Don McLean is a Grammy award honoree, a Songwriter Hall of Fame member, a BBC Lifetime Achievement award recipient, and his smash hit “American Pie” resides in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry and was named by the Recording Industry of America (RIAA) a top 5 song of the 20th Century. A New York native, Don McLean is one of the most revered and respected songwriters in American history. Don McLean’s incredible legacy spans music from virtually every genre including blues, country, folk and of course, pop. In addition to entertaining tens of millions of fans for six decades, Don McLean has influenced a variety of icons in the music world including such notables as George Michael, Madonna, Garth Brooks, Tupac Shakur and Elvis among many others. Don McLean continues to write and tour extensively and in 2021 will mark the 50th anniversary of “American Pie” with a world tour.

Lyricists like Don McLean, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, Gilbert O'Sullivan, and so many others from the 60s did precisely what art is supposed to. It got us thinking and questioning. Still listening 60 years later.

I can say that songs from Madonna or Michael Jackson or any of today's singers havent brought me so much enjoyable. . They had stories to tell, with brilliant music. They bring back memories from my younger days.

Hayes Caryll, Jamie Cullum, Ben Fold, Aimee Mann, Tom Waits, Vic Chesnutt, Bruce Springsteen, Stephin Merritt, Sufjan Stevens, PJ Harvey, Jeff Tweedy, Nanci Griffith, David Dondero, Regina Spektor, Et al. prove my theory and position that the genius of songwriting has never been stronger, intelligent, or poignant. But, you have to actually get off of your ass and listen to these artists in order to discover this yourself.

Love the orchestra ... every tone so smooth and elegant. The harp introduction at the start lifts the song from the very beginning. And the piano ends this song magically. Life is perfect for a little while. Thank you.

An accurate observation. I guess this is the way the song matured with him over the years. He controls it so elegantly. The rhythm is perfect for my ears.

Not only a genius in composing his music but also many hits. This is one of my favourites but I do wish artists would stick to the original version of songs. Anyway, that's just my two cents worth is all.

Never understood why Don slowed this down for the second recording he did of it. This version is even more bizarre as he seems to always be a bar behind in the vocals to the chord changes. Still, it's a brilliant song :)
