I've been binge watching your videos for about a week now and I love the way you treat your birds and especially your instructional videos like this one! You clearly explain everything in a clear and calm way and give points/tips for first time bird owners. I haven't had a bird in a long while but Im working on convincing my mom to let me get one and I appreciate all of the different types of informational videos you have!! 💖💖
Xashley Santos I really hope you're able to get a bird! I got my little parrotlet only a month or so ago and she's the sweetest thing, and such an awesome companion 😊
You make the MOST helpful and clear bird training tutorials on you tube BY FAR! Good Job Girl! Thank you soo much or the time it takes you to make these videos.!
Your tutorials are by far the best and most concise I have encountered online. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have such amore wonderful relationship with my beautiful little birds because of your tutorials!! I recommend Your videos ALL the time on my facebook bird groups!!
My cockatiel completely skipped the part about doing this in baby steps and is picking up recalling pretty quick, but of course the second she has to perform in front of someone she resorts to sitting there singing to them instead 😄
Amazing.. i have 2 baby budgies who are 2 and 4 weeks old, they are so lovely and I can't wait until they wean and start teaching them how to be independent and learn tricks ^_^ Love your videos so much, keep up the great work and welcome back to youtube love.
Also, the click or spoken word delivered at the moment of the desired behavior bridges the gap between the desired behavior and delivery of reward, so the bird is not confused about what it is being rewarded for.
Hey there, I only just found your channel but I am about to start my own as I begin training my Red Tailed Black Cockatoo :-) 7 months old, still a baby, but your videos are SO helpful, I will mention you in them when I put them up thank you so much
Thank you for this video! My bird will not go on her training perch or her play stand. I got her a new play stand to see if she likes that one better but today we tried the training perch-every time I put my arm or hand near the perch she would fly away. We tried this 3 or 4 times. The last time she let me rest my arm on the perch with her on my arm. This was the closest she would get to it. I hope I can help her learn to do this! She really doesn’t seem happy about it.
My bird does that all the time lol! When you start a training session they're so eager to do tricks to get treats that they start trying anyone of them. They're like "Hey look! I'm a good bird!"
Mia knows many tricks when she pointed her finger down she do the hanging trick and throughout the video she was looking at her hand watch her other video of tricks you will understand
thanks for the wonderful vid first up. My question is: my African grey knows how to step up, but when I try to get him to step up, he doesn't because he is on his play stand. Even when I'm using the target stick. He follows The target stick perfectly but if my hand is in front of the stick he won't step up to go over and touch, after that he puts his head down as to get a head scratch.. any suggestion? :)
Keep asking him to step up and only reward him when he does. If his play stand is in the way then get him to perch somewhere else and ask him to step up.
My bird knows how to step up but she won't do it when my hand isn't touching her/extremely close to her. As soon as I move my hand a little bit away, she becomes uninterested. Any suggestions?
Hey cosmic for your bird I have been doing tons and tons of research (I'm getting a conure in 3mo) what I have heard and understood if you put your 2 fingers at the chest and tell them to step up and they do reward them. It might be a few sessions of this, but gradually add flock talk states take your hand a bit further away and repeat the command if the bird is confused you might have gone too fast session wise and might have to being your hand a bit close repeating the command and rewarding. Flock talk also has stated you can use a pointer to help aid in teaching the bird then use a clicker so they know they did good. The pointer in theory could be pointed to your finger with your other hand if the bird follows treat them she had another video on clicker training you can check out. Hope this made sense and have a great day^^
Weird thing is my parrotlet is getting to be a strong flyer, and she's confident in flying toward the perch, but she will not go further than a hop to get to my finger.
Thank you for your very informative video. I have a quaker parrot. Has never learned to step up on stick and bites me very hard on the hand. I try to keep my hand there with flat side facing him but somehow manages to get me. Im on a blood thinner and it bleeds forever. He will once i get him out and away from the area, I can pet and preen him. Im frustrated because I have had other birds who stick and finger trained very well. Any other ideas
This is really interesting. I was trying to teach my bird to target a target stick, but the intelligent little monster decided to skip that point and start using it at the station. I’m not sure how I can encourage them to use the beak to follow the target stick when all they want to do is land on it. I would progress onto stationing, and I’m even tempted to skip targeting and just use the treat method and go straight to doing this, but I do want them to learn to target for other tricks.
That's on option or you can just say 'Yes' people just use a clicker as it's a quicker response time to say the bird has done the right thing than speaking.
If I don't have some of that equipment available, can I click with my mouth or snap my fingers with my other hand and replace the porch with something like a chair?
Totally! Whatever sound you choose to make just ensure you’re able to make it consistent in volume and tone and isn’t something you’d use in another context as to avoid confusion. Back of a chair would work great!
@Flock-Talk alright thanks, but I ran into a problem. You see, his wing was clipped when we got him but I decided to let it grow, and Now he only flies of he either gets scared, if he is close to something he is scared of, or, on rare occasions, he just does it randomly. And what makes it even more confusing for me is that he is willing to jump a bit far to get from my hand or any other object to my shoulder, but he will only try to get from the chair to my hand if my hand is close enough for him to step on it, any idea on how to progress further?
how do you train your bird to trust you bringing them out of the cage? my bird will come out and eat of my hand but then wants back in there cage. I put them back but it's the same amount of time out of the cage.
Kenlee Wells i saw a video that said that if you stick your hand in the cage the bird will think its a predetor and may die of shock I saw a video that got a bird used to a hand by using a long stemmed treat and decreased the distancw from food to hand over time
Can you skip the stick stage by teaching them to target your finger from the start. I taught my dog to target my hand. I'm getting a baby hand raised quaker next week
Technically speaking yes that’s an option, the reason we go for the stick is because it’s often less scary than a grabby hand to a lot of birds so it’s an easy way to start building trust. And birds like to be nibbly so teaching them to nibble an object won’t cause harm whereas teaching them that biting your finger could result in them drawing blood if they get overstimulated down the road. Dog hand targets work because you’re targeting a closed mouth/ nose, with birds you’re targeting the tongue which can result in some nasty bites!
I'm just using a chopstick, as long as it's made of a non-toxic material it doesn't really matter what kind of stick you use. There is a target training tutorial on the page that'll give you more info on that!
I've had my first parakeet/budgie for atleast 3 years now he is hand trained and he knows how to kiss and target my hand with his beak, is this enough training for me to do this trick with him or does he need to learn something else thanks
Help! My parakeet steps up and then immediately steps off or flys off. I ask him to step up he does and steps off right away. Also could you please show me your hand positioning for holding your clicker, treat and target stick. I've been having trouble coordinating it all. Thank you!
What should I do if my bird is afraid of the target stick that I am using? I would love to use target training but he is afraid of the chopstick. Help please.
Are you bird’s flight feathers clipped/trimmed or or they natural. And if your bird’s flight feathers are trimmed are you able to teach this to them and have them go farther distance?
my cockatiel has started to learn that when i hold my hand out like a perch, i'm asking him to come over to me, and he will come and land on my hand. is it okay to "teach" him to "recall" like this before properly teaching him to station and recall?
No glue necessary! If you buy the PVC (have them cut it into the size you want) and the corresponding PVC couplings, they fit snugly enough to not need any glue.

I haven’t watched you in so long. Your still the best birdtuber
Oh my god Im so happy! Today my lovebird finally station without target stick! Onwards to more tricks i hope :)
What is a clicker and what does it mean?
Alysha Price the clicker is another sign for congratulating the bird after it has done something good or a trick. It's just like saying good boy
Ok thank u
Alysha Price yeh
Also, the click or spoken word delivered at the moment of the desired behavior bridges the gap between the desired behavior and delivery of reward, so the bird is not confused about what it is being rewarded for.
Th clicker is to reward them telling them they re doing the right thing then give them a treat and so they also know when to stop
Great video! Thanks for this! Question, what do you use for treats?
Thanks so much! I give some things a try.
Flock-Talk is it okay to use the seeds from the pet store as a treat
I love your training methods and your bird!!!
Lol it looks like Zeeby likes running in circles around her perch. That was too cute. It made my heart melt
You're really good at teaching your baby. :) I'm learning a lot..

its so cute how the bird starts doing tricks at 6:09 to get treats

top of the cage maybe
The one dislike is the bird that couldn't figure out where the line button.

Layla Ayyashi it's so cute

Thank you for an informative video! Can I train two lovebirds this at the same time? ❤️
My two budgies are 2 months old, Can i still train Them this?
Yes, you can. You can actually teach a bird this trick no matter their age unless they're too old or less active(I think)
My bird knows how to step up but she won't do it when my hand isn't touching her/extremely close to her. As soon as I move my hand a little bit away, she becomes uninterested. Any suggestions?

That sounds like a safe bet, yeah
what should I give as a treat for a Quaker parrot?
Whatever he likes best!

Which feed did u give when tranning???????
how do you train your bird to trust you bringing them out of the cage? my bird will come out and eat of my hand but then wants back in there cage. I put them back but it's the same amount of time out of the cage.
Haylie Sullivan stick your hand in the cage throughout the day to get your bird used to being around and standing on your hand :)
Kenlee Wells i saw a video that said that if you stick your hand in the cage the bird will think its a predetor and may die of shock

Your videos are amazing thank you! From what age do you suggest commencing those exercises? (For parrotlet) thank you
When you train birds is it good train one by one or all same time
Its better to train them one by one so that they will stay focused during their training session.
What is that she using to click?

Use the treat your bird likes best.
Can I do this with a parakeet also?

my cockatiel has started to learn that when i hold my hand out like a perch, i'm asking him to come over to me, and he will come and land on my hand. is it okay to "teach" him to "recall" like this before properly teaching him to station and recall?
I have a problem with my lovebird!! When I approach him to give him a treat he viciously bites me! What should I do??
Konstantinos Kalatzis put your hand slowly and talk in a soft voice with him or her
Amira Dawi thank you so much for helping!!! I am definitely going to try it!!
Where can we get a target stick
Mohamad Zukan a small wooden dowl works!
Mohamad Zukan you can use a chopstick
How long do you usually have training sessions last so the birds don't get exhausted or frustrated from constant repetition?
Mackenzie Robinson I've heard several times that between 10-15 minutes is the best length of time to start with :)
Do you have your bird clipped? If so, if i want to do these tricks with my bird should i clip him?
I am assuming you made your perches? what did you Use? (mainly what's wrapped around the pipe)
Lyndsay Kang PVC, perhaps glue, and vet wrap. vet wrap is definitely worth having around. look it up! :)
No glue necessary! If you buy the PVC (have them cut it into the size you want) and the corresponding PVC couplings, they fit snugly enough to not need any glue.
Lyndsay Kang awesome!

Put the food stick thing in your shoulder and he should go to your shoulder
