I forgot that Ash basically had every bird you found at the beginning of the games until you mentioned howbmany flying rypes he had
the only exceptions is Alola and Galar birds.
in Alola, he has rowlet.
He didn't journey to Galar for a gym challenge, so he didnt catch rookidie.
but why does flying types dominate? other than the early birds?
Look at his Kalos team.
Smogonbird, Hawlucha and Noivern are all flying types.
I would probably think it's either flying or fighting. Ash is all about unpredictability and speedy raw power. Flying types usually have both in the anime

He never caught haunter, haunter became his friend and just tagged along. Otherwise, if haunter was caught ash could put him back in his pokeball and he would obey him more
