Thank you!! My husband brought me this plant home from the store and I had no idea how to care for it. I have had it for 4 months (it's the red one) on a table in my kitchen window. It's flowering like crazy, but I also have a lot of dead flowers and was scared to just start pruning as I was not sure how it would respond. This was so helpful! I will trim it. It's really happy and has been getting bigger and still flowering.

Heyy firstly wanna say i LOVE your accent, it sounds really musical! Second, thank you for the pruning tips, I've got 3 kalanchoe so it's helped me a lot. And third, so so awesome that you guys are vegan and try not to use dead animal ingredients and stuff like that. I'm doing the same thing and finding lots of good soil and fertilisers so it's good to see more people gardening in this way :) I'm off to look for your video of the kalanchoe all potted together. :) Much love from Sydney.
So happy you love my accent :-D So happy you agree with not wanting to use any animal ingredients, and going vegan nearly 9 years ago now was one of the best things I ever did, although I have found it easy food wise, it can be challenge as a gardener as so many soils have added animal fertilisers in and many companies dont reply back to emails when I ask them to declare whats in their soils etc, but its so wonderful to do what we can do as much as we can, So happy you loved the pruning tips too, I bet your 3 Kalanchoes are beautiful

Very helpful! I try to find videos so I know how to prune or even propagate plants , but almost always they never show you exactly how to do it, they just say and not show. Great video 👍🙂

I'm so glad that you said 'in nature there is nobody to prune the flowers', because that's what I'm always thinking about pruning and cutting plants! You shouldn't HAVE to do it to keep the plant alive, right?

Thank you for the video. I'll find some video that cut the stem all the way to the ground instead and i find it will waste the plant. I've tried propagate them but failed. So this really help so now i know i dont have to cut them all back.❤

my yellow one is about to open, last summer i copped about 6 one foot sections from my clients large bush, plungted them ito a pot of soil and let them do their thing, 4 survived and they all put buds on. my roommate has at least 10, all different colors and doubles , ruffles, they are easy to overlook but so gorgeous

Because these go dormant in summer and flower during winter, you can treat like a Christmas Cactus. What I mean is, to encourage budding and loads of flowers during the growth period place them in a dark place for 12-16 hours for 6-8 weeks from mid-July. Make sure it is completely dark, even an incandescent bulb could upset them. For the rest of the day place them in a sunny spot and water as you would during the dormant time.

Thank you very much! I accidentally cut a stem that had buds on it, but I stuck it in some water and am hoping maybe it will propagate there. Thanks for the educational video!
Good luck with propagating :-D these plants root well in water and if you remove the flower buds it may help the cuttings to root faster as the energy can go to making roots instead of the flowers

I got a bright magenta one several weeks ago, and I'm now in love with them. Brings out a pop of color in my collection! Also you say they are winter bloomers, but mine is blooming very strongly and it's late spring. Does that mean its a forced bloom?

Thank you so much for this information. My kitty died recently and I put Kalanchoe plants in the house where I used to see him. I’m new at this, so I want to do a good job. But since cats like to be in the sun, I’m afraid I may have burned mine from too much sun. Then, thinking they must need water if they are burned, I watered them too much. (I have some white mold growing on the outside of the pots). What should I do next? They are extremely leafy and all the flowers have died. I do see new buds forming despite me pulling off the dead ones, so I think they are still alive. I want to take care of them properly from here on. Thanks again for the great information. I love these little plants and they are easing the pain from missing my darling Benny. (That’s him as my avatar. I don’t have the heart to change it).🌸

I don't think these are supposed to be in the sun because they are indoor plants. Filtered sunlight is what they prefer.
How different can be how a plant grow from country to country. Here this plants don't like the sun. Actually their leaves get burned if you put it in the sun. They love semi shadow spots. Other difference is that here they bloom in spring. Thanks for sharing Lyn. I am amazed with the different grow conditions.

Hi Alyssa :-D so happy you loved the video, the good news is you can water your Kalanchoe after you have pruned it, once you have watered it let the soil completely dry out before watering again, I water mine every time the soil has dried out, they like to go a bit longer in between waterings during the Winter months, and in the Winter I water mine about once a month, but if they are starting to grow buds in the Winter I will water more frequently about once every 10 -14 days, good luck with your wonderful new Kalanchoe and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching XXXX
A nice tool for this kind of plant grooming is called a grape shear. It's a short pair of scissors with narrow, pointed blades and large finger loops (A godsend for people like me with very large hands. It hurts when your thumb gets wedged into those tiny thumb loops on a regular scissors.). They're made for cutting apart those big bunches of grapes you find in the markets. You can find them at a very low price on Amazon or EBay. I keep several pairs around the house because they are useful for a thousand things.

What about if my flowers are dying and the stems are beginning to dry out, how much should I cut?

Hi there, love the video. I love the Kalanchoe plant.. I purchase them locally from Home Depot, they are full mature and beautiful. I keep them outdoors being careful to catch early day sun and then move to shade later , I live in Los Angeles and summers can be pretty hot and dry. I am still learning when to and not to water but cannot find a happy medium. Leaves are turning yellow on the edges and the leaves feel soft and fall off easily. The plant also appears to separate as the flowers dry up and are removed. By the time I've deadheaded the plant it looks a skinned cat.
Please offer suggestions. Thank you
Hi Hector :-D so happy you love these Kalanchoe plants too, they are beauties, it sounds like you have them in the best location with protecting them by moving them to shade later in the day, because of the warm temperatures I would water your Kalanchoes every time the soil has started to dry out, I would give them a good watering every time, and if the leaves feel soft and fall off easy its usually because they need more regular watering, I would water as soon as the soil has started to dry out but not fully dried out, this could be every other day or every day in very warm weather, in Winter they can go longer in between watering, a bit of fertiliser every week also gives these plants a good booster too and may help to prevent them from separating when the flowers start to dry up, good luck with your Kalanchoes and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Los Angeles for a fantastic Friday XXXX
Hey, great video! I got a yellow kalanchoe from Asda last month for 10p reduced to clear; wanted to save the poor bastard before it ended up in landfill. It was heavily in bloom and in the worlds smallest pot so I repotted it and she seems to be doing well! However its my first experience with kalanchoes so I'm still learning about them. Is it normal for quite a few of the buds to not be fully flowering and almost dying/drying up before they bloom? The original blooms are still doing well so I did wonder if potentially much of the energy is still going to them and not allowing the new growth to do as well? I'm happy to leave her as is to let her do her own thing as blooms and 'prettiness' isn't of high importance to me, I was just curious why they were doing this and if I can help her.

My plant has gotten very leggy and at the bottom of the middle tall stem roots have grown, can I cut this off and plant in another pot? Thank you for any help, love the video, very informative, now I realise I should have pruned it to stop it getting leggy!!

Hi there, I overwatered my Kalanchoe and now the flowers are dying. I’ve left the plant to dry out for nearly 2 weeks now but the soil is still damp. What should I do?
Hi there, thats great that you left the plant to dry out for a couple of weeks, although the soil is still damp you could wrap the roots in a paper towel to help to absorb more of the moisture, I wouldn't worry about the flowers dying off as this will not harm the plant and the flowers don't last for long, often only a couple of weeks, I would re pot the plant again in totally dry very well draining cactus and succulent soil, and leave unwatered for about 10 days before watering, thanks so much for watching and have a fantastic Tuesday today XXXX

Hi, if you still answer questions on here, is it a good idea to cut off individual dead blooms? All of the flower heads on my Kalanchoe have a mix of dead flowers and blooming flowers so i'm wondering if i should cut off the dead flowers individually

I got one from a greenhouse a month ago and I think it's been overwatered and the the flowers are dying off and a couple of the bottom leaves are cracking and look like they're blistered at the top. I stopped watering it now but I have 2 questions: do I usually have to wait till it completely dries before watering? And what do I do about the 2 leaves?

On other videos regarding these plants, they say indirect light not direct sun. Have you heard that before?
Hi there :-D yes these Kalanchoe blossfeldianas can also take bright indirect light too, but I find that these plants have a bit of a habit of growing 'leggy' if grown in indirect light, in more direct or part sun they grow more compact an dare much more likely to flower, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

Greetings from Canada 👋 I have watched this video several times but I still have questions. My grocery store Kalenchoe blossfeldiana (the 2nd) was very generously watered in the store where she came from. Two (?) weeks later I'm still waiting for her soil to dry. I have her set up for maximum air circulation so now I just hope there's no lasting harm. Meanwhile there's lots of blooms & buds. I don't want to traumatize the poor thing any more than she has been already so am wondering if best to wait til a cluster has completely died off before removing, & should I aim for as close to the stalk as possible when I do?

My leaves are... Sad some are already crispy and some are soft. Should I take the whole leaf off?

Hi. I have the pink one. Just one small cluster Left. It’s quite a big house plant, probably 3x plus bigger than u have in your video. Now my plant has a tall green bit sprouting up from the middle. I no it’s difficult without a pic but how do I chop this down to give the plant a more rounder look ??
I’m a total beginner, honestly you could write what I know on a postage stamp 😂. Tbh I’m surprised it’s survived this long 😂. I’ve had it since March and it’s just on my lounge window sill. Thank u in advance x

Your plants are beautiful..do they like to be rootbound?I wonder if that's why mine didn't bloom this year also?I noticed you have yours in small pots..mine is in a little bit larger pot than yours..i heard African violets usually bloom if they are rootbound so I'm wondering if that is the same for kalanchoe plants🤔thanks so much

Lynn, my 2 have that mildew and powder on their leaves. How do I get rid of it? I've tried rubbing alcohol but it didn't work.
Hi Michelle :-D it can be a sign that the air humidity is too high for them and or the soil may be kept a bit too damp, causing the leaves to form mildew, and sometimes moving the plant to a drier atmosphere and less watering may help, the best way to remove it is to gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth with a touch of mild soap to remove the mildew and powder, if that doesn't work a horticultural fungicide spray would be the best thing to spray to treat the leaves :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching :-D sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from right across the Emerald Isle XXXX
Hope u answer, soon as I got mine just about all flowers diet off in the first week the plan itself looks fine I had to cut off the flowers but it never regrew the flowers so I don't know how to get the flowers back

Hi Berni :-D you may be best to prune it right back and hopefully new shoots will appear from the lower stems, its difficult to see how damaged your plant is but these Kalanchoes are very good at recovering from cold damage etc, you can also propagate the leaves if they are are healthy by placing a leaf on top of the soil as a cutting, but if the roots and lower part are ok, then prune your plant right back and keep in sunny position and ina well draining soil mix, XXXXX

Hi Chris :-D I will be re potting a lot of my Kalanchoes in the next few weeks and will share a few video when I do, its best to wait until your Kalanchoe has stopped flowering before re potting it into a cactus and succulent soil mix

I have a calandiva which seems similar. The flowers are stars with few petals, not the multi-petaled kalanchoe. The flowers are on long stalks that droop over. I don't know if that is because they were at my local supermarket and dried out - just bought today and put in garden - although the soil felt damp, or do I need to do something?
I bet your Calandiva is beautiful :-D I would leave the flowers and if they are drooping over that may be normal for them if the flowers are a heavier than the flower stalk :-D XXXXXX
Love your video! I need some help with my kalanchoe.. I've had it for about over a year now. It just finished its lovely red bloom and I am really stuck on what to do. It is very elongated and the bottom of the stem has no leaves on it, lots of calluses, but only the top half has and they're quite small leaves. Should I cut it in half and try and re-pot the top half? I'm scared of killing the plant, I love it so much and have learned so much from it. I have had no new leaf growth and it just looks so bare. I would send photos of it but I can't through comments

I started mine from a trimming I found that only had 6 leaves on it. Now it's huge. I didn't prune it except to remove lower leaves and then replant it a further 6 inches down in the dirt. I'm trying to get it to flower but I've never seen how it starts that process. I'm going to post a photo of the plant. There's these extra branches coming from everywhere now. Again I did not prune so why the extra branches now? Is this the start of flowering? It's 20 inches tall at the tallest 2 stalks. but even the shorter ones are branching out. Thanks for any input!

Hi Joshua :-D thats wonderful you have successfully grown your Kalanchoe to a big size from a cutting, its very possible if its branching out that it is preparing for flowering, these plants will send out lots of new branches from the sides as they mature, they can be a bit tricky to get to re bloom because they are very sensitive to any other light source, and if you have these plants indoors where you have lights on it can prevent them from flowering, mine didn't re bloom until I moved them into a spare room where I don't have any lights on and only natural light from the windows, I fertilise mine with a low strength feed of Tomato fertiliser in Spring, Summer and early Fall to encourage them to bloom for the Winter, it works really well, I hope you will get flowers in the near future, thanks so much for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

Hi because these plants will flower yearly you will have to wait until next year until you get the next flowering period for these plants, keep them in a sunny natural light position and they should re bloom every year with lots of blooms, they are difficult to re bloom if kept inside the house though as they need natural day length differences with night and day to re bloom, but if you can find a sunny windowsill without additional artificial lighting from the house you should get these plants to re bloom yearly, sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle for a sunny Sunday XXXXX

I do have one question if you don't mind, the window I have which gets lots of direct sun and lots of light is a window ledge over a radiator below that is on constantly through winter, would this be ok, or does it need to be away from heat please? Hello! I got one of these kalanchoes in mini-verdion and it was growing very well!, But we got a heat wave and I was a bit more generous with the watering. Now I'm watching this videos because a bunch of the flowers dried out and see looking a bit lifeless. I don't know if I watered them too little and the heat got to them or too much...I'm not sure what is the criteria to water them, since they still are succulents
Hi Filipa, so sorry to hear about the flowers, sometimes this can happen if its too warm and the flowers can dry out faster, the best thing to do is to water these plants every time the soil in their pots has completely dried out, I always let the soil dry out first before watering them again, I water them much less in Winter and water them about once every 3-4 weeks in Winter, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a sunny Sunday XXXX

Hi there, I think that the flower stem is dying back and the good news is that this is normal and nothing to worry about, you may be best to cut the rest of the remaining stem off right from the base, but if the brown color is on the main stem of the actual plant it can be a bad sign and possible rot, if the main part of the stem of the plant is brown its best to cut right back to where the stem is green and also get the plant out of the pot to check that the roots are ok and that there are no signs of root rot, good luck with your plant and thanks so much for watching XXXX

Hi Kelly :-D sometimes it can be difficult to re bloom these Kalanchoes as they need the correct length of light as house lights can offset their natural inbuilt body clock for flowering, I used to have this problem with mine but I now keep them in the polytunnel outside and they flower yearly for me now, if you can place them in a position where they receive natural light away from artificial lights, they should flower for you the following year

It'll definitely grow bigger if you repot it. I repotted mine during the summer and it trippled in size and is currently blooming.
Hi Lyn. I just bought two Kalanchoe - Calandiva. I noticed that one has a leaf like that of Chrysanthemum leaf. do they require the same treatment. I would like to propagate single leaf cuttings, my glass house is not heated can I keep them in my green house over winter.
