    Not pathetic at all given that this was 1994 before Michael became arguably the best driver in the world. Wise words from Ron i feel. Especially as he is one of the main guys. Being a driver is one thing but Ron can win you races, hire you, fire you, put the best team around you. A man worth listening to.

    I sort of understand what Ron means. Watching Michael drive from the onboards in 1993 was almost gut wrenchingly on the limit (over sometimes). His car control (back in 1993 when the cars allowed you to drive like that) was up there with the very best.

    • @Jejking
      @Jejking ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It stayed there way wayyy longer than 1993. I mean, look at him banzaiing the cars all over in 1996-98. From 2000-2002 he became more calculated and calm but still in full control.

    • @weallfollowmanutd
      @weallfollowmanutd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jejking Of course. I'm taking the example from 1993. Michael done ridiculous things all the way into the late 90s, before the pitch sensitivity of the cars were drastically improved and you then had cars that were so good, there were a few tenths extra the best drivers could pull from a car. 2002 - 2004 wasn't so much Michael being so calculated, but the cars being so much easier to drive and therefore his team mates got closer.

    Schumacher has said in his biography that in 1995 McLaren said to him that money is not a problem, what ever salary Schumacher wanted McLaren would give him, Schumacher still chose to go to Ferrari, a struggling team at the time, Schumacher said he wanted to develop a team with himself,
    Personally i can't believe that he went with Ferrari and if it was me in his shoes i probably would have gone with whoever had the best car and most money.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The salary might have been lower at Ferrari but they more than made the difference up [and more] because Ferrari allowed Schumacher to sell personal sponsorship on his car/overall's which McLaren wouldn't do.

  • @ciaranwalsh96
    @ciaranwalsh96 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Funny thing is Mick has become McLaren's reserve driver, so Ron got his wish of Schumacher at McLaren!
    Interesting thing is that this was pre-Senna's death, and it's well known Senna wanted to go to Ferrari after his spell with Williams. Quite likely in alternate universe in which Senna lives that Michael ends up at McLaren. Would have been one hell of a German super team with Michael and Mercedes, as well Newey designing the car and Mika as teammate. Could have ended up just as dominant as Ferrari did.

    Pretty sure that Ron (and others- Nigel Mansell being another to vocally speak about Schumacher being easy to spot as the next super talent) had seen Schumacher in the rubbish 1992/93 Benneton and doing stuff that was impressive, and needed a new driver because he knew Senna was looking for the Williams drive. This was common and still goes on today, and it is logical as teams need to have their driver lineups planned.
    Sadly however, I believe his high opinion of Schumacher potentially changed in 1994 because in the Senna tribute week on SkyF1 this year, in a very emotional interview he spoke about he and Ayrton sharing the same belief that the 1994 Benneton was a 100% illegal car (in that they could see and hear traction control in the way the car handled).
    It would be interesting to know if Ron ever approached Schumacher again after that.

      +LM This is not some secret behind the curtain gameplay. In top sport, may it be Football or F1, this goes on all the time. Just like in Football or Icehockey, sometimes they are looking for a particular profile to fit the team and also perhaps the first driver. The second driver must accept that he will not get as much attention and so on, so it's probably very important to the team to scout a lot. The difference in dynamics between Prost-Senna and Berger-Senna shows this very clearly. Although, alot of that BS was media.

    The secret of Senna was leaving at the last minute of classification, with more rubber and the track hotter than the rest, and that was the reason he had so many poles. Now everybody aims to be at the last minute on track but in the 80´s and still in the early 90´s people did not aim that so eagerly.
    Example, Silverstone´93, Schumacher and Prost in the last minute, and Senna was beated, simply as that.
    Then, in races, Senna could not be as fast, as in qualification, simply as that.

    • @mehdi017
      @mehdi017 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Lmfao ! so stupid to reduce Ayrton's performance to the grip on a track. What made his legend is the combination of genius in all way of driving a car and pushing it to the limits. The most appropriate answer to your comment is the first lap of donington 1993. Watch it then come back to find us the best reason to one of the most impressive lap ever.

    • @azynkron

      +hunt2727 The 1993 Mclaren was rubbish. They had a second rate Ford engine that had between 50-70 bhp less than the other top teams. Midway through the season the managed to mitigate it somewhat but it was still vastly inferior to the Williams and others. Still, when the weather got bad and the driving skills mattered more, Senna still won. Remember, even when rain was pouring down, the Williams was still a better car than the Mclaren.

    • @JezebelBoy88
      @JezebelBoy88 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well i'm glad that little chat didn't eventuate into anything else, Schumacher wouldn't have won any races if he went to McLaren anyway! Ron Dennis wouldn't have let him cheat!!

    And you are saying Senna could not match Schumahcer lap after lap? I think you will find driving a qualifying lap after lap wrecks the tyres and under the current regulations doing that is stupid. I think you don't know much about the career of Senna if you believe he could only be fast on one qualifying lap.

    Yeah, I'm not to keen on Micheal either, but he was a good driver..Just not as good as Ayrton Senna that;s all.

    Dennis is a snake, he's dragging this sport down. He's been honored with a CBE and yesturday said he was "Ashamed to be British" because of the lack of support in growing sports and industry there. Coming from a guy who moved his whole operation to Germany.

    This was August 1993. At that time of this interview, Schumacher was a bum. He had only won 1 race in 31 GP's from 91 to Aug 93. (A lucky race at spa 1992 that Mansell would have easily won without his engine problems)
    Dennis was right what he said.
