This is what fascinates me the most about all those mad leaders that have been covered on this channel (and those that haven't, obviously). There are always enough followers, for any amount of cruelty, to allow those leaders to go rampant.
They can recruit people in a heartbeat; that's why they are leaders.
This "followers" had nowhere to go, most of them had a terrible childhood turned criminals, they sought an adventure and joining pirate crews somehow gave them a sense of belonging where they would gladly die for it.

I can't believe I missed this episode, read about this guy from a book I got from my grandpa as a kid, you better believe the story about him cutting out a prisoners heart and eating it kind of crushed the romanticized image of pirates that I had as a child.

There is a pirate that is more vicious than L'olonnais (sorry for bad spelling), the name I am thinking of is Zheng yi sao/Ching Shih (same person). I'd love to hear about this pirate.

The Vendee really does have a tie with violence with L'Olonnais and the War in the Vendee during the Revolution. Vendee might make a good Geographics episode as well in order to cover the history of the War there, its an interesting one.

Blackbeard's violence is mostly a myth though - he's not recorded by contemporaries to have killed any captives or been cruel to any crew that surrendered. In fact, most of the Golden Age pirates were pretty tame compared to the earlier Buccaneers from 1650-1690. The simple reason is that the pirates lacked the martial skill, the numbers, and the organization to launch massive attacks like this. No Golden Age pirate (the 1700-1725 period of Edward 'Blackbeard' Teach and Bartholomew 'Black Bart' Roberts) successfully hit a large town. On three separate occasions, the Buccaneers were able to raise armies of around 1500 men and raid entire cities. That's to say nothing of the numerous raids against towns like Marcaibo, similar to the one carried out by L'Olonais and his army of "only" 700.
Roberts does get *some* credit though. He sailed into a harbor in Africa and blockaded the exit, much like Blackbeard had done at Charleston. Roberts demanded ransom be paid by every captain who wished to leave the harbor safely. When they initially refused, Roberts ordered one of the ships at anchor to be burned, with its cargo aboard. That cargo was 300 Africans, shackled in the hold and awaiting transportation to the plantations of the New World.

Probably true... when I was in the navy when we did small boat attack training based they said if Somalia pirates come close take them out .... because they don’t have marcy on you. So you better shoot them before them shoot you. But it didn’t happen because as my ncis agent said the pirates are about messing with a carrier.

Not much is known about him exept the fact that he had a pathological hate against spanish and killed every spaniard he could catch. A few years around 1670 he raged through the carribean and finaly vanished.
I remember reading a book years ago " Rebels and Raiders, The Golden Age of Piracy" I think was the title.
And yes, there were a couple of pirates you never hear mentioned who were outright horrific! Not the usual Blackbeard or Black Bart or Horniegold we're familiar with, though their notoriety was just as genuine, but not likely quite the way popular legend portrayed them.
