Lang Lang I am deeply grateful to you for re-inspiring me back to piano playing, for your indepth understanding and dedication to music but also to your attitude to life. Grazie
This piece has become one of my all time favorites over this past year. I play it almost everyday and sometimes makes me tear up when I'm sad. Given how old it is and the story behind it during that time during Liszt's life; I always end up thinking about my Grandma (who introduced me to piano a couple of years ago) and can't wait to see her this Thanksgiving. At the same time, I imagine Liszt and her sitting on either side of me when I play this. It really is a consolation... P.S. Lang Lang puts his heart and gut when he plays this and I feel that.
It might be something to do with the fact his good friend Chopin died just before he composed this. Consolation No. 3 was written as a tribute to Chopin and was an interpretation of his Nocturne Op. 27 No. 2 which is in the same key D-Flat major with a similar arpeggio in the left hand and starts with the same F (major third) note. I'm not entirely sure if this is what Andrew Chalk here is reffering to however I'm sure Liszt would have been upset that his inspirational and equally talented friend had gone from this world. Pianists/composers like that don't come about too often
Lang Lang plays this composition with great virtuosity; who cares about his grimaces and faces; so did Glenn Gould, and so do many current virtuosos like David Fray, Andre Watts, and others. It's his prerogative and his personal expression. He's in a rapture in his music. It's shallow to criticize him for that.
I love any expression. I never totally understood it until I picked up more difficult pieces and as I attempt to play them I feel myself on the verge of tears. So, now I totally understand it.
You're correct that it is his personal prerogative but his antics are also disconcerting to many who find the actions distracting to the music which is generally outstanding. I personally prefer not to watch him play. Watching most other concert pianists makes a positive contribution to a performance.
Some of his dynamic choices are a bit strange but what i cant deny is how he ends this piece. The last few chords are so emotional especially the last twowhich i feel are perfect dynamics and phrasing wise
I enjoyed this, just as I have enjoyed other performances of Lang Lang. I find his playing very sensitive and deeply moving. Many thanks for posting. Best wishes.
That one guy in the background of the orchestra 😂 hes feeling it just as much as me 😂 Always love to come back to this video and watch this guy enjoy such an masterpiece played by lang lang ❤
yep and it is a hommage and is meant to be played chopin style not rubato like langlang did . he butchered it . chopin hated rubato and liszt disagreed but as a hommage he made a piece meant to be played in chopins standards
Why does everyone think that Lang Lang's faces are bad / fake? Music is an emotion and any piano player can tell you it is much easier to convey emotions in your music if you make yourself feel that emotion and become immersed in it; showing emotion on your face helps this process.
and like declan said he finds beauty in every single beautiful majestic note and simply cant contain the emotions he is feeling. I would if i was playing that myself
"Passions, violent or not, may never be expressed to the point of revulsion; even in the most frightening situation music must never offend the ear but must even then offer enjoyment, i.e. must always remain music." -- W.A.Mozart
sorry but i just watched the horowitz version of this and have to say it was nothing compared to lang langs. no visible emotion to add to the beauty of what you're hearing. The dynamic contrast and phrasing was no where near as expressive as lang lang. The way lang lang ends this piece is simply marvellous. I really wish people would stop the negative press on him, and why they dont get it
nothing to do! I did not sympatize with his body enfatic expression but I relistened closing eyes and i have to admit his interpretation is one of the best
wonderful performance, really"!!!!!!! but still cant laugh a bit when i see lang lang faces XD like gould humming, its hilarious when such things cant be stopped by a performer :) it just become a part of the performance
He is working that melody. It seems like he is feeling it. Is there something wrong with the video? This was fairly recent. This is Valentines Day 2012. Franz Liszt was quite a character. I love his music. Good performance Lang Lang.
Lang Lang is an extrovert. I saw him being interviewed in Chinese, and he never stopped talking and laughing away. I guess that's why he must have his facial expressions while immersing himself into the music, or maybe that's how he remembers the tempo, coda etc.. Some people say he showed-off, I beg to differ and say that's just his style. Anyway, I love his way of playing piano, much more exciting and commucative. I don't like to watch a still man with a stern-face playing piano, period!
The most delicate rendition I've heard... his control of the keys is incredible!
This is absolutely magnificent!!! He's the one who truly felt that piece of music
It is a gift to have such heavenly sounds flowing through one's fingertips, truly. His expression only emphasizes this.
I really love this piece and performed by Lang Lang , it's more beautiful!!

I love any expression. I never totally understood it until I picked up more difficult pieces and as I attempt to play them I feel myself on the verge of tears. So, now I totally understand it.
Including Liszt

Liszt at the age of Lang was seating straight right on the piano
Close the eyes and open the ears😊
i don't think there's a greater pianist in the world right now....truly gifted in every way...bravo!
Beautiful. I am hooked now on Franz Liszt. Thanks Lang Lang.
Some of his dynamic choices are a bit strange but what i cant deny is how he ends this piece. The last few chords are so emotional especially the last twowhich i feel are perfect dynamics and phrasing wise
Is that criticize?
I get chills every time I hear this piece. It was the music for my first solo on pointe at age 8❤🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This is my forever favourite piece of music, by LangLang.
I enjoyed this, just as I have enjoyed other performances of Lang Lang. I find his playing very sensitive and deeply moving. Many thanks for posting. Best wishes.
Thank you so much for sharing this beauty with us:)
Very emotional and beautiful piano play reach to my heart.
Great!
I can’t play fast and smooth like Lang Lang. The polyrhythms runs are tricky. This piece is a piece of cake for him. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Best version I've heard... Fantastic pedal work; so many versions are muddy
Agreed. It's really superb.
You are all definately correct
He is simply a genius. Wonderful touch.
As Bach once said: "Music is very simple, all you need to do is hit the right note at the right time..."
River Rivenburg lol I suppose it’s true for a harpsichord
This is for harpsichord haha not piano, piano requires much more touch
@@nathanielwoodbury2692 😂😂😂😂😂
Langlang, amazing piano player
Amazing pianist maybe
Magnifique, une caresse pour le cœur 🎶💓🎶
Una belleza...precioso sentimiento...
So beautifully sensitive
Love it
So lovely & tender!
Fantastic !
I saw him perform this as an "encore" for a Beethoven piano concerto he played last week. He really is quite a special talent.
Quel silence dans le Royal Albert Hall durant cette consolation ! De toute beauté !
lang lang playing consolation number three he is just phenomenal x
Impressionnant, bravo!
I love his music!!!!
this is the best interpretation i ve heard, thanks for posting!!
Listen to Horowitz.
That one guy in the background of the orchestra 😂 hes feeling it just as much as me 😂
Always love to come back to this video and watch this guy enjoy such an masterpiece played by lang lang ❤
I believe this is the piece Liszt wrote on hearing that his friend Frederick Chopin had died in Paris
yep and it is a hommage and is meant to be played chopin style not rubato like langlang did . he butchered it . chopin hated rubato and liszt disagreed but as a hommage he made a piece meant to be played in chopins standards

mikecmtong yes I defiantly agree. I play piano and my faces are ridiculous 😂 but I'm expressing myself

Sublime !!!!
Im not a huge fan of lang lang but this is really nice, great playing. :)
1:10 why triple forte?
I didnt like that either...but i loved the way he ended this its just perfect particularly the last 4 or so chords

Bravooo!
I got this VIP piano learning thing with Lang Lang picture on it

In answer to why he is laughing, if you see even his interviews, Lang Lang has a lot of joy in his work and music. I don't think he could withhold it

I agree lang lang is the best
yea rafael...the way he closes this piece (the last two chords are immense. pure emotion those last two couldnt take my eyes of the vid
I prefer Horowitz to Lang Lang, but LL still gives a solid performance.
nothing to do! I did not sympatize with his body enfatic expression but I relistened closing eyes and i have to admit his interpretation is one of the best
yuuup.
Umberto Gatti exquisitely sensitive

Gould humming is so charming! He’s so into it, it’s like he’s playing for himself and not some critical snob

Супер ЗАМЕЧАТЕЛЬНО!!!
Surprised nobody's mentioned the mouse cursor sitting on the video the whole time lmao.
Ha-ha! It was discussed amusingly a year ago ago, Keyshia.
Or the slow framerate in the video
You can thank the BBC for that.
Прекрасно !!
K I think I’ve been playing it too slow lol.
Ayham Shaheed no dude, lang lang play this his style, most of people play slow actually
Me too
Everyone plays it the same (sheet music wise) but you can add your own touch or style to it, doesn’t have to be exactly the same as him.
@@jefferycampbellpianobandit5521 oh hey Jeff
Lang Lang is known to play his style even if it wasn't the composer's intentions lol. It's nice tho
did you see the mouse screen? LOL
You're welcome - sorry for the delay in acknowledging your comment.
u r so right :D
I may detest his faces, but when I close my eyes, I can hear great performances
