  • In this episode, I am visiting another volcano in Costa Rica: the Poas volcano. I'm only allowed to stay here for 20 minutes as there are potential toxic gases that you can't be exposed for, for too long. What an incredible sight!

      When I was in Grenada were near a volcanic area that was near a river you can smell the bad gases ( SO2 and CO2) there was also dead animals that walked into area when the wind was blowing wrong way.

    I used to see bioluminescence when we night scuba dived in Alaska. Very cool! Once, there was so much that it completely encased us as we moved through the water and left a long path, like a contrail, behind us. For those not familiar with it, you have to agitate the water for it to illuminate. Another fantastic video. Thanks Noraly, for showing us parts of the world many of us will never see.

    • @benw1620

      Wow nice! Any idea how well an underwater gopro would capture bioluminescence?

    • @billkipper3264
      @billkipper3264 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, if it's like my example above I can't see how you couldn't capture it on a gopro. However, the intensity level of bioluminescence can be radically different from day to day.

    • @billkipper3264
      @billkipper3264 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I seem to recall that bioluminescence is also more prevalent in cold water as well.

    • @billkipper3264
      @billkipper3264 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Grant Jones I didn't say you wouldn't have it in warm water. I said I seem to recall it's more prevalent in cold water. I could be wrong. That's why I didn't make a definitive statement. I know that personally I've only ever seen it in cold water.

    I spent a lot of time on ships in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, we’d see often bioluminescence in the bow and stern wake. On a dark night it was amazing. Sometimes porpoise would swim near the ship, surf in the bow wake, at night they looked like white ghosts torpedoes near the surface. Your videos are wonderful, I’ve enjoyed them all.

    • @nowhereman7398

      Not to be droll, but I've only seen it so far in the toilet of a sailboat. We sailed across SF bay to Sausalito for the night. And the wife of the captain, made sure I noticed it. I also recollect, that one of the sailing channels caught dolphins in it. Although hard to film, I remember thinking they caught it pretty good.

    • @robertphillips93
      @robertphillips93 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Low light, calm seas, and a group of dolphins near Monterey Bay to shepard the crew of a motorless sailboat north through the dark fog -- only the best CGI could come close to the otherworldly visuals, but it would still fall short of the experience!

    Fun fact, Jim Lovell, when he was flying jets in the Navy, once use the bioluminescent algae that got activated by the passage of his carrier, to find his way back to the carrier when his plan was damaged. This was in 1953.

    • @richardmourdock2719

    Back in 2017 I took the whole coastal road on the peninsula by 4x4.
    And people where really amazed all the time, going “wow, you took the bad road!?” Haha
    It it’s a beautiful trip through lots of small villages and it’s very doable when you don’t have to be anywhere in a rush.
    That goes for the whole of Costa Rica btw. Pura Vida!

    Growing up back east in CT in the USA we used to regularly enjoy bioluminescence along the coastline watching the waves light up and splashing with our feet in the water to make it glow that blue green light, it truly is magical. We also used to enjoy fireflies lighting our way on summer nights. I’m no longer back east and I’m unsure if either phenomenon exists anymore ..thanks for the time traveling inspired memory xo

    Bioluminesence can be seen in Holland too! In summer and early autumn when the weather is right the sea lights up due millions of plankton... It's like millions of fireflies in the sea. Once I lived there and did shrimp fishing with my brothers near the beach for the fun of it.. and north sea shrimps are delicious. When the sea lighted up, we were a bit disappointed, since the shrimps could see the net approaching and many escaped....

    When I took that ferry to where you're headed I was surprised to see huge patches of floating trash all over the area. This is back in 2004. It was also the rainy season. Many of the roads weren't passable back then on that peninsula. Bummer you had to miss the entire southern pacific coast. So much to see.

      Kind of, because they concentrate in the center and north side of the country, in the southern part we have no volcanos and no even in the coast
      But also not all of them are like real volcanos, most of them are similar to a mountain, no as Turrialba Volcano

    Just a few people know this: Arenal, Poas and Irazú volcanoes have the same geometrical distribution as the pyramids of Giza. Even the proportions of height are similar, the only for match perfectively is for the Poas to have a height of 3800 msnm.

    The bioluminescence in Paquera is absolutely magical. I wasn't able to capture it either because we were in full darkness, so when telling other people it's hard to convey just how mind bending that experience is. Honestly I didn't have high expectations but now I go about life telling everyone to add it to their bucket list 😂
