  • If you have followed my channel for long you know we love our Silkie chickens! They are fluffy and sweet. Lately we've had quite a few broody hens so we are letting them hatch a few chicks. It's always fun when you go to bed with the anticipation of a new chick the next morning. Lifting up the mama hen to see a new baby chick is so sweet. I get so excited to see what color they are going to be :) Thanks for hangin' out with me here on the Daddykirbs Farm.

    I loved having chickens so much as a kid! The first ones I was able to get were little chicks, just old enough to leave mom. I'd go out every day and find them bugs and all sorts of little treats. They'd run up to me and I'd sit down and talk to them. One might hop on my knee looking for some more yum-yums. It was awesome.
    (Sad ending to those chickens though. They randomly got sick and died from something weird. No idea what it was. It was so sad!)

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry to hear of the sad ending. There are several diseases that can take a flock in a hurry. However, I am very happy that you got to experience having chicks :) Thanks for sharing.

      @daddykirbs  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know.. I was kind of embarrassed to leave that in the video because we've tried so hard in the past to protect the chicks by keeping them in a brooder without a mama hen. I still think that way is ok, but we have noticed that the chicks grow up more aware and adapted when we leave then in the yard with the mama. One of the turning points for us was when our favorite hen died. After that all the chickens looked like chickens instead of pets. *We still love them very much* but now are more willing to let them be what they are... chickens :)

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BellaButton everyone has their own favorites! Many people like pure white Silkies because they represent "pure" Silkies. I like the softer lavender color. We've only had a couple of those. Some are a mix of colors like the one right now we call Dot. My wife really loves her. Here is a link to her on my instagram feed. instagram.com/p/BC_a344FNUN/?taken-by=daddykirbs

    IH I was wondering I got some silky chicks and was wondering how long they need to be under a heat lamp and also if they go broody and have silky eggs under them if I were to replace them with my Rhode Island red chickens eggs if they will still sit on them and hatch them out and raise them?

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Keith Kratzer Baby chicks need to be under a heat source until fully feathered. This could be 4 or 5 weeks or so. Once they have feathers and the temps are around 70 or above... you will be ok to turn the heat source off. Yes, your Silky will gladly sit on eggs that aren't hers ;)

    Hello Dear Can you tell me about more of the Silkies hens.I get one the owner tell me she is 2 tears old. But she look older Faces and toes too.Plus he say she lay eggs. With all the stress to move from her coop to a quite house.. How long take she start again lay egg do you know.. Oh I need to put her outside and make small coop for her.. What do you think.. I like her like a pet but if she lay egg will be better , The Owner no giving me to much answers ..God Bless ; I hope soo see you answer me ..

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Older hens will slow down egg production, or even stop altogether. Maybe she's older than 2 years? Give her time outdoors on grass and in the sunshine. Give her also a comfortable clean nest box. I can't say for sure what will work, but it would be nice for her to have those things to be happy with her life. Thanks for loving her.
