Barbara Stanwyck was great in everything she did, here she is back to her burlesque roots long after being a box office star,Love her and love this playful movie . Color makes it new .
@CCC Thanks for presenting this gem. Very atmospheric which may cause modern day critics and viewers to dismiss it as an outdated flick. Miss Stanwyck was a true star - highly versatile, great dancer (she danced for Flo Ziegfield), good actress, delivered her lines and expressed emotion very well. She dominated the movie but the supporting cast added much to it. The women had all the serious parts and the men mostly had comic roles. Good balance come to think of it. Look forward to your next presentation.
This is the eighth or ninth time I have watched this REALLY excellent film and I ALWAYS enjoy it immensely!!!! I am a retired Burlesque performer from Detroit, Michigan and my heyday was in the 1980's and I am ALWAYS grateful to have a romp down memory lane in such exquisite authenticity!!! It was sooo similar to the producers depiction of the late, great era of Broadway n Burlesque that it makes me ever so entrenched in the excitement, humour, camaraderie n gruesome competition that made daily life a thrill to be a part of!!! LOVE it to Death, as Alice Cooper would have said so succinctly!!! Thanks again for making this winner of a film available to me,!!!!
I absolutely enjoyed this film. All the twists and turns. I was a bit pissed of when that man Louie was beating on that girl and all they did was cover it up with music and dancing. But we've come a long way baby!!
People were surprised she made it because it was really a B movie, and so was beneath her. She did the original stage play so wanted to do the movie. Glad she did, she's brilliant (as usual)..
@@63mckenzie Her stage show was called "Burlesque", but was nothing like this story. the play was written by Arthur Hopkins, this was adapted from The G string Murders by Gypsy Rose Lee.

It's said she was a true lady. She was gorgeous elegant & dignified in every way through & through. A versatile actress who was stunning in every role she tackled!!!
This movie entertains me so much because it is sooo realistic in the atmosphere, the shows, the relationships between the different types of employees, the stage productions, even the raid, of which I was only in one. I wish I could go back there again, to the Harbor Burlesque in Ecorse, Michigan, circa 1988 to 1998. What a GRAND Ol TIme!!!
I am sooo Happy to rewatch this movie today, as I am not feeling well n used to be a burlesque dancer in the 1980's. It ALWAYS cheers me up!!! Thanks for posting!!!
An amusing little movie - surprisingly I'd not seen it before. The dance sequences and the costumes were the best parts for me. I also enjoyed reading most of the comments, in particular those made by ex-burlesque performers or their offspring. The explanation for the lack of strong male actors due to WWII was interesting - I had not made the link between the year of production and the unbalanced cast (in terms of quality of actors). Thank you for uploading.
Love this movie! I don't care how many times I've watched it, I still love it. ❤❤ I would love to see the whole movie without all the cuts to get it to fit in the time frame. ❤
Being I am a 66 yr old n retired Burlesque dancer from the 1980's, having worked several years at the Harbor Burlesque Theatre in Ecorse, Michigan, I must say I didnt think I would enjoy the colorized version, as most black n whites are at their VERY best in their original format. I do, however, love seeing the costumes n clothes in color!!! Surprise!!! Lol!!! The raid scene was captured TOTALLY truthfully, down to the house lights being rudely brought up as they filed in surrounding the stage n dressing rooms!!! I was actually in only one raid in over 15 yrs of exotic dancing, n I just happened to be the one on stage as the house lights shot up n the music 🎶 abruptly stopped. Our boss took us to jail in taxi cabs instead of limousines, n we got cash bonuses instead of a dinner n a share in the establishment, but it was TOTALLY a scene if deja vu for me, as was this entire movie, putting a smile on my face that did NOT have one previously!!! Wonderfully accurate, diwn to the different personalities of the people I worked with, which made us like a little family!!! It was a beautiful experience!!! Thanks for posting n awakening my treasured memories!!!👍😎✌️🌠🎇🌃🥳🎉🥂
Wow lady, I bet your smile is still as beautiful as in the days of your youth, when you could drive the audience crazy with a smile from the stage ❤ Live long and prosper, Queen!

When I saw the Big Valley, I was so excited! A new Western on TV. Very popular in the 60's. Was I crushed and disappointed to learn it referred to the San Joaquin Valley, in CA. Because, that is exactly where I lived! LOL! Yep, the same lady Barbara. I mean who wants to watch a TV series based where you live?
I do and I did! At that time (the show played in The Middle of the 70's in Brazil) I also lived in a place that reminded the location of the tv séries. Só It resonated to me. Só much só that I named my first puppy (and I was only for years old) after Barbara's caracter daughter, Audrey!
Barbara Stanwyck was a huge movie star prior to starring in The Big Valley. She was also an accomplished star on Broadway. Lots of classic films and TV roles to her credit.
I loved Barbara S. As Mrs. Barkley: In Big Valley... with Linda Evans as Audrey, Napoleon Whiting as Silas Richard Long as Jarod, Lee Major as Heath and Peter Brick as Nick.
Love the way mid century women our mothers and grandmothers dressed....sexy and fun, but never in bad taste...Thanks!! A lot of people nowadays agree...great for TH-cam to archive these films and music stars...The stars and clothes are gorgeous.....
I watched the first solo dance twice because she danced like a brick layer. 😂 What's with the high shoulders? She reminds me of Beverly from Abigail's Party '"shoulders like a lifeguard, and a walk to match." I like how they move and talk in old movies.
39:48 very disturbing sign of the times - how the woman is hit and the abuse is outright ignored followed by others trying to cover her distress noises from the audience.

Not a complaint, just an observation. None of the AI colorized versions are worth watching, not nearly as good as the hand colorized versions of old. If you like this movie I recommend you watch the original black and white, CCC usually uploads both versions.

I have often wondered how different the AI colors are compared to the actual costumes and sets. I know that many Black and White films were actually colorful productions. You'd think they'd be an all black, white or grey color palette but ironically they film odd looking under different lighting conditions. Sky blue looks more like gray than actual gray under some conditions, for example.
I've already watched this lol. It's pretty good but a lot of scenes are drawn out with the usual abrupt and rushed ending that a lot of older movies had...or atleast from what I remember. Also, isn't that the woman from Stella Dallas?
