      Great planes all. I also love the look of the F4U - The Corsair. British pilots took it and taught the US how to make effective carrier landings. The cant of the high nose caused by the large propeller sweep caused issues for US pilots at first but we learned from our British cousins how to make a safe sweeping carrier approach instead of just straight in.

      @@Optikification You utter lying moron. Why peddle Remainer crap on a Thread that is about a WWII fighter?
      1. We, unlike the rest of Europe which is happy to re-write history, NEVER EVER forget what the Polish airmen did in 1940. Just like we never forget what Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, South African and Caribbean airmen did with us. Indeed they are commemorated in various memorials around the country and every year at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday.
      2. To say they "had the most kills in the Battle of Britain" is an insult to every other pilot engaged in that combat and all the rest. Every damn one was a hero....
      3. And now let me lay your lie for what it is. We in the UK voted to leave the political ponzie scheme that is the EU. We never voted for, nor have we ever said we would, 'kick' anyone out. Indeed I would remind you it was the EU that stuck to NOT agreeing to make both EU and UK citizens future's safe and used them as political chess pieces. The UK has never said anything other than migrants here are welcome to stay regardless of where they come from. Unlike the EU on British migrants in the EU
      Remainers make me bloody puke with their lies and false information just because they lost the vote.

    Born in England and living in Canada for about 40 years I remember on remembrance day each year as a kid in the 70's watching Spitfires, Lancaster and Hurricanes doing formation fly overs on the different bases where my dad was stationed in the RAF as well as actual war vets coming into the school's to raise money with the poppy drives. It always brought a sense of pride seeing the planes that saved Britain during the darkest days and the vets who many wore the visible battle scars of war and were cheered as true heroes to look up to not the manufactured heroes today. Having read some of the comments below my personal belief is that if Hitler had not attacked Russia and lost over a million battle hardened troops and equipment things might be very different today. Actually if Hitler listened to his Generals the world would be very different but that is what makes history. Germany had a peace treaty with Russia and got oil, steel and other goods from them until Germany launched operation Barbarossa where they sent over 3 million personnel from the Axis which I believe even today was the biggest invasion force ever assembled. As much money as countries spend today on there militaries WW2 was the last war where an empire or major country could be dethroned and parceled out because today major countries don't directly fight they use proxies who they supply which feeds the war machine and its industries.

    The Mark 18 is a "beaste" worthy of the admiration of Spitfire fans-- with rakish good lines, exuding power and speed. Of course, it is also orders of magnitude evolved beyond the Mark 1, and its engine is only part of that breathtakingly dramatic evolution. For years, the Spitfire legend had suggested the Mark 18 to every imagination, but had delivered only the Mark 1, and its gradually improving increments. Despite the fame granted the Merlin, it was not until the Griffon series that the Spitfire's modest Merlin "snarl' was replaced by the Griffon's stunning symphony of supercharger whistle and engine roar.

    • @robertnicholson7733
      @robertnicholson7733 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I wouldn't call the Merlin's sound sweet. It had a very distinctive exhaust note courtesy of an unusual firing order which caused early issues with the engine. I love the lazy ragged roll it gets from the rear, most classically during flybys.
      The Griffon has a more normal firing order and to me sounds much like all the other V12 aircraft engines in the sky. After the war, the Shackletons were Griffin powered and the crews weren't so happy about it and described it as emitting a really annoying high pitched whine ( 4 engined piston aircraft, hard to synchronize all the engines so you are going to get beating but the whine was a whole other thing) unlike the Merlin powered Lincolns and Lancasters. Trouble is, I read about the whine a while ago and now can't remember where, so I can't confirm my unreliable memory.

    For me the Spitfire is the most beautiful aircraft ever to take flight. I must admit though as good as this sounds, the Merlin is better. I'm lucky enough to be under one of the regular flight paths for the BBMF and get to hear them on a regular basis. Even after hearing them so many times I still get goosebumps when they fly over.

    Beautiful airplane.. and without it and the incredibly bravery of the British and the other nationality airmen that flew in them holding off the German luftwaffe, it's extremely unlikely that D-Day could have ever taking place. If Britain had fallen at that time mounting any kind of invasion into Europe would have been virtually impossible or at least cost an unbelievably larger amount of lives.
    I live in the states and I'm a proud American and I love the p51 and all of the other aircraft that participated. But The spitfire holds a very special place in aviation history and world history.

    • @BatMan-oe2gh
      @BatMan-oe2gh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great comment, and correct, if Britain did fall, the landing in Europe could not have happened. The Allies would have had to go through Italy and then France to get to Germany. And trying to get from Italy to France would have been very difficult due to how narrow it is and how easy the Germans could have defended it. And also, England would not have built the bombers to attack Germany, and the USA would have had to launch their bombers from Africa. Germany could have kept producing large amounts of equipment for much longer.

      It's unlikely britain would have been completely out of the picture had we lost air superiority, an amphibious invasion of britain would have been suicidal by the germans, even with air superiority, they still had the royal navy to contend with.

    • @davidelliott5843
      @davidelliott5843 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hitler could just have easily carried on moving East and ignored Chamberlain's declaration of war. Had he done that, Stalin would have been pushed back beyond the Caucasus and Germany would have captured all the oil and grain it could ever need. Quite how France and UK would have dealt with that is anyone's guess.

    • @chriscarter5720
      @chriscarter5720 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephencrompton4352 Possibly, but if you read about the losses of RN ships (and not small ships but destroyers, cruisers and aircraft carriers) during the battles in the Mediterranean, particularly during the evacuations in the Eastern Med, it seems clear (to me at least) that given air superiority, the Germans could have saturated the RN with bombers, isolated the Straits of Dover with air laid minefields and captured Dover and Ramsgate with paratroops. Then getting large numbers of troops across the Channel would have been relatively easy. The argument that Hitler wasn't serious about an invasion may be true, but the German High Command appeared to think he was serious otherwise why did they spend so much time and effort drawing up plans? If we had surrendered, would the Germans simply have left us alone to rearm and reform; a potential threat in their rear? No, we would have been occupied, anyone in a position of power executed, most or all of the armed forces imprisoned and the UK turned into a Nazi client state. There would have been no second front, the Germans would have walked into the middle east with its unlimited supplies of oil for fuel and plastics. How long then before nuclear armed V2s were dropping on New York, Washington, the eastern seaboard. And how long then before the pacifist elements in the US were demanding a negotiated peace? And on it would have gone with the Western German Reich and the Japanese Co-prosperity Sphere joining hands through Iran, Pakistan and India, Russia surrounded and nuked in Phase 3 of the world conquest.
      You can argue against this and say it's a fantasy, which, of course, it is because it didn't happen. Why didn't it happen? Because the RAF (in the broadest sense, with all the brave men who came from all across the world to put on the blue uniform) stopped the Luftwaffe from achieving air superiority. Everything else followed from that victory; whether you like it or not.
