  • Motorcycle riding the Three Twisted Sisters in the Hill country of Texas.
    Do you want to ride the gnarliest roads that the state of Texas has to offer? Looking for winding roads? Sweeping curves? Roller coaster dips? Spectacular scenery?
    Then it’s time for you to head on out to the Hill Country and ride the Three Twisted Sisters - Ranch Road (RR) 335, RR 336 and RR 337 - all paved two-lane roads set in the backdrop of Texas scenery as good as it gets - clear winding rivers, roads that buck and twist and million dollar views spreading near and far. Hands down, this 100-mile loop is, without a doubt, among the best, most challenging motorcycle roads in the state of Texas.
    In addition we went tent camping in Garner State Park and watched millions of bat swirl out from the Frio Bat Cave.

    Yes, that white, chalky, gritty, slippery stuff is ground-up limestone. It is very slippery, almost like riding on graphite, at times. It's a relatively soft rock & erodes easily with exposure to the elements. Gotta watch out for it here in Texas. It's all over the place, especially in the Hill Country.

    I'm a native Texan living in AZ.. Have ridden the Three Sisters years back and they are as challenging as the mountain twisties in the AZ mountains. As a kid we pretty much lived at Garner State Park in the summer. You two are making me home sick.

    We did this about 3 yrs ago & it was the best trip. Street tacos & great sites. Wish I could attach a still shot photo but not that advanced. Love revisiting. Actually late catching up on your site. We likely went the year before you. Just loved it
    We did it during Covid so didn’t get any tours except a cave.

    Glad you learned hoe to pronounce Leaky. I can't imagine pulling a trailer on the sisters. The up and down road makes me seasick. I pulled off to the side of the road on a hill on my way to Garner. With my tent duffle on the pillion, I dragged my leg across the seat and the back rolled off the side stand and fell on me. The highway white stripe was under my waist on top of this hill. I was really afraid of being run over. An RV drove by and offered no help. I extracted myself from under the bike and later discovered that the fall had crushed my air pump.

    I came across your channel while researching for my first motorcycle camping trip. I went to Big Bend National Park from Fort Worth, TX. After 3 days of solo camping from my 2012 Harley Softail, I've determined that motorcycle camping is not for me. Without a trailer, it's really hard to pack everything without feeling overloaded or top heavy. I will live vicariously through your channel. I love your videos. Keep the excellent content coming.

    My wife (Jamie) and I have road many miles in the Hill Country. It is something everyone should do, but after we discovered Arkansas we rode up there more. We lived in the N. Texas area for years. We also love touring on the bike and do a lot of 2up and we are so excited to see another moto camping couple. We travel on one bike and camp so we are pretty good at the packing thing. Really enjoyed the video and we look forward to more videos. Keep up the great work and maybe our paths will cross soon.

    Back when I had my bike, I couldn't believe how squirrely it got when I got on a road they just chip sealed. I thought I was going to loose it. So I know your fear. You redeemed yourself on the tent :-) my mom use to go to AZ every year for winter. I always asked why the desert when toy could have TX. I still wonder why she didn't.

      @@TwoWheelsBigLife they're fine once they pick up the loose stuff, but no good for road bikes while loose. Watching your channel site makes me miss my bike. But in Montana we end up leaving them parked for winter.

    Loose gravel and street tires, never a good combination. After just a day riding the southwest on my Triumph Thunderbird Storm (800#), and my wife on her 1999 Triumph Legend tt (500#), I decided that, the next time, we'd put tires on our bikes with a more aggressive tread that can cope better with gravel, sand, loose dirt, and heavily rutted roads. We rode our street bikes with tires designed for pavement on all of those surfaces and, at times, it was dicey. So, although I haven't researched tires yet, I'm thinking something along the lines of the Dunlop Trailmax or Michelin Anakee's. Here in OH, KY, and IN, where we do most of our riding, we rarely encounter dirt and gravel roads. Dirt and gravel require different techniques for braking and cornering than the relatively smooth pavement we typically ride.

    Stayed at The Historic Leakey in November - I knew it as D'Rose for many years and have spent many happy weekends there. Leakey - you better pronounce it right or they are going to get on you. Pronounced LAKE-E. Your summary of the roads is spot on. Watch fixation in the corners and for gravel/rocks.

    • @TwoWheelsBigLife
      @TwoWheelsBigLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I also have a RoadGlide and am considering pulling a trailer/camper next year when I retire (semi retire). Never pulled a trailer before. I'm concerned about dropping the bike as you did when gravel is in the mix. If you had an option of a different bike,, what would that be ? What's your thought on having a Trike as an option for the trips you've taken so far?

    • @TwoWheelsBigLife
      @TwoWheelsBigLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately that mishap was because i was going to fast into that gravel.. Yes a Trike will be more stable,but i like the lean myself. You just need to be careful and remember you have a trailer. its easy to forget you have a bushtec behind you, because they pull so well

    Always remember to beware of issues in dirt, mud, gravel, etc. Maintain your momentum; so adding throttle may be required at anytime...do NOT allow your bike to have your speed decreased! Also, use LIGHT touch force as you ride in those same conditions! Intentionally or not, tensing your grip on the handle bar can put you on the ground immediately. (Check (motojitsu) pages.)
