- On our home farm our chickens are laying eggs. The Silkie chicken is one of our farm chicken breeds. This was our first experience with letting a broody hen lay on eggs. Up to this point we have purchased all of our chickens. Some of them were purchased locally and others were purchased from an online hatchery. Hatching the eggs will save us money and give us an opportunity to watch the natural process of chickens hatching eggs.

We were sad too, however that one chick is doing very well! It's cool to see them grow up.
I don't really have any good advise except to keep the hen happy. Keep food and water nearby and let her do what she knows to do. She'll do fine :)

I have two Silkie hens and one Show-Girl hen. All three are with the same rooster. They started laying eggs around 20 weeks of age. One of the Silkie hens has not gone broody at all. This one laid eggs for about 13 weeks or so before going broody. My Show-Girl is broody now and she is a little younger than the Silkies. Yes I agree. "normal" chickens aren't as cute. Silkies are fantastic. We are breeding and raising more because they are so much fun to look at :)

Yes, most of these are the Silkie eggs. That big dark brown egg is not Silkie. It was given to us from someone at a chicken show. I believe it is Maran.

Silkies are my favourite chook and they are very pretty.
They are our favorites too. They are beautiful. They aren't the most prolific egg layers, but they make wonderful broody hens.

Many people think this because this is what we've been told for a long long time. It's not true. Even in the case of wild birds they will not abandon the young just because they are touched.

I only eat fresh eggs. I collect eggs everyday from my layers. These eggs get placed in the refrigerator to be stored for later. When we have a hen sitting on eggs to hatch, we discard all eggs that did not hatch after their expected time.
I'm not sure what the last part of your comment is supposed to mean, but the brown egg is from a chicken known as the Maran.

You shouldn't turn the eggs over because the mom does that to keep the tempature even and if you turn them it might disturb the process

i know this is way long ago but never turn eggs I'm not hating but when u turn them the fluids that are still in with the babies to feed them can cause them to drown that's why the mom turns them and makes them the perfect way so then the babies don't die

yes, i was thinking about that. our town just passed an ordinance where we can have chickens, but our neighbors are very close, so only wanted to get a breed that was quieter than other chickens. how many would you recommend? is 3 a good number ?

im first comment yeahhh :) i have only 1 silkie femal an 1 silkie rooster i am hoping my silkie will hatch chicks this year but my silkie hasent even started laying yet haha so if you have more silkies how many have went broody and when they went broody like how old where they and around long after they started laying if you have more silkies and how many of the silkies have went broody befor if you have more thank you and plzs replyy :)

She? Do you mean the mama hen? Her name is "Baby" and she is not noisy at all. The chicks aren't really that noisy either. The Silkie breed is a gentle quiet breed.
Three would be pretty easy to manage. They don't need a lot of room. How much room do you have? Do you have a yard?
