the problem is Philippines govt did not do or spend well on their tourism marketing campaign. Even among neighboring countries also philippines is not a popular holiday destinations. And the other big thing that the country is missed so badly is to tap the huge potential of Muslim or Halal tourism. Even country such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan/China is aggressively promoting their countries as a Muslim-friendly destinations. Philippines on the other hand, is very slow in everything. I giving a constructive comment, please see it from a brightside.

It's because the Philippines land is scattered. Unlike other SEAC they're grouped in a big land mass which you can travel by land, where in the Philippines, many of the beautiful destination you need to travel boat and by air. Other SEAC are oil producers so they don't need to import fuel. When goods are imported, expect import tax and tax will add up to the cost. We're trying to produce our own oil but China is preventing us by invading our territorial waters.

I've been watchin youtubers vloggers who visit Malaysia and they go to some famous touristical place but not to our mountains or beaches, usually they only stay in KL, or maybe visit Penang. Even if a foreigner stay for months in Malaysia they wouldnt know these hidden gems unless they made friends with locals or follow local tourist pages. Or maybe it's only gems for us, which is not a bad thing because we appreciate our home and cultures.

based on this video many tourists are visiting Thailand since it's a jump-off point going to neighboring countries Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar.. They are connected by land so it's easy to travel.. On the other hand few tourists visit my country the Philippines, Malaysia or Indonesia since most of these countries are composed of Islands making travel a bit of a hassle. To me the best place to visit is my country since every one literally any one even a young kid can speak in English. You can never be lost in translation while exploring my country.

Most Malaysians are abit reserved about turning our country into a tourist trap. Most of us actually prefer being underrated because we still want our country to be for Malaysians, not tourists.
Not trying to downplay our neighbors, but we are also relatively more globalised and westernised, since most of us are educated in the West or by curriculum of English and/or Australian/Kiwi influence. So that's why we don't usually worship or patronize Westerners as much. Not much "Kreng Jai" here. We shoot our superiors at work when it's necessary. No hard feelings 😅.
Malaysia, Singapore and to a certain extent Brunei, are also more catered towards business travellers and families with children. We simply do not have that exotic vibe that our Indochinese and maritime brethrens have to offer. We share a common colonial past that mainly consist of Malay settlers, Chinese miners and Indian labourers trying to assimilate and not cause a racial riot. So we are literally a nation of immigrants much like the US or Latin America. Oh ya, we also tend to forget the existence our First Nation citizens 😅. We all have this unique love-hate relationship with each other, united by food, Indian Muslim cafeterias i.e Mamaks, sports, racist jokes, and national pride. Which if you ask me is far less attractive than say, homogenized Thai culture.
There is also no homogeneous culture like what the Thais/Lao, Khmers, Viets, and Filipinos can offer. Indonesia and Myanmar on the other hand, are totally different beasts all together since they are way more diverse than all of us. The Indons and Burmese (of their respective diverse ethnic background) are one ofthe most gracious and kind people you can ever meet since most of them come from a life of harship. The Khmers have a special place ( due to the fact I'm part Khmer) in my heart due to how wonderfully gracious they are despite their dark past. Myanmar (my favourite country to travel in SEA) is the new frontier, so much potential but sadly lost due to political instability and ethnic indifferences. Their countries are a must visit to truly appreciate SEA.
There is also the cost factor. Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei are the 3 richest countries in SEA and that naturally means costs are higher. Malaysia and Singapore have the most advanced and diversified economies in SEA, hence there is relatively no urgent need to earn tourist money although Malaysia is still ever so trying to improve its least competent tourism industry. And Brunei is literally a true blue petroleum rich Emirate and you can tell that they don't really care about tourism just yet. And well, Singapore is Singapore, most of them are too wealthy or globalised to give a hoot whether you like their country.
Finally, there is the factor of restriction. Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei are the strictest in terms of social obedience. Brunei has Islamic Hudud laws in place, while Singapore and Malaysia still practice corporal punishment and the death sentence. Drugs are a big nono, trafficking and possession can lead to the death sentence. Singapore has been on a drugs related execution run lately. While Malaysia is on an anti-corruption campaign lately 😅. Let's just say we tend to take the law more seriously, so no room for the hanky panky.
So there you go, a little insight as to why Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei are often overlooked. If you read this far, well thank you! 😂

As a Malaysian, i didnt surprised about that. We have something in similarity, our island in Sabah are pretty similar in the one in the Philippines. Our Malay culture and Borneo culture are quite similar to some races in your country and our Chinese community also same with the one in Phillipines, too many things in common which makes filipino rarely visit to Malaysia. The only differences maybe is Indian culture here. I.did travel to Boracay once, such a beautiful island.

  • @foxylady8828

Tourists find it hard to travel in the Philippines due to the geography itself. You have to book a flight if you want to go to a tourist spot. It's still fun if you want to talk and be friends with the locals. No language barrier; the cleanest water you could ever see; nightlife; island vibes; etc. Other SEA countries have different cultures and are unique compared to the Philippines since we have been colonized by the West, so the influences are somehow familiar to the westerners. Lol (not sure if it's a good thing)

I can't disagree. But Indonesia arguably have the most epic beaches with most are located in East Nusa Tenggara province (near Timor Leste), and West Papua. But the access and infrastructe haven't been managed. So people are often come to only Bali.
The Philippine is 5x smaller than Indonesia in terms of area. And yet have some of amazing beaches. Indonesia being the greater has some area with ugly beaches.
I've been to the Philippines and had a great experience. I love Palawan. If i got to choose between Palawan or Raja Ampat i'd choose Palawan since it's easier to get around. Overall Palawan has a great view but Raja Ampat win the view and the pristine coral reef.

    Just my personal opinion :
in term of popularity, I would say Thailand and Philippines are the most popular in S.E.Asia while Vietnam is gaining popularity fast.
Bali is popular but not the whole Indonesia.
Malaysia is often skipped and together with Brunei, are the most unknown. Singapore is more popular with business travels, expats and transits I think.
Malaysia showed high number of tourist arrivals but mainly from neighbouring Indonesian (relatives, medical tourism), Singaporean (for weekend getaway) and maybe a cheaper destination for Middle-Eastern Muslim travelers (halal food availability).

I think it's just a matter of time.. Thailand has been in the tourist game for a long time. There will be more Siargao island models popping-up and it will all then be game over! To lure tourist, PI has to have competitive prices, selections, quality, and that could apply to everything food, tourist spots, activities, etc, and it seems like Siargao already have all these qualities, and that's why it's been a success. Palawan would be a good candidate, it's 1000 times bigger than Siargao, but they just have to get their shit together.

Malaysian need to be more open. We love to condemn about everything and that scares the foreign tourists. Recent example, the Thai Hot Guy (which is very famous in Thailand, even for Malaysian) got cancelled due to the noise from the netizen and thats just turn off news for the tourism’s.
