Reshaping My Leggy Kalanchoe (Hard Pruning) to Encourage a Bushier Look with 2-Week Update

  • Hi guys, my kalanchoe has grown really leggy with long leafless stems in the middle. I really prefer the fuller, bushier appearance for this plant so I decided to do a hard prune to encourage back-budding. The bonus is that I can now propagate the stems to gift!
    I ended up doing a separate video on the propagation and turned it into a little experiment to see if sphagnum moss, peat/perlite, or water propagation worked best for this kalanchoe!

    This is by far the best video I've seen regarding how to care for a Kalanchoe besides the flowering maintenance. Thank you - mine has gotten so leggy that I think I will be able to repropagate 5 new plants. Thank you!

    So cool that you included the growth at the end to show that this works. I was watching the video thinking "There's no way this plant can recover from that much pruning!" 😂 What an incredible little plant! I'll have to give my leggy kalanchoe a good pruning tomorrow.

      wow I thought I was the only one not knowing when to prune my Kalanchoe. I just snipped it way back, it was so tall and leggy. I see now I have little white roods coming out all up the stems. This video showed me, told me, they're ROOTS. So I'm going to wait 2 weeks to see what happens. It's March 31, 2022 today.

    Mine is soooo leggy. Like 6-8” of nothing leggy. So far anything I’ve broken off accidentally has rooted very quickly in soil without rooting powder even. I’m going to do this and see how it goes! I’m thinking of taking out the middle sections and planting them separate too… there’s enough little hairs everywhere I think it’ll work. Thanks for being brave and showing it’s okay to cut it down to nothing! I’m always nervous to hard prune.

The leaves are also starting to turn yellow. I think it’s getting too much sun, so I’ll move it, but the soft leaves began before the summer, any ideas as to what’s wrong? Lack of water? Hi! Do you let the cuttings dry before sticking them in the soil? Do you make the roots grow in water before putting them in the soil?

    • @plantingparadise1546
      @plantingparadise1546  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi! For these, I would let them dry before sticking them in soil, but will throw a fresh cut in water. These are super hardy and forgiving, I haven't had any issues. I have transferred from water to soil but there is going to be an adjustment period as water roots and soil roots are different and there is a high chance of rotting if the water roots are very well established before you put them in soil. If I am going to plant in soil, I generally will just stick the cutting in very damp soil to root. Good luck!

    • @plantingparadise1546
      @plantingparadise1546  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply! I honestly water it thoroughly and then wait until its about 80% dry (where the pot feels really light when you pick it up). So I water deeply and infrequently, maybe once a week or 2 depending on the growing conditions.

    Howany kalanchoe can be planted together without being to much?

    • @plantingparadise1546
      @plantingparadise1546  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on the size of your plant and the size of your pot! I usually like them to be a bit crowded to get that fuller look. I will use a pot that has 1 extra inch of diameter than the total root balls of the plants that I am potting in there. However, just make sure that you use well aerated soil and keep an eye on how quickly they use the water. If you find that the pot goes dry too frequently, then consider splitting the pot, or upping the pot size. Happy planting!

    I have an incredibly leggy kalanchoe. I have never pruned it before other than a stem at the beginning that was browning. So all the 3 stems are on one side of the plant and they stretch up. I don’t see nodes… but there is a leaf at every bump (I assume those are nodes..). I do see tiny white roots towards the bottom. Would I just randomly choose one to prune off?

    • @plantingparadise1546
      @plantingparadise1546  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! The nodes are the bumps where the leaves come out. You can certainly pick an area to prune. I recommend going halfway between 2 nodes on the stem. If you stick the top half in water, it will propagate again but I like to give it 20 minutes to dry before I put it in water. When I cut, I like to cut a little further down than I want to see the new growth because it will push out the stem before it grows new leaves. Good luck!

    • @plantingparadise1546
      @plantingparadise1546  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once propagated, I water when 90% dry and have it in an aroid mix. I've found that mine grows best with early morning light and bright shade outdoors. Indoors, mine prefers bright direct southern light.
      I've also found that it depends on the overall conditions. I've had props survive a darker north facing room with lower temps (60-70) and minimal watering. I imagine they're in dormancy at that point but they remain green and happy.
