That happens from dissimilar metals being exposed to the elements and seizing together. There's certain types of greases you can use to prevent it from happening again. This is pretty common with barrel nuts on AR15's where the receiver is aluminum and the barrel nuts are often steel. Aeroshell is a great grease to use for this but rarely is found at normal auto parts stores. I had to order online.

Lubricate the threads and moving parts. Mine opens nice and smooth.
If you can find it, I recommend Kroil penetration fluid. I'm a civilian pipefitter for the Navy. That stuff works wonders on rusty bolts connecting steam pipe that are on the piers.

Thanks for this video, I have one of these that also got seized up from sand and/or rust, I couldn't budge the screw for years until I found this video and the heat did the trick. Its such a great tool I am glad I can get back to using it soon.

I just bought one of these off ebay. It say “Ames 80” on the side. I’m assuming that’s the year it was made? It even came with an issue pouch. I can’t wait to bring this thing camping. It really does seem to be bomb proof, and I’m sure it will come in very handy. Thanks for the vid. I took mine apart, cleaned it, and greased it up and now it feels great.
Open them up and apply anti-seize to the threads, never another issue. I have several and I also wipe them down with silicone spray occasionally, the whole tool. Just like any tool or firearm, clean and lube regularly and they’ll last a lifetime.

Well, that pretty much answered a question I had. I'm currently shopping for a Tri-fold military style shovel, and came across AMES and wanted to compare it to others. A little work and yours is right back to the same working condition it was 20 plus years ago. That says a lot...
I’ve been wanting to get and replacement Ames E-Tool ever since I was discharged from the Army. I’ve used the Walmart Ozark Trails version for a couple of years now. It’s not perfect but it’s pretty close. Last week I was in an Army Navy store and they had a Fox Outdoors version of the Ames for about $35 so I grabbed it, and wouldn’t you know it on the way home I stopped into a Thrift store not even 45 minutes later, and they had an Ames in very good condition with the ALICE carrying pouch for $10. I couldn’t pass it up. Especially since I’ve been seeing them going on eBay for $50+ in the same condition. Now that I have it to compare against the other two I can say if all you’re looking for is an E-Tool and don’t care what brand then the Walmart one will get the job done as long as you’re not expecting to use the “saw teeth”, and for $10 it’s a good bargain. The only problem I have with it is in “pick axe” configuration the shovel head points back a good . For digging this doesn’t matter a whole lot but using it as an improvised seat isn’t possible. The Fox Outdoors brand is almost exactly identical to the Ames. I have had a chance to put it through it’s paces yet so I don’t know about durability. Interestingly enough in pick axe configuration the shovel is more level than the Ames, but only by a little.
I got lucky and found a 1994 German on in an antique store with only rust for $10, no problem like yours only thing was it was missing the cover.
The ammo can was for a M-60 machine gun (the old HOG) linked belts of 7.62mm NATO rounds. So it was a .30 caliber ammo can, not a .60 cal nor a .50 cal.

They were a pain in the butt, when you had to pack most of your field gear and lug it around, but still great field tool, I need a gardening tool to cut thru roots, and thought of my old E-Tool, so I went to a military surplus store and bought one very first tools I couldn't wait to turn in to supply when my enlistment was up, best investment for yard maintenance.

Very useful tool. But I fear not with any sort of grease. The tool was originally designed with dry threads and dry fits for a reason. It is a “shovel”… used for digging through dirt. Dirt and grease… Uhmm.. don’t play nice together. If anything, I would use a dry graphite. Obviously can be used as a bit of a hatchet, again chopping into wood, fibers, creating dust, it can be used as a paddle and water…
Yeah. I don’t recommend grease for anyone browsing videos for restoration tips.

I put a good amount of Lucas heavy duty gun oil on the threads for this reason. Anti-Sieze is another great option. Don't run this tool dry

I have the cheap Chinese knock off version of that that someone gave me. I need to check the locking ring and see if I can lubricate it some way.
They are handy little shovels I think.
On my knockoff version completely unbranded, the locking lug seems to be too loose, and the shovel is attached via a rivet instead of a bolt
I just put WD-40 to a 82 one and came off very easily, the ring become off also and i dont know if this has to be joined to the bolt (forgive my english man i just speak spanish) nice video 👍🏼

I have the opposite problem, mine comes loose a a lot and wants to fold on it's own.😢
The ring peice came off the twist lock on mine and where the bolt goes through the t handel is cracked had two ames and same problem has anyone else had that problem

True but I didn't have anything like that laying around at the time so I used what I had.
The real question is why. It was a piece a junk when I carried it in the Marine Corps in the 80's & it has not gotten any better through the years.
They're really not junk though. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers and marines have dug many man holes, shitting holes, and filled many sand bags with these. If you want full sized shovel characteristics out of something you can fit on the outside of your ruck, you're being unrealistic. They're perfectly fine at doing what they're designed to do, and is why we were still using them even when I got out in 2016.

Have the same e tools in both vehicles. I find that the best AND worst feature is the handle itself. Great to have the D handle but sometimes I dislike the extra heft. But dammit, using it as a hoe/pick is better with 2 hands.

My World War II German shovel is broken like this
