The narrator takes you through her three generations of her family history from her grandmother, mother to herself in the backdrop of a changing China. Not only was it eye opening to discover Chinese history but it was so heart breaking to hear about some of the things that actually happened. The Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld!! He was my saving grace author in middle and high school, and creates such vivid scenes and realities for the characters he creates. One of my favorite books is Nella Larsen's 'Passing"
The book revolves around the experience of being half black/half white in 1920s New York when there was still segregation (and obviously deep racism). The story is about two women who are both biracial. One of them lives as a black woman and the other "passes" as white. The second woman even marries a white guy who has no idea she is half black. The book was extremely seminal to me as I am also biracial and could relate to the issues presented about how race is a societal invention that is meant to categorize and divide humans. It brought to light the notion of racial fluidity and the struggles of internal identity that mixed race people face.
I feel like I should also warn that the book has a sad ending :(
But definitely worth reading. It's also really short so you can read it in a day!

How do you do that Jen? How do you manage to read while socializing, while hanging out with friends and your boyfriend, visiting your parents and flying all over the world as well as filming, editing and socializing with fans? I'm so fascinated that you even manage to read all the time. I'm only attending university and am doing almost the things that you do, but i can't manage to find time to read otherwise i would be lacking of sleep or time for anything else...

I love The Catcher in the Rye! It's such a unique Bildungsroman/coming of age story. Definitely had an impact on me, although I know it's very hit or miss with a lot of people.
I also loved We Were Liars. That book absolutely destroyed me - I've never been hit so hard by a price of writing. An incredible story about family and love and finding yourself.
Thank you for this video Jenn! It was very refreshing :)

    • @KathyReyes612

I'd have to agree with Catcher In The Rye. It's really a mix of character pieces strewn together to tell a story. At first read, people don't understand Holden's train of thought, but after reading it with a critical and analytical brain, it's an earnest narrative. There's so much powerful symbolism in this book that it garnered me to go to NYC when I was 18 and through this book I fell in love with that city.

You should read "The Glass Castle" it's about a poor family, they are constantly moving from place to place because they can't afford staying in one spot. There's just many things that happens along their journey. I've read the book twice and seen the movie 3 times. It's an amazing story you should look into it.

I know this is not a book reccomendations but there is a tv show called 3% on netflix. it talks about a dystopian world in which once you reach of age you can go through the process. the top 3% makes it through the process and can escape the inland (full of poverty) and go to the off shore in which is supposed to be amazing. its really good and i def reccomend this

Hi Jenny, today I met you for the first time. I have read many books in your list, and really loved them, such as The portrait of Dorian Gray, 1984 or Kafka on the shore. I would like to recommend some of my favourites one whose style is a bit different from those you talked about, but I think they are really interesting:
    - The miserables: this is probably my favourite one. Maybe you have watched the movie but the reading experience is very pleasant, it is so well written and it describes so well the difficulties of so many people and how they struggle to survive. It makes you aware of how luck we are if living in the societies we live, and lets you thinking about those societies where people doesn't have enough for a living and how could you help them. It can be sometimes a bit hard to read, but I think it's worth the while.
    - Gone with the Wind: a brilliant historical book which story runs in the context of the American Civil War and the problems in a southern state where black people still works as slave while in the north they are already being freed. It's a long book but very interesting.
    - Dracula: a very thrilling and catchy book, many of us know about Dracula and vampires but never read the original story. It takes place in the Victorian era in England, it's written in a diary and letter style, which gives you the point of view of many of the characters in the story, so you can feel they way they feel.
I could continue but these ones are enough for now haha.
Thank you very much for your recommendations, I will definitely read the ones I haven't read yet.
    Regards!

    1. Harry Potter series (it has been my childhood favorite)
    2. The Great Gatsby - the writing is beautiful! I've read it 3 times just because I'm in love with the writing
    3. Till We Have Faces - Cupid and Psyche's love story through her sister's (Orual) perspective. The writing is pretty and there's a lot to learn from someone who is considered an ugly and flawed human compared to her beautiful sister and the godly being Cupid
    4. Howl's Moving Castle - so much fun with all the characters

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. It's about Ancient Toltec knowledge of making your life less complicated. There are 4 agreements you should make to yourself that are so simple and yet to implement them in your life is difficult & it makes you realize that most of the times we create the drama in our lives. It was a life changer for me, I recommend it to everyone.

Have you also read Farenheit 451? Its also dystopian but in a future where there are no books/ books are illegal
Also Murakami has said before that everything in Kafka is connected somehow, and if you read it well enough you'll be able to get the connections!

*Brave New World. One of my favorites for sure! They are somewhat similar in that there are totalitarian regimes in place. But in Brave New World, people are given what they want (sex, drugs, etc) and are complacent, whereas in 1984 they are deprived. It's an interesting comparison.

If you're looking for another good non-fiction read, then you should check out Malcom Gladwell! I read "Outliers: The Story of Success" 4 years ago in 9th grade for summer reading and I just really enjoyed how he took us through his journey of learning why certain groups of people end up being more successful than others. For example: students born in January are more well off in sports and school since they're more developed compared to their counterparts born in December, and East Asians are more hardworking compared to their Europeans counterparts because eastern farmers would work year round by planting in the summer and preparing in the winter, whereas their western counterparts couldn't do much in the winter due to different latitudes and intensity of the cold.

I really recommend you to read books written by women of color: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a good start. Her collection of short stories "The Thing Around Your Neck" is just impeccably poignant. Isabel Allende's "The House of Spirit" is also my absolute favorite, just don't go near the movie adaptation. For a non-fiction read, I suggest an investigation journalism by Jenny Nordberg "The Underground Girls of Kabul". Nordberg is not a woman of color, but her story does full justice to what Afghani girls have undergone in their life. Xx

Crazy Rich Asians- Kevin Kwan; it's about exactly what it sounds like and is written with absolutely impeccable wit and humor. the author includes snippets of cantonese that make me laugh because I can understand the implications behind phrases that get lost in translation. I adore the characters, the details, the unexpected flashes of sentiment and even though I'm not crazy or rich I can definitely relate to the 'Asian' part in terms of understanding the cultural motivations behind many of the characters' actions. @Guruthosa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Just a hunch. I feel like it's in a similiar tone as some of the things she likes. It's masterfully written, it's about a man who fails professionally and personally and yet there's still value in his ordinary life that others would consider a failure. I couldn't put it down and in the end I was totally shaken and in tears. It taught me a new perspective, just like The Handmaid's Tale, 1984 or Dorian Gray did. It broadened my horizon for sure. Recommending books is generally tricky but this is one I always do recommend.

omg ive lucid dreamed before but i wanted to train myself to do it too awhile ago! i watched a video and the best trick i think was to develop a habit of noticing details. so like just looking at your hands or the clock every so often. then in your dream, you'll catch yourself doing that habit except your hands will have extra fingers or the clock won't look right. then you'll realize it's a dream!! & tbh i think just thinking about wanting to lucid dream will get you to lucid dream.

when you mentioned 'the five ppl you meet in heaven' i was reminded of the book 'Boo' by Neil Smith. it's from the pov of a young nerdish boy who died, and tells abt his afterlife in a quirky sort of heaven. it's a very lighthearted book af first glance but has darker, sad undertones which moved me a lot.

oh my gosh..... the 5 people you meet in heaven is also one of my favorite books. I really enjoyed it, but didn't find it particularly happy. Was definitely bawling at the end of the book! Great video, and definitely gave me some new books to read!

I am just so amazed that the very first book you mentioned is East of Eden. I am currently reading it and the journey is amazing.
Other than that your general taste pretty much resembles mine, so thanks for this video and extending my tbr list 😊

YES! As soon as you said you love dystopian books I was like "Yes! That's what I like to hear!" And I was gonna recommend 1984 but then you recommended it haha. I also really recommend Fahrenheit 451. And if you like dark books you should really read The Wasp Factory by Ian Banks, it is so dark! I had to read it for English class and everyone in my class was like "it's so weird, it's so creepy" and I was like "I love it!"

Oh and if you haven't heard of it already, you should totally watch Black Mirror! So dark, so interesting! And one of the episodes sounds like Ready Player One

I just finished ready player one, and I loved it. The story and it's plot line are mainly found in Anime and Manga but reading Cline's take on the genre was so refreshing. I loved every part of this book and let me tell you each part had me feeling a different way from paranoia, empathy, and excitement. I can't remember the last time I found myself immersed into a book. Thank you so much for introducing this book back in one of your monthly favourites and again for mentioning it on this video, I would not have found it if not for your videos!
