I had a yellow Kalanchoe, but I gave it to my grandmother as a present (when it was in full bloom). Took 1 leaf off, and planted it in my pot where I keep various succulents. It grew roots and I transplanted it to it's separate pot about two months ago. Just today, I noticed hat it has started growing a new stem. I really like Kalanchoe. I'm glad I found your channel - am a new subscriber.
No way. You placed the leaf into the soil and it grew another plant in a space of its own. How is the plant doing now? I will try doing that with the leaves that fall off the plant. I think the plant is losing leaves because of overwatering and the hot summer sun. I think the Winter sun is not as strong as the Summer sun. Fingers crossed.

This is one of my first plants, my Katie, she is SO dramatic! She WILL let me know when she is not happy... lol. Relocated her indoors due to winter, how could I tell she disliked her assigned space? She swayed all the way to one side, closer to the sun... Katie knows what she wants so she was relocated to a brighter spot and is thriving! ♥️

I just found a couple pots at IKEA 'as is' for one US dollar each. I love the challenge of a rescued plant and this is such a great video. I also rescued and regrew Poinsettas I found near a garbage can this year. Subscribing, so helpful.

I have always been into plants call me if I have over 100 but I've never had a flowering Kalanchoe. "Mother of Thousands/Devil's Backbone" but I was riding home from the store and was behind the local Lowe's, and I saw a bunch of dirt around the dumpster. And thought why not have a look what'd they throw away? Found 8-9 Florist Kalanchoe plants some almost gone, but I grabbed a bag I found and threw them all in and threw it in my backpack and planted them RIGHT when I got home. They're starting to give off a few new flowers already. Lol I love the colors they give off. I want to propagate 1-2 pieces of each color (3-4) I have, into one pot and have a little flurry of them. Lol

I love your natural vibrations you have with plants; "let it be natural"🧡 - I've been buying fake plants, yes, I read that even fake plants are healing, the visual of green and color the mind takes in and ah, calming. So, I bought at a supermarket a real honest to goodness live plant, a kalanchoe, it was just blooming and I will say the flowers are now in cute tight little clumps. they are just beautiful. My problem is the leaves were green and shiny now some are and drooping turning yellowish, so while listening to you I watered it and wow the water just ran right out, good sign or bad? Well, loving that vase and the blue material you have there behind you. Oh, I also just cut one leaf off, would you leave the leaves alone? oops, had you on pause and I see what you've done with the leaves. : ) peace light and love ~

.. I actually brought the one I have back to life .. it was give to my boyfriends mother a year ago a remembrance flower and she let it almost die....I brought it home and it doesn't even look like the plant .. I really wish I had took pictures of it because it was just two leggy thin steams .. I read the little tag stuck in the pot and for a year have been doing the same care for it... But thanks to your video I now know how to get it to bloom again. I'm in West Virginia so I'm just going to let it naturally bloom.

Now I have a Christmas cactus, 6 orchids, and several herb plants, they all sent to me out if frustration.....and I revived them all.
This plant is my most recent, so I found your video, and I'm confident it will join in with all my other castoff rescues. Thank you so much! After suffering a heart attack, gardening gives me the right amount of physical activity to keep me healthy again......but it's taking me longer to get around my garden and greenhouse...but the plants need their care!
By the way, I'm in suburban Detroit, but grew up in Pittsburgh.......where in Pennsylvania do you hail from?

Hi there. Great vid with loads of info. My kalanchoe is out of control. I had it passed as a tiny plant 3 yrs ago. I've just left it to do its own thing. It blooms every Yr. Now it's over 2 ft high. Spindly and I have zero clue how to cut it back and repot it. Any help would be massively appreciated appreciated. Thanks.

I just cut off stems (green) and push them into the soil and they grow wonderfully, they need shade here in California. I have them outside all year around, they need next to no care. I love them. I bought 5 and have a ton now.

I'm in the nyc area and like you during the winter months, not much light, and yet it did flower a little...but because lack of daylight it was stretching some ...i guess 'looking' for more light during the daytime, but even those flowered.
consider trimming the stretched growth back a bit!
I get these in mixed flower gifts.I work as a gardener.I grow them in a green house.Their flowering started feb 10th 2022.I hang plants like a forest.And store these low.Until now.Pre spring color.

I did want to ask: in terms of keeping it in a dark space should I start to have it covered by the box now or should i wait til it is blooming season again?
glad to help! i would not use the box now, it is generally better to do that in september time period. i would let it grow naturally. you may get flowers in the spring. and then if you want at the end of summer next year use the box

Most plants, but especially succulents are better watered from the bottom. Make sure they have well draining substrate and let them dry out completely and then soak them in a bucket to make sure the entire dried out soil lump is wetted. Then allow the water in the soil to fully run off and then dump that excess run off left in the saucer. Then you wait until it's fully dried out before watering it again. Remeber, making sure the entire root/soil lump is watered means you're also making sure you get fresh air to all the roots. Watering pushes out stale air and draws in fresh air. Replenishing the air is almost as important to plants as water.
I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that, but if it works for you then that’s what counts
@@plantvibrations Drenching the soil like that is definitely not a good idea in winter. When temperatures are low and daylight short that soil's gonna take forever to dry. I do this sometimes in hot summer days when i'm sure the soil is going to dry fast no matter how much water it holds. Tried watering from the bottom and from above and did't see any difference. If your soil is fresh and not compacted it doesn't matter how you water it.
I live in the desert....we have SUN all the time....I'll probably never use a box to cover, and I'll place it in a shadier place. Is this a good or bad idea? It could be in the 40's a few nights, that it. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge !!!!!! I love my plant!!!!!
yes definitely place it in a shadier spot so that it isn't baking in the full sun during the peak hours!

Thanks for the info. Mine was a cutting and is about to bloom. I had no idea what it was and thought it was a creeping Charlie (Swedish Ivy) until it started to bud. I just identified it as a kalanchoe.

I have had the hardest time to grow these plants. I've been gifted 5 in the past 3 years all have never bloomed and then eventually died. This was the best informative video I have found in the last few years. And I have searched and searched for someone to answer my questions. I'm so excited to try these methods as I'm once again a new owner of the khalanchoe plant. 😅😊

@@plantvibrations to update you I actually ended up getting new buds as I continued to cut the dead flowers and leaves. And kept up on watering not as much. However my buds are not blooming its been about 1 week and a half. Then I noticed the dirt was really dried so I added more water. I see more new buds coming from the bottom but the older ones on top don't want to bloom. How long does it usually take for the buds to bloom?

My son gave me this plant for Mother’s Day last year. I didn’t have a clue what it was or how to care for it. I’m shocked it’s green and healthy looking. I’m scared it won’t be after I actually put it in a pot. It grew too big for the flimsy pot it came in, and broke from the roots.
I put it in a bowl of water, and it has new roots. It’s deep green and beautiful, but I’m scared to plant it. I don’t want it to dye because it holds sentimental value for me. Wish me luck.

Hi Devin, I have 3 Kalanchoe that I planted last year in pots in my front yard and they seems to be struggling with brown leaves, not blooming, etc. I need to prune back the dead stuff but my question is this: is it possible to revive kalanchoe even if they appear "dead" Im very new at gardening and I am truly grateful for experts like you to show the care and upkeep. I have no idea that they needed so much darkness. I live in California in between San Fran and Sacramento where the summer months can be brutal for ALL living things! lol I guess Im seeking your advice on whether I should try and keep them in darkness in hopes of reviving them?
hi Catherine. if i were you, i wouldn't worry about the period of darkness since you have yours outside. just let them find their natural bloom cycle. but i would recommend that you cut them back to all them to regrow. even though they appear dead they will likely grow back fine. cutting them to about 4-5" tall would be good. they won't look like much for awhile but they'll come back

thank you!! i just bought one for my mom's birthday, it's in okay shape but def stretching a bit, i assume the store was giving it little light as it was in the back i hope we can get it in better shape soon. i found an article saying i should repot it in a mix of 50% potting soil and 50% catcus mix but many flowers are in bloom so should i just put it in a clay pot and wait until flowering is over?
I think that sounds like a good mix. and yes wait until the plant has finished flowering and then cut it back in half or else it will continue to get tall and leggy. at that point you can change the mix as well.

I've had one for about 4 years. Never bloomed after I first bought it but it was nice and healthy. In September I put it in a closet to encourage blooming... Within a week it dropped most of the leaves. Took it out and the new growth was not healthy at all. I had to chop all the stems and leave it almost totally bald so it would start growing healthy leaves again... I saved it, but still don't know what happened. Maybe needed a more airy place? Or maybe should have moved it to the light for a few hours? I wish it bloomed again, it was a lovely orange shade...
It’s hard to say exactly what went wrong but if it has started to regrow then it is very likely that it will rebloom in the coming months for yoy

Oh wow! Great video. I just bought two of these at Walmart as they had them for sale for Easter. But they are just tiny little plants about 4 inches tall. Do they grow that big like you have them in this video? I have already transplanted them in larger pots, just not as big as you have. Will they grow bigger if I put them in bigger pots? I love plants and usually do well with them but this is the first time for me with these. I'm in Nova Scotia so they will be house plants here. Even though summers here can get a bit warm, it definitely cools off at night.
awesome! glad the video helps. yes, they will eventually fill out. but its important to give them trimmings along the way to encourage the bushy growth or else they will end up getting quite leggy, like how they do in nature. so after they've bloomed, cut them back a couple inches and that will encourage them to branch out. and in the warm months they will love being outside, preferably with morning sun

I have a kalanchoe that’s just one long lengthy stem with leaves, probably over 30cm tall and I have no idea what to do with it! I don’t know if I should trim it in some way or what. Any advice?

I was gifted with a beautiful kalanchoe with white flowers about a month or so ago, the flowers lasted awhile and I didn’t water it but after awhile the flowers started to die and my soil got super dry so i removed the flowers and I watered it.. my my leaves are turning yellow and wilting and dying. What did I do wrong? I also took it out the light so get more flowers and it just looks like my kalanchoe is dying now, leaves are just starting to fall off

Help!!! What if I have a small plant in bloom and the leaves are turning crispy at the edges? I’m worried about my plant! I didn’t know what it was at first so I might have overwatered it a little in it’s slightly small pot without a drainage hole. I’m going to make a hole soon and have stopped watering it though the soil is still moist like a damp-ish sponge. I also put one small pellet of 6-2-4 Microlife citrus fertilizer in the tea pot spout(that’s the shape of the pot it’s in and I cant take it out) I thought it was a Bonsai rose at first but the leaves really threw it off so I found out it was not indeed a rose plant. Thanks!
hmmm, i think you may need to repot it. they really dont want to remain in a moist damp environment for prolonged periods. regarding the crisping edges, has it recently been placed in a lot more sunlight?

watering maybe once a month will be alright when totally covered like that. it is alright to let it go super dry. it may look a bit shriveled up but it'll plump back up quickly
I have one that is turning yellow for no detectable reason. I currently have it outside on a table on my porch, which made it happy last year. I'm not watering too often or too much at once. I moved it to a more sunny part of the porch and now I'm waiting to see how it does there. I don't know what to think. It has new leaves growing in while also turning yellow on older leaves. What say you oh plant whisperer? Any advice?
They typically lose their lower foliage as they grow taller! You can cut it back to start it fresh

I live in Washington state, my wife just got one should we plant it outside . It rains alot here during the winter .

Hi Devin! Thanks for such a detailed explanation. I've got a question regrading the soil. I just bought a Kalanchoe and the soil is quite moist (it's been 3 days). Should I be repotting it? If I have to, should I be dusting off the old soil completely from the roots? Also, what kind of soil do kalanchoes need? Thanks a lot.
Hi! if you just brought it home definitely wait a couple weeks before replanting if you decide to. they're normally fine in the soil they get sold with but just wait to water it until they dry out. ideally it will fill out the pot in the next few months and the soil type won't be too relevant because it will be drying out faster with its larger root system

Hi Devin! When do you suggest changing the soil or fertilizing this plant? :) - and to clarify, not setting the plant in a dark area after blooming does not impact the plants ability to bloom next season?
And just to reclarify, it’s okay for me to not give my plant a ‘dormant’ period? I still want the plant to bloom to the best of its ability!
You can change soil every 3 years. Fertilize once a month. Yeah it’s absolutely ok not to give it the dormant period, it will find its own rhythm
When Fall starts to come (October) should I leave my plant in the closet? Or what do I do with it?? Its also a little leggy.
yes now is a great time to give it the period of darkness. you can also trim it back before placing it in the closet so that way once you take it out it'll start growing again without getting too leggy
Please try to clear up some confusion I’m having about getting it to rebloom. You put it in darkness for 12 hrs and then what? Do you put it back in the light till it’s time to return it to darkness? Or do you keep it in darkness for 2 weeks straight without exposing it to light at all. I have a little flaming Katy that is starting to get some real growth but not many blooms. I’m doing what I know to do to encourage blooming, but hadn’t heard that darkness was an idea. Right now my Katy is in my dark closet and hasn’t seen light for 2 days.
yes leave it in total darkness without watering for two weeks and then bring back out to normal conditions. that darkness should initiate bud formation

I have 3 different hardy hibiscus planted in the front yard and want to know if the old blooms with seeds in them are able to planted into the ground? I would love to have more in the yard. They are pink, white, red and we love them.
Hi! thanks for your support :) you can try planting them directly in the garden right now, or save the seeds in a glass jar in the fridge until spring and plant them then. or try both methods and see which works better for you. the third option is to save the seeds now and start them indoors in the two months before spring. thats the most involved method, but the best success rate.
Hi Devin, I have a few different types of kalanchoe that are in Bonsai Jack’s super gritty mix. I’m wondering if that medium is a little too well draining for some succulents, like kalancheo. I noticed you are able to check to see if your plant is dry by touch, which doesn’t work with the gritty mix. What potting medium do you recommend.
@@tracyfry2188 Hi Tracy. that super gritty mix may indeed be too well draining, but if your plants look happy then id stick with it. you could do a 50/50 mix of what you have with a normal indoor plant potting mix, which is what i use. i think during the winter months your mix will be very good for ensuring the soil doesn't remain too wet for too long. i'd experiment with a few different medias if you can and see what your plants like best
I’ve had two of these plants in various sizes and all have died! I have one now that’s flowers are dried up. Some of the leaves have brown edges. Should I cut the dried flowers off? I water it once a week but apparently not enough.
Sometimes they’re sold very pot bound and can handle water more often! Definitely trim away th e brown stuff

Hi, I just have questions. When you keep it in complete darkness do you still water it or no? Second question is that after 14hrs of keeping it in complete darkness do remove it out of the box again? Thank you!!
It’s not going to need much water during this time but it will benefit from some water sparingly, like once every 10-14 days. And yep, you can remove it for the rest of the day

When you cut off old flowers, does it matter where exactly you cut off the old flower? Closer to the flowers, in the middle, to the bottom of the stem?
You can cut just below the flower if you see there are more buds coming up from the stem. Otherwise cut the whole stem off as low as you can
My plant is dropping its leaves, what is causing this, over watering or under watering. I didn't think I was watering it too much.

When you put a box over it, still have to keep it watered right? That will let light get to it, you said not to even turn a light on ! Please explain
Yes you will want to keep it from drying out, but in the dark it won’t need water for like 4-6 weeks due to its succulent nature. Checking on your plant to see if it needs water or not won’t affect the success. Sorry for the confusion
If you're in the southern hemisphere it will be the other way round, southern window light vs northern window light

Hi, I was wondering if you knew what to do when it gets a fungi infection? I’ve repoted it this summer with a soil that wasn’t of good quality and that’s how it got sick (happened with several of my plants which I potted with this particular soil, that’s how I know that it was about the soil). It’s not dying at all, as a matter of fact it grows new leaves constantly, but it can’t flower in these conditions. What can I do to get rid of the infection? I don’t want to throw it away. I’ll take all advices right now.
if you can tell there is actually fungus on the foliage, it is generally impossible to get rid of aka the trash is the only legitimate solution. if it is just the soil, then remove the plant from the soil, wash the roots completely of any remaining soil and repot in fresh. then they will be good
I just got gifted one of these and I’ve had the worst time trying to keep it alive every day the leaves are dying one by one it’s not even close to the end of its bloom it’s a magenta one and my leaves areeee nottttt crispy any more maybe I’m over watering it it’s the only thing I can think of I have a good green thumb and I’m usually really good with plants and the pot it was gifted in has no drainage hole and I think that’s the issue as well I need to repot it any chance you have good advice for me?
It may just be shedding its lower leaves naturally. After it’s done blooming you can cut it back and let it start over
