!) It sounds like you have non-specific low back pain that could be radiculopathy, facet, or the waste basked "post laminectomy" pain. The next step is typically diagnostic medial branch block and epidurals to sort out the pain generator. You need a good pain management doctor. Do you have one? I recommend people who are double board certified and who do not use chronic narcotics.

    I was diagnosed with moderate facet arthropathy of the L5-S1, mild neuroforaminal stenosis and spinal stenosis, with disc desiccation and height loss. 10 years of complaining about this pain with so many unusual and fluctuating symptoms. I underwent many x-rays, and even a laparoscopy at 17 to determine the source and none was found. So I was sent off and told it was all in my head and given birth control for the pain which obviously did nothing. At 26 I stepped on a stool, ya a stool, and it caused my left foot to go numb along with portions of my pelvis and weakness and tingling in both my legs. I had to plead for an MRI, when my PCP wanted to send me to PT, now I am being sent to a spine surgeon and it has been 10 weeks, needless to say this has been shocking but it makes so much sense.

      I hear you. But spine surgery can indeed be very effective when it's the appropriate solution for the right patient with the right problem. It's a complex decision, often weighed carefully when other interventions haven't provided relief, especially in cases of severe pain or neurological deficits. While there are no guarantees and surgery isn't a perfect option, in many cases, it becomes the best available choice to improve a patient's quality of life.

I take 4 Gabapentin a day and 2 aspirins. I do use creams on my legs as needed. With doing all this my Stenosis is managed. I always am in a pain level of 2 or 3. That I can take, But I have to do the work. I still clean my home do the shopping and walk the dog, without stretching I would be in a wheel chair.

      Stretching and enhancing your range of motion is a fantastic approach, not only for spinal stenosis but for various other conditions too. Your proactive approach is commendable and will greatly benefit you as you age.
      May I share my concerns about your current treatment approach? I genuinely care about your well-being, and I'm not convinced about the care you're receiving. Spinal stenosis is progressive, and while managing symptoms is vital, it's equally crucial to monitor the underlying condition's progression. Regular MRI surveillance is essential to track the rate of deterioration.
      I have reservations about Gabapentin as a long-term solution for sciatica. It's a drug with significant side effects, impacting not just your physical health but also your cognitive and emotional well-being. If MRI confirms severe stenosis and you find it challenging to manage without Gabapentin daily, I strongly urge you to consider a Laminectomy surgery now. Waiting might only mean dealing with it in a less favorable state in the future. Your current age and health are factors to consider in making this decision.

    Im 39 years old. I just had an mri on my spine because an xray showed moderate to severe degeneration disc height loss and facet hypertrophy. The MRI was ordered by a rheumatologist to clinically correlate it with the xray and blood results I recently got showing high levels of inflammation (c protein) and rhematic factor but he really didn't explain the results of this MRI or he didn't know how to. I'm being referred to a neurosurgeon- ok great (waiting on that) But in the meantime I'm dealing with increasing symptoms as far as my ability to walk sometimes with extreme leg heaviness my ability to pee, lift my kids...sometimes episodes of vertigo at night but that jas only happened 3 times. Overall this seems to get progressively worse as the day goes on and sometimes causes sciatica pain. Anyway my results state a grade 3 spinal canal stenosis with complete effacement of csf and distortion, slight T2 hyperintense signal possibly due to myelomacia or edema, along with grade 2 stenosis is other parts as well.as neural forminal stenoses. What does this essentially mean? Will surgery most likely be involved? Am I working against a clock at all with this? This whole process started3 months ago with the inflamamtion symptoms wrecking my body but that since has been managed with a 6 day course of prenisdone. As far as my medical history- I have none really- relatively healthy, no accidents, surgeries or even a broken bone and reasonably active into sports. Any help or explanation is appreciated. Thanks

    Hi Doctor. Can spinal stenosis cause drop foot and muscle weakness, atrophy and twitching???

    • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Lana,
      Lumbar spinal stenosis typically causes claudication-pain that radiates down the leg when walking. As the stenosis worsens, it can affect individual nerve roots, leading to radiculopathy. While twitching isn’t usually a sign of radiculopathy, the rest of your symptoms definitely align with it. Twitching is more commonly linked to disorders originating closer to the brain. Neurologists refer to symptoms in the arms or legs caused by brain and spinal cord issues as "upper motor neuron" signs. When both upper and lower motor neuron signs are present, it could be indicative of a condition like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
      In short, you should consult with a doctor. It’s uncommon that the best path for back problems to start with a neurologist, but given the twitching, this may be one of those rare situations where it's appropriate.

    • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Decompression therapy can be a valuable treatment option, but not for stenosis or disc disease. Decompression therapy, often used in the form of traction, is typically most effective for conditions related to facet-mediated low back pain. These conditions are often characterized by arthritis visible on X-ray and swollen joints as seen on MRI scans.
      However, decompression therapy, such as traction, is not suitable for herniated discs or stenosis. These conditions have different underlying causes and mechanisms of pain, which require alternative treatments.
      For herniated discs, more targeted approaches like physical therapy, epidural steroid injections, or in some cases, surgical interventions, may be considered.
      Stenosis, on the other hand, is laminectomy surgery to decompress the spinal canal, leading to compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots.

      What is causing the stenosis? If it is a disc herniation, then that will slowly get better, and you can expect to get back to full function. Stenosis due to a narrowing of the spinal canal you were born with only gets worse as you age, and at 25 years old you have a lot of aging to do. • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Lack of range of motion of the thoracic spine due to DDD often leads to accelerated degeneration of the cervical spine. How old are you? Having both neck and thoracic DDD at a young age is a sign you have inherited lousy discs. (Did mom or dad have DDD?). People with weak discs need strong muscles to compensate. Consider investing in a core strengthening program for life, yoga or tai chi are the most popular.

    No pain meds this is not a country i grew up in, they helped you in the past; your loved ones were taken care of.
    Now all it is, is “injection mills”.
    Solid pain in spine low and high loosing my will to live anymore cause every day is so much pain and suffering.

    • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m so sorry you’re in so much pain, and that it’s become severe enough to make you question your will to live. I’m also concerned you mentioned needing care for your loved ones. Is someone else in your family struggling right now, too?
      Please remember, there are effective treatments for nearly all spinal conditions, with the exception of malignant tumors. Everyone deserves help when they’re sick or in pain, and I can tell from your comment that you’re truly in pain.
      The issue with certain medications is that they can sometimes make things worse. You mentioned "injection mills," which, for those unfamiliar, refers to places that perform injections just to run up bills without providing real relief. These injections don’t work, and you end up trapped in a cycle of returning for more injections or pain pills. It’s a terrible situation.
      My best advice is to visit BestPracticeHealth.com to find the right doctor. You need to start by identifying the root cause of your pain and understanding the best practices for treating it.
      Please hang in there and know that help is available. It's your job to find it.

    you are one of the worst people who spoke about this matter. i have stenosis on C4 to C7 and its more than severe. painful yes, i am unable to do many things, but when you say the only way to beat it is to die before it gets worse is such insensitive and you should not be a medical practitioner by any given chance. stenosis has multi-factor origin either discs or joints or ..., but most of it if not causing symptoms should not be touched. if its symptomatic, then you consider non surgical options and only go to surgery when all other options are exhausted.

      @samiam830 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BestPracticeHealth yes. My mom has degenerative disc disease, my grandma had osteoporosis and scoliosis, my dad died from Wagner’s disease, my grandfather’s on both sides died from heart attacks. I don’t think 70% of the men in my family live to be 65 probably poor diet and health and inherited health problems.
      I come back to this channel every now and then and watch this exact video, and it gives me comfort. I appreciate the work that you do and the advice that you give.
      I figured you do this for a living you would like to know a little background just for giggles .
      I go through phases where I will be extremely inflamed, and then it completely goes away without warning and I feel like a normal 20-year-old. But I can see that in my last comment I was feeling fine then, and now I guess I’m going through a bad phase , and my back is giving me extreme pain. And I’ve had to seek counseling for depression. So I’m not exactly sure what to do but I know one thing narcotics will not be the path for me. I could not imagine having back pain and battling narcotics.
      For my pain, I walk for a while, even though the walking hurts at that moment it helps my overall pain long-term. When I sit down or lay down or do the combination of both for too long on the couch and in my bed, I have sharp stabbing pains that run from my lower back down to my calf and into my foot And it hurts like hell.
      I have had some performance problems in the bedroom over my back pain. I don’t think it’s directly linked to it but it’s more of like a pain thing when my back hurts so bad it’s hard to stay in the mood and that gives me performance anxiety as well so it’s a double issue .
      I’ve had to quit my job and find easier work that is part time thank God I have a paid off property .
      I have no medical insurance and not a lot of free up cash. So I tried to keep things medicinal, like eating a proper diet walking, drinking plenty of water, and trying to sleep the best that I can with my legs propped up and my back flat on a firm surface .
      I take Aleve twice a day. And I try to stay away from sugar, I am 300 pounds so I need to lose 120 pounds which I’m battling that because it’s hard staying active for a proper workout I love to binge eat on sugars and sweets , so I’ll go through a phase where I start to lose weight and then I guess my body craves the sugar so bad makes me give in mentally and I indulge. I’ve noticed after these phases. My pain is a lot higher, which makes me not want to exercise which makes a domino effect which goes full circle into, being depressed and back into an unhealthy bedroom life.
      The reason why I’ve gone a great detail is because if I decided to let my depression win these last two months, I would not be on this earth to spread my story, to possibly help someone out with their journey. Thank you for all you do, glad to see that you read everything I had to say .
