God Bless You Sir....a labor of love. I heard one in a Mustang flying over Savannah, GA when the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum was under construction. My Lord, nothing prettier than hearing the whistle of the wings and that engine. There is a reason Rolls called this engine a Merlin. My Dad saw Mustangs fighting 109s in Europe. He also saw a 'stang try to jump an ME262.....Dad said the German saw the 'stang, "poured the coals to it" (his words) and left him like he has standing still.
That's a man who loves his Merlin. And who could blame him. My God. 27 liters, 1600 horsepower. That's 3x the horsepower my car makes at full tilt. What an exquisite piece of engineering. Just beautifully designed & expertly built. ~430mph in the P-51. We really could do great things when our countries worked together towards a common goal. American industrial might and British craftsmanship. Nice one man. It's the engine, the time and the provenance. That is why I got into British bikes in the early 70's. I've rebuilt BSA 250's up to pre unit BSA 650's with a few Triumphs etc. In between. I've never been interested in foreign bikes and never had one . She was built to run and I hope the front room idea got vetoed by 'the boss's. You talk my language and I love watching your shows. You tell it how it is , a very rare thing indeed these days. My old man volunteered for bomber command in 1940 but ended up in S.O.E. All I can say is 'Nice one, thankyou '.

Watching videos of Guy and he just seems like the definition of likeable, affable, all rounder, cool, chill, funny, humble, everyday man, man's man, kinda guy.
Unquestionably, without hesitation and inarguably...the greatest engine sound ever when let out of the gate to make full song! Just amazing. Nothing else even close.
Myriad Mosquito was not one of the faster aircraft of WWII !!!! Most marks could not hit 400 MPH only a couple of the late model marks hit 415 MPH !!! Several American fighters were all faster !!!!
This is the motor that saved Britain and was put into the American P51!!! Spitfire and the P51 along with a Sherman tank......remarkable machines and the Brave Men that had "a set" on them!!!-
The Merlin was also fitted to the Hispano HA-112 which was a license built Messerschmitt Bf109. A bit ironic a fantastic British engine that helped smash the Luftwaffe was fitted to a German WWII Luftwaffe aircraft design 😳

Don't really know why but I just got all teary watching that. The sound of that magnificent engine, Guy's obvious pride in it, imagining the emotion he was feeling, imagining that very engine powering a plane up and away on a mission. Superb. Just bloody superb. ❤
"what's beyond amazing!?!? ...incredibl....absolutely incredible!"
I really like how Guy how stayed true to himself and does what he loves, he is incredibly talented and his appeal is his absolute humility
My favourite Guy! Cheers from a guy who worked 8 years with engines in the Rolls-Royce company
What a lincolnshire legend ....
inspirational in many ways ..
Work for what you appreciate..
Whilst we are here make the most of it.
I don't have a need in my life (yet) to own a Merlin but I do love stories of people working for, and then attaining their dreams, either in part or in whole. This video makes me happy.
Easily one of the best "hair/mutton chops" combos that I know of!
One of?!
@@ItsMonkeyNews my mistake. Easily THE BEST.
He's like British wolverine
I wonder what size helmet does he wear, i guess 2 sizes bigger than his head to be able to fit all that hair.
He’s like a more interesting and less cringey Newt Scamander, plus that Merlin is most certainly a Fantastic Beast.
Never get tired of hearing how the thing took off in the shop..... Just seems so... 'Guy' :-)
My polish grandad had 4 of these on his Lancaster in the war
As the Brits say, "He's a bit chuffed!" What a beautiful sound, the Hurri was my favourite...
"I'm a bit nervous, last time it did take off"
Does he still get insurance at all?
He isn't American
I bet the insurance claim looked interesting.... 😃
@@unbidzolo
There's literally only 1 kind of insurance that isn't universal in the US that is in the other developed countries. Still needs life and property insurance
@@rouge5140 You don't need life or property insurance. Its probably sensible to have it, but you don't need it.
Good morning Guy, thank you for sharing your Merlin with us 😬.
I'm a 70 years young man and the sound of a Spitfire still gives me goose bumps still!
As a motorcycle man myself and still riding bikes and now gone back to a bike I started with, a 1970 T100R Triumph, so appreciate a good riders.
I have watch all you filmed doco's, but was sad that you didn't go back to the Triumph Rocket Land Speed recod attempt😟.
So, please keep up the good work, you're an inspiration; THANK YOU.
"I still get goosebumps." - Quite a statement from a guy who can ride a motorcycle through town at 200 m.p.h.
Point well taken.
One of the most iconic sounds you can ever hear in England.
Everyone knows the sound of a Merlin.
Beautiful.
I live near Eastbourne and they fly over my house a couple of times a day....from Biggin Hill I believe taken people up for the Spitfire experience.....fly over Beach Head, do a barrel role and then back to Biggin......about 5 grand a time I have been told so have started saving up......what an experience......what a beautiful machine
If I’ve watched this video once I’ve watched it 40-50 times 😂 I just love the bit were he’s describing when it took off.
Half the Wall
Half the stairs
And cut my training bike in half 😂😂😂 I’m even laughing writing this 😂😂
I could listen to this man all day long👍🏼
I concur mate
Guy Martin is a bloody diamond geezer!!! you can see the "fire" in his eyes when he speaks!! A true human, driven, passionate, serious, capable, ingenious, hands-on.
Totally agree with Guy. It's a thing of beauty, science and engineering. Bloody lovely.
4p
Nice one man.
It's the engine, the time and the provenance.
That is why I got into British bikes in the early 70's.
I've rebuilt BSA 250's up to pre unit BSA 650's with a few Triumphs etc. In between.
I've never been interested in foreign bikes and never had one .
She was built to run and I hope the front room idea got vetoed by 'the boss's.
You talk my language and I love watching your shows.
You tell it how it is , a very rare thing indeed these days.
My old man volunteered for bomber command in 1940 but ended up in S.O.E.
All I can say is
'Nice one, thankyou '.
Lol a gallon a minute my god I can only imagine that combustion, to hear and feel that up close must be indescribable 😍🤯
Imagine those pilots flying spitfires, pushing the engine to the absolute limit and beyond
I stood next to a Spitfire a few years back with its Merlin engine running...I ve never heard a sound like it in my life time.
For me its the sound, as soon as i hear the engine im lookin for the spitfire in the sky =)
Guy Martin seems to be one of the most down to earth and real person I have seen on the tube. He is full of enthusiasm for all things "petrol". Knowing what he does for a living, this is all the more extraordinary. Love this guy.
Is it engineering, or is it Art?, it certainly produces an emotional response seeing the amazing engine that helped the UK win the WW.
I believe it was the USA that helped the UK,...to not LOSE the WW.
@@dang2443 Although you were 3 years late 🤣
@@captainaverage721 No, cupcake, I believe we arrived exactly right on time. Or should I say, JUST in time!
For a colonial, that was actually quite amusing
@@captainaverage721 For a Brit you were predictably condescending
A gallon a minute, just Ticking over. Fantastic. Worth every penny. 👏👏👏
“I hold me hands up, it were my fault”
you have to love Guy, you can see the genuine excitement on his face while asking the crew if they're exited.... Such an honest and down to earth fella, he seems like he is everyone's mate 😁
Nice to see some one who can afford a Rolls Royal Merlin get so much pleasure from owning and running it No just storing it up as a conversation piece
4:54 " Cos at the time that's probably the most scared I have ever been" LMFAO........
I can't even begin to imagine the scene as it took off. I had the pleasure of working on a Merlin in my younger days when I worked as a Graduate at RR Leavesden. Beautiful, just beautiful........
That's one hell of a substitute for an air-conditioner, but a lot more exciting!
in the living room, I can just picture it..... Mrs. Martin; "Eyup, Guy, I can't get this fire to draw properly...." - Mr. Martin; "Never mind, luv, I'll fire up the Merlin.... That should give it enough draft!..."
Watching videos of Guy and he just seems like the definition of likeable, affable, all rounder, cool, chill, funny, humble, everyday man, man's man, kinda guy.
If everyone on this planet was like our guy then we would live in an amazing place but unfortunately men like this are pretty rare.
This lad needs to be on tv every week he's so enthusiastic and passionate about everything he's involved with and is so grounded and humble👍
An amazing piece of well loved equipment with incredible history, nice one Guy
He can't hide his passion in what ever he does his a classic 🏍
Is it just me or is Wolverine copying Guy's look.
wolverine is the lil sister of guy
@@laffytaffy1417 spot on :-)
@@ToyotatechDK thanks mate greetings from germany

I can’t think of a more perfectly matched pair. Martin and Merlin
Your passion shines through. Keep doing what you're doing, and keep sharing 😘
Thank you for all the joy ✌️
Bolt it to the floor. That’s one kick ass air con. I could see him bolting it in front of a window for a hot day.
Imagine the cash he could Make by people paying him to use it as a massive air con
Love Guy's enthusiasm for the best sounding piston engine ever built...
Bet it smells amazing too!!! 🤘😎🤘
Unquestionably, without hesitation and inarguably...the greatest engine sound ever when let out of the gate to make full song! Just amazing. Nothing else even close.
Q. Define Passion?
A. GUY MARTIN!!
A truly glorious engine. Nothing better in any space than a Merlin. Top's right there. Hearing those start up never gets old.
"I'm just about seeing the funny side" 😂😂😂
A merlin engine and Guy Martin, 2 of my most favourite things ever
‘The most scared I’ve ever been’.
From a man who rides the TT at 200mph!
Imagine Guy Martin in a plane. Food for thought.
He forgot to mention the merlin(x2) was also fitted to the de Havilland Mosquito one of the fastest (and finest) aircraft of the war
I was waiting to hear the mosquito come up!
Or the 8 in the post war Bristol brabazon passenger plane.
Yep. Was thinking of the mozzy, too.
@@jasonirwin4631 8 x Bristol Centaurus
Myriad Mosquito was not one of the faster aircraft of WWII !!!! Most marks could not hit 400 MPH only a couple of the late model marks hit 415 MPH !!! Several American fighters were all faster !!!!
The pure enjoyment and happiness this engine brings to this man is captivating and truly pure. I got excited just seeing his excitement. Loved it
'I'll go get the papers.....get the papers'. Guy 'Two Times' Martin
Anyone with a merlin as a toy is #1 in my book
"Got any perol?" Haha love guy martin 😂
This is the motor that saved Britain and was put into the American P51!!!
Spitfire and the P51 along with a Sherman tank......remarkable machines and the Brave Men that
had "a set" on them!!!-
The Merlin was also fitted to the Hispano HA-112 which was a license built Messerschmitt Bf109. A bit ironic a fantastic British engine that helped smash the Luftwaffe was fitted to a German WWII Luftwaffe aircraft design 😳
The fact that there are production roadcars that make almost as much power as this is incredible
Not with same torque
