It depends what you want to do with a shovel. If you want to dig into solid dirt and bury a 5 gallon bucket cache to come back to later, might not want to use a shovel that has screw joints or hinges. The rivets will start coming undone, the screw handle will keep slipping and needing retightened. I'd always go with the Cold Steel. It can be modified / change the color stain on the wood. The nylon sheath can allow it to be carried on your belt or dangling from the outside of the backpack... and it does actually fit into every single backpack I have as it's only 22 inches long including the sheath. The metal shovel head is very thick and solid...not very concave shaped like other shovels...check out other videos on it how it can be thrown like a hatchet. You can cut down saplings or vines or roots quite easily with it. But if all you want to do is bury your poo, then feel free to pick any of the other shovels.

What's your thoughts and/ or experience with a Vietnam era us e-tool? Got one from a flea market in excellent condition for its age, it has a pick and shovel combo while having a wood handle. Marked at 1966

Yeah, let's say you keep it in your car trunk...I always put a can of WD-40 in my trunk because the idea your jack is going to just work without some lube is dubious.
I'd worry about a non simple shovel, a folding entrenching tool, too and I think the Soviet style Cold Steel shovel makes a lot of sense.
I've had a G.I. entrenching tool get locked up when I needed it.
Every fancy hinge is a potential failure point.
In my car trunk I have the WD-40 and Channel lock pliers, camping I don't, well I might have tiny pliers to move hot pots and or a Leatherman but that's not the same...

The type of entrenching tool with one joint and a wood handle I trust more than newer designs...but I think the Soviet style ones with no hinge like Cold Steel's is probably best.

Not sure that’s a USGI shovel you have there. Many of the Amazon reviewers stated it was a clone from the link you provided. I don’t know how many manufacturers made the entrenching tool for the US Military, but it is my understanding the ones manufactured by Ames are of superior quality. The side of the handle should say Ames, US and a 2 digit year. 👍

Ames was the only producer of the M1941, M1951 and M1967 E-Tools. The M1967 tri-folds are only AMES. The newer ones are the Gerber reviewed earlier.

I've got the SOG and it fits perfect under the seat of my truck, like the fact that it has a pick axe and a saw and I created an edge on the opposite side of the saw to be able to use it like an axe/machete as well. Also came with a sheath with a belt loop.

Did you get the US GI from a military surplus or is it just the generic GI style E-etool?
Why because real issued E-tools are great.

Going to have to call BS on the USGI issue being at the bottom of the list. I've owned one for years , , , bought it new un-issued (in fact just bought another one to keep in my truck). Never had a single problem with it. Nothing shown in the "use" video of it matches what I've experienced with this tool.

Were there any markings on your USGI tool? The link you posted on your description has some reviews from people claiming they received knockoffs.

Hi there! No, we did not. That'd give a certain brand an edge over the others. What we wanted to do was test them without any bias. :)

How disappointing that after thousands of years and millions of dollars humans can't design a shovel that measures above "meh".

how trustworthy will a review be, when the tools aren't used properly? with the shorthanded folding shovel you'll kneel down whilst digging. otherwise you'll experience backpain....
