  • This video will help you safely remove Crusty Slime from your carpeting. Crusty slime that has been sitting for some time is more difficult to remove than "fresh" slime.
    If you take the time to do it right complete removal is possible on wet cleanable carpeting.
    *shop vac up lose pieces first
    *apply Woolite detergent as show and agitate with a gentle brush
    ( amzn.to/2vMSLFc )
    *spray with 1:1 water-white vinegar solution
    *wet vac up soapy residue
    *repeat as necessary
    *spray with 3% hydrogen peroxide for any staining
    *For more aggressive stain removal try Sally's 20 Volume
    ( amzn.to/3bUjfVW )

    Thanks. You sound like you'd be the type of patient dad who wouldn't get irrationally angry at his kids for getting his carpets stained. Instead, you patiently and gently teach and guide them on how to fix it right up.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial! We had some slime that spilled & I’m embarrassed it took me a year to tackle it. I had to put a washcloth saturated with very hot water on the hard slime first, but then was able to copy this once it had softened. It’s all out. Yay!!!

    I just followed these instructions and I am AMAZED at how well it worked! I had a old slime stain, months old, and I had to rinse with the vinegar solution over and over, but it eventually came out. The use of a shop vac is crucial I believe, as it picked up any liquid and took it away, rather than just spreading it around. Thank you David!

    • @DavidMavilio

      Hi-
      The white vinegar is used to help rinse the detergent and suspended slime away after it separates from the carpet.
      Start by applying the Woolite detergent solution hot....the hotter the detergent the greater chance to break up the slime. Work the detergent into the fibers with a spoon or butter knife. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes then extract using the vinegar solution.
      If it doesn't all come out repeat the process.
      Use peroxide to help remove any food coloring that remains.
      Good luck, keep us posted!!!

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi-
      If the slime is very hard & crusty heat up the detergent solution before allying it to the carpet.
      you can also put a damp cloth on the area then pour hot detergent on it.
      Remember, let the hot detergent stay on the spot for about 10 minutes to help loosen the slime.
      Use the process in the video once the slime has been loosened.
      Repeat the whole process if necessary.
      Good luck :)

      If you don't have a house hold steam cleaner machine you can try softening the slime with a hot wet towel-place the towel on the slime for 5-10 minutes then scrape off the soft slime and use the video for additional info.
      Repeat as necessary.
      Good luck!!!

      Katie M as David said get a towel wet (i used hot water)it lay it on there until it softens and scrape. Then keep repeating. I also used the hand steamer to add additional heat and got a fine tooth comb and gently scraped. Im still working on it but its getting there. Even though it is taking forever it sure beats the cost of laying new carpet and hiring a professional who says they cant guarantee anything. Good luck

    • @DavidMavilio

      Vinegar is used to rinse the carpeting after your detergent has been used to break apart or dissolve the dried slime.
      If you can't use the vinegar then rinse with warm water. Water is not as effective for rinsing detergents but can be used when necessary.
      Good luck

    Hi just wondering if any brand of laundry detergent would work?

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Karla
      It's best to use Woolite. Woolite rinses easily and is an acid detergent which helps prevent yellowing & browning on natural fibers.
      If you use an alkaline detergents make sure you rinse with white vinegar/water solution to help knock down the pH.
      Good Luck!!

    My niece has a glob of putty in her room. I read somewhere else that putting ice cubes in it to get it cold may help to get the main part off. Have you tried this? Do you think it will work or make it worse?

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may work-i don't think it will do any harm
      Try using compressed air in a can (used for cleaning electronics)
      Vacuum lose particles up before using any liquids
      Good Luck & let us know how it turns out :)

    • @athenamikesellable
      @athenamikesellable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We did try it, it worked pretty well until strands of carpet started coming out when we pulled the putty off. I wouldn't reccomend it if you have to pull hard.

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct-If you can't dissolve the putty pulling it will remove carpet tufts.
      After trying the water-based detergents try using rubbing alcohol in a small area.
      If it seems to work apply it using a cloth...do not pour alcohol on the area because it can dissolved the latex backing of the carpet.
      Good Luck

    Hey David, Thanks for the video! I am a landlord and have tenants that just moved out, leaving deposits of gum that was spat out onto the carpet and then walked on for months and slime of various colors everywhere throughout the entire house. The consistency of the slime is so hard that it is one unbendable solid piece and difficult to break apart. At this point, I'm trying to cut it out of the carpet without leaving a hole since this seems to be the only option. Can using this procedure make it worse (as in not working) but then make it softer so that I can't get it out with scissors? I already have to replace the carpet in the backroom because it is white and large stains of pink slime (each approx. 12 x 14 inches) have destroyed it and I was told by more than one carpet cleaning agency that both the red and pink coloration have acid in them that destroys the carpet and gets inside the fibers so it will not come up. Help!!

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Pamela
      We plan on another video soon for just this concern: Old, hardened slime.
      Try this: Instead of Woolite use Sudsy Ammonia and put it in a hot pot (Proctor Silex® Hot Pot in White) dip a terry towel in and place the terry on the slime for 10-15 minutes
      This should soften the slime enough to chip it away the fibers.
      Use a wet/dry vacuum to pull the wet pieces away also.
      *Sudsy ammonia is difficult to rinse out of the carpet.
      Let us know how it turns out.
      Good luck!!

    I always see people recommend vinegar for stains. Idk if i am doing something wrong but vinegar never removes my stains it just leaves a nasty smell for weeks. Is that normal or am i buying the wrong vinegar?

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jennifer-
      White vinegar works very well as a rinse. After detergents are used to loosen soils rinsing with vinegar helps remove soap residue and leaves the fabric or carpet with a good "hand" as well as promotes dye stability (colors won't run).
      Vinegar won't necessarily remove "stains" but can help remove dirt and some sugary spills.
      Also-using vinegar usually ensures that you won't do any harm to the colors even if the original substances isn't removed.
      Smelling for weeks is very unusual-cut it 1:1 with water.
      I hope this helps!!

    i have black hair glue on my carpet that looks just like the carpet in this video...i’ve tried dish soap and acetone, will this work for hardened hair glue that is not waterproof?

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kim-sorry for delayed response:
      Hair glue is not water soluble so this process using Woolite will not work.
      Any laundry soap or dish detergent also won't work.
      Acetone can be dangerous in the wrong hands-please be careful!
      There are petroleum solvents that "might" help but are also dangerous.
      I would contact a professional who knows how to safely clean carpet.
      Good luck-let us know how it turns out!!

    Does it have to be woolite detergent or can it be a different detergent

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nova
      Woolite has proven to be one of the safest products over many years. There are others on the market which can do the job but you must be careful to use a product that will not harm what you are trying to clean. On wool, silk and other natural fibers stick with Woolite. Some synthetics you can try more aggressive detergents or add a small amount of clear or sudsy ammonia to the Woolite. Always make sure to rinse with white vinegar.
      I hope this helps!!

      Dish detergent can be used, but sparingly. Dish detergent is more difficult to rinse and rinsing is very important.
      Laundry detergent is a last resort. There are additives in laundry detergent that can harm carpet fibers.
      Good Luck!!!

      Hi
      Use the same process.
      Make sure to use peroxide as a last step to help with the odor.

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Emily-
      The stronger the detergent and hotter the water the more likely the slime can be removed. But, the greater the risk to the carpet backing.
      Sometimes we use this technique:
      Put a wet, hot hand towel on the slime and leave it for 10-20 minutes then try to lose the slime with a spoon.
      Keep trying this until the "chunky" parts can be removed then add the Woolite solution, agitate it and use wet vacuum to pull up liquid slime.
      It if you want a more aggressive detergent use "sudsy ammonia" instead of Woolite...but ammonia is more difficult to rinse.
      Try the hot wet towel method several times if necessary.
      There are dry cleaning solvents that may also help but these liquids are flammable and dangerous to breathe. I don't recommend using them.
      Good Luck!!

    There is still a horrible stain at the end of this video! Just a tip... Add a time lapse or before and after shot to show that your technique leads to a CLEAN carpet. I’d be more likely to try it. Instead, I have to spend time searching for a more effective tutorial.

    will tide work as the detergent?

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please do not use Tide...or any laundry detergent.
      Most laundry detergents should not be used to clean carpet. Some may work but many have optical brighteners that are made to help clothing look less dingy. These ingredients can damage carpet fibers.
      Use Woolite esp. if the slime is on wool carpeting.
      If you need to be more aggressive on synthetic carpet add a very small amount of ammonia to the Woolite solution and make sure to thoroughly rinse with the white vinegar solution.
      Good Luck...keep us updated!!

      Please don't use Lysol to clean carpeting. Have your parents watch the video and figure out a solution.

    @jessicaswayze4346 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is the actual solution mixture you’re using please and thanks . I have two daughters who love slime and too many spots I gave up on and really want to get it out! If I don’t have Woolite is there a substitute ?

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When using Woolite, mix it according to directions on bottle.
      Usually a cap full per 1/2 gallon of warm water (hot water if the slime is crusty).
      If you don't have Woolite try sudsy amonia but be careful if cleaning any natural fibersb(wool, cotton). Most carpet is synthetic.
      We also use Prochem Fine Fabric Shampoo
      amzn.to/2S3HN6h for delicate fibers (upholstery).
      Rinsing with All fiber rinse is great if you are dealing with wool fibers amzn.to/2wCno0A
      BTW

    Does any detergent work!

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi-
      We prefer Woolite for most residential uses. Woolite is acidic which makes the detergent easier to rinse and prevents browning.
      If you need a more aggressive solution heat the detergent or apply it multiple times.
      Good Luck!

  • @hotrodjason

    What do you mix the wollite with? Water? What ratio? He said mix according to directions but I can’t find it anywhere

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jason-
      Usually the directions are on the Woolite container-
      We recommend 2 ounces per half gallon of water.
      Mix into a froth and use the foam on the slime.
      Some people make the mixture more concentrated but this will make the solution harder to rinse out of the carpet.
      Good Luck!!

      @DavidMavilio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi
      Try using the same techniques but make the water/detergent solution hotter......allow the solution to remain on the slime longer.
      Doing this multiple times may be necessary.
      Coming soon: A video using more heat and alternative detergents for imbedded slime.

    Does this process work on car upholstery as well?

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      This process can work on auto upholstery as well as residential upholstered furniture that is "wet" cleanable.
      With cars make sure to thoroughly rinse the area and do not close the windows until the upholstery has completely dried.
      Good Luck!

    Can I use something instead of hydrogen peroxide

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      Hydrogen peroxide is a relatively safe oxygen bleach. There are stronger oxygen bleaches but be careful not to bleach the color out of the carpeting. Sally's beauty supply stores carry 20, 30 & 40 volume peroxides........but be careful!!!

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear it didn't work.
      As we always say: Don't be too aggressive with the spot/stain removal.
      Call a professional in your area who might be able to "patch" the area with the slime.
      Good Luck!

    What about crusty slime in a child's hair? My 3 year old autistic son somehow managed to sleep on his brothers new slime. He has very thick curly hair and it's matted in there. Idk how I'm going to pull this off. He CANNOT stand water anywhere near his face. This is going to be about as much fun as trying to wrestle a grizzly bear. Y'all remember me in your prayers! 😳

    Is a vacuum necessary?

    • @DavidMavilio
      @DavidMavilio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mari....The vacuum is necessary so that the soap residue and loosened slime can be pull out of the carpet. Also-when using the rinse, without the vacuum the carpet would be left with too much water. Make sure to use a vacuum that is "wet" capable
      Good Luck!!

      Hello,
      You may have to leave the soap solution on the area longer and use hotter water. Keep gently agitating the area as you flush.
      A stronger detergent may be useful but make sure it is safe for the carpet.
      Good Luck
