Well obviously the Bubsy 3d pal cover is inferior to the US one , i mean without Golden x award telling us it's a masterpiece , then what's the point playing it.
Not a PS1 boxart, but the boxart for Donkey Kong 64 has always bothered me. Not only do 2 of the 3 minecart sections not take place in the jungle, but neither Lanky nor Tiny ride a minecart once, nor does K.Rool. In fact, the final boss takes place in some kind of boxing ring.
There is a PAL box art that I really don't like as much as America. Pac-Man 2 The New Adventures. In the PAL version it shows Pac-Man before taking off with the glider. However in the American art, he is losing his mind. When I see the American box, I think of the fact Pac is more expressive than his pizza circle design from the arcades. The PAL box is just...boring.
Personally, I think the PAL box art for Spyro: Year of the Dragon is significantly worse than the NTSC one. Bentley’s derpy eyes ruin the whole composition lol

These are still great, I love them so much and will always return for rewatches. But it does make me eager to see Caddy revisit some of these ideas but in the longer format to really go all the way. Personally I think 'Ripto's Rage!' is a better name than 'Gateway To Glimmer', plus it makes more sense since Ripto is the main villain. Also the NTSC boxart for 'Year Of The Dragon' is better than the PAL Boxart in my opinion. I do agree the Reignited Trilogy version of the Ripto's Rage! boxart looks a lot better compared to the original, there's more detail.
Rypto’s Rage is about his “Anger” showcased in Avalar. Not about Revenge. Did you forget every time he saw Spyro “The Dragon”, he’s enraged and ticked off???
@Lord Baphomet Gateway to Glimmer, hell, even the exaggerated title for Mario 1 that the original comment came up with were not that bad of titles anyway. They are all OK titles, even Ripto's Rage is alright. It's the rest of Ripto's Rage's box art that makes it terrible. The flames in the background are trying way too hard to be edgy and the font used is awful
@@Spacething7474 ok, you can dislike that one, fair enough, but you can't tell me the phoenix games-tier us cover is in any way good. Like, the eu one is ok enough for many people to like it but you gotta have some serious nostalgia goggles on to not see how bad the us art is
@@chukyuniqul I kinda enjoy the US cover in a so-bad-it's-good way, as the type of boxart that makes me chuckle whenever I see it. ESPECIALLY since it barely matches the tone of the game. On the other hand, the minimalist EU cover is just really boring. Also, the oil-painting-esque design they went with really hindered the design of the objects and shapes (which I admit, actually are cool). Plus, it looks like a texture I'd hate to touch.
@Michael Davis But that's wrong, "Ripto's Rage" Implies that someone named Ripto is full of Rage.which Ripto is, very much full of rage that a Dragon has entered Avalar.
Completely disagree with Spyro 2. 1) I've never liked "Gateway to Glimmer" as a title because it DOESN'T tell you what the game is about. Glimmer is only the first level. "Ripto's Rage" on the other hand not only gives you the name of the main villain but it does a far better job at explaining the current situation in Avalar and what you'll be going up against. 2) Spyro's pose on the NTSC cover is just a lot cooler in general, as is the logo. The silver-plated "2" in the back looks nicer than just having it slapped next to the title. Also I like the flame background just for its pure 90s edginess. Oh, and the whole thing was holographic. 3) Yes the Ripto model in the background is shit but so is that Lava Lizard model. Don't make fun of one when the alternative isn't any better.
Miharu The Fox but caddicarus said that the name “ripto’s rage” implies that the game is a revenge story even though it’s not since the game is ripto’s first appearance
In terms of pure pronunciation Ripto's Rage is a bit harder. Yes it's shorter, but the combination of p followed by t in Ripto is quite a tricky oral configuration as it's a plosive followed directly by a fricative. The r sound used to alliterate in it is also a more complex articulation than other sounds, as it requires more precise tongue and teeth positioning than the very open g sound in the PAL title. So altogether there's a lot of complex articulations in Ripto's Rage, whereas while longer Gateway to Glimmer has a lot of more open, more easily flowing sounds.
I actually disagree on Spyro 2, but agree with everything else. I agree that the flame background is a lot more generic, but it doesn't look bad and we have the far superior name and logo. I really don't like the name "Gateway to Glimmer," because that's such a small part of the story, Ripto is the main reason all that stuff was happening, so it makes sense to have him in the title. The European logo is also really lame, it's incredibly generic, but the American logo has this metal disc in the background with a 2 etched on it, with "Ripto's Rage" being in a very nice looking stylized font.
Yeah it makes more sense to name an entire game after the first level that barely has anything to do with the majority of the game rather than the MAIN ANTAGONIST who is the part of the game the story revolves around.
You sound like the world's coolest/strictest art teacher. Like if Gordon Ramsay taught box design. "MINIMALISM, PEOPLE! Less is MORE! If I see ONE cover with a main character looking off to the side, the whole class gets detention! Perkins, that'd better not have been a title I saw you change! PETERSEN! WHAT IS ALL THIS STUFF!?" "I...I thought it would grab more attention?" "IT DOESN'T FIT THE TONE OF THE GAME AT ALL! HAND. IN. YOUR. APRON! YOU'RE EXPELLED!"
QuicklimeTime EX I think that’s just more of a cultural difference as oppose to him being snobby. Maybe Europeans like it, while Americans (I’m assuming you’re American I’m sorry if I’m wrong) we tend to find that approach a bit dull and boring.
@@Linklex7 Wasn't criticising the guy, sorry if that's how it came across. Am British myself, but no offense taken. Yeah think the whole thing may be a cultural barrier.
I'd like to see someone make a reality or internet video game box art reality show where contestants submit box art for games based on actual games or games yet to be made.
I always believe a problem with American covers is at times they try to make games look edgier then they are , i mean have you guys seen the Us covers for Kirby games .
In Japan they all love cute stuff and cute characters like Kirby but here in the west many people think cute stuff is only for very young kids and avoid it so thats why they changed the box art for the Kirby games. Animals and Animal videos on youtube seems to be the only cute stuff you can openly enjoy in the west without being seen as a weirdo,
CyberLance26, as someone who lives in the West (but not the US), I can tell you that that philosophy is just plain stupid! I love my share of cute things, but even if people like "cool things", even they think these "covers" are puke inducing! -_-
@@Paxtin Yeah, totally agree with that one too, just slap a random castle on there and called it a day is terrible compared to the beautiful art of Ayami Kojima for UK and JP.
Paxtin Yeah I kinda got that feeling too more like this is the different between European and North American cultures. Which is fine. None of these looked bad. Every single one, I thought the American looked better
11:08 no. It's not glimmer. glimmer is just the first level, the actual world is Avela (idk if that's how you spell it)! And you say ripto's rage is a mouthful? gateway to glimmer is a mouthful!
Kirby is indeed a badass, but it's not because he/her/it gets pissed, it's because Kirby is the harbinger of the apocalypse with face that melts your heart. And that's something the franchise should be proud of - let the cuteness reign as even death itself get consumes by the pink monstrosity. Love it.
9:30 the most insulting is that Chronicles is the first Tomb Raider game that has a HUGE part where you don't have ANY guns (like the Last Revelation's tutorial/intro), and also, Lara NEVER USES PISTOLS when she wears this suit. She gets an optical assault rifle. With very limited ammo. So, the TR game with LEAST combat gets THAT as a cover.
FF9 is my favorite Final Fantasy game but I have always wondered something about its US box art, which I agree isn't very good. Why the hell is Amarant there, of all characters? He's not very important to the plot and is probably the least memorable party member. He's the last one you get, too. It just seems so random. Eiko or Freya or even Beatrix, Kuja or Brahne would have made more sense...or just have the four characters already on the cover. Amarant just feels shoehorned in.
@@OsumiVF3tb What I like about the NTSC version of MGS is that the red logo is shiny, much like Spyro 2's cover. Yeah, just seeing a red logo on a white background may seem bland, but seeing it in person makes a huge difference. I bought a copy of the game solely for that cover.
hmm, nope completely disagree on spyro 2s cover. it must be nostalgia talking but i loved it. the flames make it cool so does spyro in front of it, and ripto being in the background ready to cause trouble. and the title for spyro 2 makes more sense personally besides gateway to glimmer is just referring only to the first level
I'm still going to call hypocrisy on the Metal Gear Solid one. because of the Resident Evil remake box art in PAL doing literally the same thing with black instead of white.
Remolay it’s more of a dingy brown texture on the pal REmake and the minimalism just shows the mystery of the mansion you explore. I can’t see much reason for the minimalism on ntsc mgs
@@Ender41948 The plot is convoluted but nothing about it is meant to be "mysterious." Except maybe Psycho Mantis. The original Resident Evil however thrives on being mysterious and unknown because...it's horror. What is there to be horrified by if there is no mystery?
Which is exactly why they changed a lot of them, and the same goes for title changes, as arbitrary as many of them are. Sure, one box art is usually better than the other, but sometimes they're equally good or bad. It seems more often that North America gets worse box art, while Europe more often gets worse titles.
@@SophisticatedGoat222 That's completely false; S.C.A.T was the North American name of a game originally called Final Mission in Japan, which was renamed Action in New York when released in Europe for obvious reasons.
There's actually a bit of a story behind the cover change for Symphony of the Night. Previous Castlevania entries always had what could be considered "cool" boxart. Simon Belmont wielding his whip in front of the castle with the image of Dracula in the background, that kind of stuff. For Symphony of the Night, the team wanted to make the game more accesible to a bigger audience, which is where the Metroidvania and level up system has come from that we know and love today, but they also wanted to have more appeal when it came to the boxart, because who can say no to a bishounen Alucard? America can. They thought that the cover would turn previous Castlevania players off with how bishounen it looked, to a point where they thought it might even be overlooked in a store, so they settled for.... yeah, whatever that was. It fits, but we all know what the better cover is.
This is the 6th Gen Mega Man boxarts in a nutshell Japan: Beautiful artwork America: A few things from the Japanese boxart Europe: A character standing in front of a blank background

can not agree on the spyro one, and btw the subtitle for the pal version makes no sense either since glimmer is just the first level and not the whole game world, should have been gateway to avalar
TBH I have no problem with 'gateway to glimmer' being removed from the Spyro 2 title. Glimmer was just the first level, it's like if they called Crash 2 'Warp pad to Turtle Woods' Edit: looking at the comments I'm apparently not alone. XD
The most hated box art I've ever witnessed was for mgs4. In the UK and Japan, they have a beautiful omage to the original style, but in the US we got cgi snake closeup. I didn't even recognize the fact that it was metal gear, I thought it was some other bland action game until far later. It infuriates me that they had a artist make a gorgeous cover, but we got something absilutely disgusting by almost any game's standards
The standards in the US and Canada, for how consumers buy games is different than in PAL regions, and different from Japan, that's why a lot of our boxarts (even though I think it looks dumb) have character models and such on them
For Tombi/Tomba, I assumed it was something to do with like a European language meaning for tomba being not especially good. I totally love this video, Caddy. I've always thought the NTSC boxes were awful.
I never actually saw any game-play of Bust-A-Move and always thought it was some sort of acid trip dancing game involving balls. I was very surprised to see pew pew match 3 bubbles.

I’m guessing the Tomb Raider one was different because Matrix and Mission Impossible were popular around that time
Spyro 2 US boxart > Spyro 2 PAL boxart - also the story has almost nothing to do with glimmer, while it has everything to do with "Ripto's Rage".
@Michael Davis But that's wrong, "Ripto's Rage" Implies that someone named Ripto is full of Rage.which Ripto is, very much full of rage that a Dragon has entered Avalar.
@Frost E Bear Also according to Insomniac, Ripto's Rage and Ripto are named after one of the guys on the team saw the Japanese cover for Spyro (スパイロ)
I don't like either titles tbh
I agree with this
Very good point there.

Ripto’s Rage is a mouthful?
As if Gateway to Glimmer isn’t?
Right? Comparing three syllables to five...how the hell is Ripto's Rage a mouthful?
The british accent problaby
In terms of pure pronunciation Ripto's Rage is a bit harder. Yes it's shorter, but the combination of p followed by t in Ripto is quite a tricky oral configuration as it's a plosive followed directly by a fricative. The r sound used to alliterate in it is also a more complex articulation than other sounds, as it requires more precise tongue and teeth positioning than the very open g sound in the PAL title. So altogether there's a lot of complex articulations in Ripto's Rage, whereas while longer Gateway to Glimmer has a lot of more open, more easily flowing sounds.
WingedAsarath if pronouncing “ripto” is hard, then you probably have a speech impediment.
And the holographic cover made the fire shiny and gold :)
Yeah it makes more sense to name an entire game after the first level that barely has anything to do with the majority of the game rather than the MAIN ANTAGONIST who is the part of the game the story revolves around.

Alright, we gonna have to fight over the Spyro 2 cover.
9:30 the most insulting is that Chronicles is the first Tomb Raider game that has a HUGE part where you don't have ANY guns (like the Last Revelation's tutorial/intro), and also, Lara NEVER USES PISTOLS when she wears this suit.
