Looks spot on! And it's a game changer.
With triples I hardly use the look left/right unless leaving the garage on rFactor2 (since they have collisions active).
Ordered a DD1 wheel, upgrading from CSW 2.5 let's see if that adds even more immersion.

I got the DD a few weeks ago, as upgrade to my good old fanatec gt3rs. It is ridiculously good, the difference is night and day.

Even though I love the immersion, I have not used VR in over a year. The biggest reason is that I do not like being out of my physical environment. Since I added a Fanatec Formula V2.5 and a button box, I cannot see myself going back to VR again soon. I have been using triple monitors since 2014 and they are a necessity, in my opinion.

I made the jump from 2.5 to DD2 and it is a great upgrade. Only run up to the 402 driver cos if you do really love RF2 the newer drivers break the FFB for that sim.

Congrats Mike! I raced exclusively in VR for 4 years, but got triple 32" back in September and haven't felt the desire for VR since. Wasn't even difficult to adjust due to accurate FOV settings, which was easy with the various FOV calculators available. Love the comfort and still plenty of immersion. Have also been able to use an old smartphone and tablet for secondary dash and telemetry data , which has been great. And finally, triples allow me to enjoy titles that aren't VR compatible or don't run well in VR (like ACC).

  • @davids2361

I have both triples and VR but always go to VR when possible. The added perception of depth helps me dramatically, especially in rally. I run so much better in VR on DR 2.0 than I am capable of running in WRC 10 on triples. But I don't have to worry about content creation.

Cool, Mike, but I tried this in a mall some months ago and a have to say the side monitors are basic for mirrors and you almost don't use them to drive, especially in very low FOV like you use. You know, it is nice, especially for watching, but I'll never spend money on this setup. I have a 34 ultrawide and considering changing for a 49 normal wide. VR is something else, I had one 2 years ago but too much sickness for me, sadly.

i've been considering replacing my VR setup with triples, but I feel like the right side monitor which is missing the depth feeling of the right side of a car which is flat away from where the monitor is like angled back wouldn't feel quit right. Comparitively the left side monitor which looks out your window makes sense as the angle of the car comes back at you the way the monitor does. Does that make sense? How do you feel that right side monitor actually represents the width of the car?

I switched from triples to ultra-wide and also VR. Honestly, it was a MISTAKE. It didn't take me too long to regret it. The problem was, my monitors were only 60hz and I wanted to upgrade to something a bit better. For budget reasons, I only went up to 100hz on my ultra-wide. I could not have afforded to upgrade all three monitors (I was also upgrading my PC at around the same time). But, hindsight being what it is, I wish I had stuck with my triples. The sense of immersion is terrific and I actually prefer it even to VR, which has a narrower FOV and requires moving your head right and left often to look for cars that may be along side. IMHO, if you're torn between ultra-wide, VR or triples, go with triples, if you can afford the price, and have the room.

I am in the same boat. I love my 49 inch screen, but I do sometimes miss the sense of speed that tripples would have offered. An advantage of 49 is that the tax on the GPU is somewhat less than tripples. Another important point for discussion is the vertical screen space. That's why wide screen TV's are interesting as well, e.g. a 66 inch tv could be fun as well.

For every simracer out there: Triples are a must because of all the points you mentioned. I also went to triples a while ago and it definitely improved the fun, immersion and everything else. Was on 43” 4K single screen. Went to 3x27” 1080p. I wanted 3x32” 1440p but my GPU can’t run 1440p with good FPS so 1080p for me and it’s a little bit unsharp, I’m used to it but reading the little dashboard info’s of some cars are difficult.
Ideal: 3x32” 1440p but 3x27” 1080p still OK. My budget only allowed just triples 27” 1080p and without GPU upgrade. RTX 2070 Super is my GPU. If I had 3090 then yeah bring it on triples 32” 1440p with everything on Epic. Now I run low/medium and very few high settings. And I can maintain above 60 FPS with 35 Grid. Only difficult when rain and dark like on Nurburgring on ACC. Race Begin it drops to 45-48 FPS, then when field gets sorted it climbs above 60 FPS.

I have a super ultrawide (57", R1000 curve, 4K) but thinking of adding two flat x 27 monitors either side (GPU = RTX4090 so 'should' be able to run all at 2K or maybe even 4k @120Hz) because one thing I find really distracting with triples is the proportion of the side monitors.
In a real car the windscreen would be curved and over twice the size of the side windows but having equally sized monitors doesn't reflect that (although of course it's easier to set up). If I manage to get two 27" x 2/4K x 120Hz monitors at a reasonable price then I'll give it a go, see if it works as hoped.

I have VR as well but it hangs on my wall unused and collecting dust. It is fantastic except if you wear glasses (I do) or don't want to be wiping the sweat off your ears and forehead constantly (especially during summer) or you have kids that need attention sometimes or have dogs that need attention sometimes or don't want more wires attached to your head or just want to be aware of your surroundings to see who just walked into your house or the many games that don't support VR or the eye fatigue I suffer from using VR for more than an hour at a time....
I thought VR would replace my monitor (a 55 inch Samsung curved 4K TV at the time) but in all honesty I regret buying it. I paid $600 for three LG IPS 75 Hz 1440p led monitors and have them mounted on a Trak Racer triple monitor stand. Being free to get up or look around the room or pause the game and just talk to my girlfriend when she walks up to me is far, far superior to VR hassles.
Triples has it's issues. Some games don't play nice with Eyefinity running. Usually simply changing the resolution to 2560x1440 and going windowed mode will fix it. Simple Runtime Window Editor program can fix some of the games that refuse to play nice.

Last year I bought the best ultrawide 34GN850 for 1K. Now, when monitor prices stabilized in the EU, I could buy triples for the same price. But it is what it is.

I just can't get over the buzz I being "in" the cockpit in VR but for some reason I don't find the sense of speed that great. Don't you find 27" so close at only 1080P a bit blurry? I thought that monitor size is 1440P territory (or sit futher back :P)

Continuing a point you brought up, upgrading to triple monitors back around 2010 was the greatest decision ever!If you are an oval racer or run Sports/Endurance cars on oval road courses like Daytona or Charlotte, triples make it SO EASY to go two,or even three wide on the oval! Before the triples, even going two wide in the long banked turns of Daytona or Talladega made me anxious, lol.

I got rid of triples and went for a 34" ultra wide plus VR to conserve space. Maybe go back someday for better screens but who knows. Oculus 2 is absolutely amazing kit for the $, I have to imagine psvr2 will be pretty awesome, but at some point they'll hit that sandy bridge/ryzen style power spike and a headset will definitively obliterate screens.

Moved from a VRG2 to 3 x 4K 50 inch screens for the FOV, edge to edge clarity and most importantly comfort. Also no eye strain over long sessions, which may be a personal thing.

I have a 49" super-ultrawide (32:9) all the advantages of a single screen together with 80% of the fov of triples with none of the drawbacks. Main "issue" is 60Hz but that is perfectly playable in ACC and my pc also handles 55-60fps on ultra and there is no way I will be upgrading that over the next year or two 😂

I have a triple screen as well but it doesn't work right. With NVidia control I was able to get the game to play on 3 screens but the 4th screen on top went black after merging the 3 Samsung G7 screens. The game looks great, just like in your video, but I don't yet know how to fix the problem with the 4th screen. I am VERY new to sim racing and multiple monitors. I would be thrilled if someone knows how to get the 4th screen to work again.

I'm a VR sim racer and cant go back to the flat monitor image. I try it but it doesnt work. Even tripples are a flat image...vr is a real 3d image that helps to calculate distances (to cars, corners, curbs ) and gives you the feeling to sit in a racecar... no megainch sourround monitorsetup can give you that.

Any reason you didnt go truple 34? Cost? Im building a rig as we speak and i want to get a single screen for now( i currently only use VR). I want something that i can triple later own the line. 34 or even 32 seems like the obvious choice if i have to run it single for a while

I really wish the side mirrors wouldn't show you so much of what's behind you. That's what the rear view mirror is for.
A number of times you just lose sight of the car alongside and have to wait to see if they come back alongside or appear in the side mirror.

  • @toohard2beat
    @toohard2beat ปีที่แล้ว

I had dismissed a triple monitor setup because I use VR but there are numerous times where I just don't feel like going through the setup it takes to start a game in VR. Also, there are times where I would rather not be in the headset simply because I like being able to see my hands on the wheel. Maybe a triple monitor setup is the better option for me even though VR is king of immersion.

Good video. I am currently using a HP Reverb G2 for my racing. Prior to that, I was using a single screen but with head tracking. I bought one of those playstation 3 modded camera's and a 3d printed ir headset. That setup worked great for being able to see the apex's. But VR is definitely the way to go for me. I use a Next Level Racing GT Lite fold up cockpit and don't have the room for triples. Using a vr headset with my setup is perfect and takes up very little space. When I am done, I get my office back. Since I run a business out of this spare bed room / office, I can't have a cockpit sitting in the middle of it (as much as I would really like that).

    Awesome video!
I just discovered that I can use just the bottom half of my 4k TV to acheive a 32:9 windowed resolution, essentially an ultra wide aspect. I just set a window to 3840x1080 and leave my FOV alone but because it's half the size image but at 32:9 aspect I effectively get an ultra wide aspect and nothing stretches at all (like it would if you used full screen and cranked up the FOV.
It's essentially like zooming out / putting the seat/eyes farther back but leaves FOV alone, so... It's awesome. I tested this on assetto Corsa and it works great.

That's pretty much my setup with bezel deletes including a VR headset option, two transducers one mounted to below my seat and one mounted to my pedals. A side note with the Mclaren GT3 rim, I came across an issue with the shifter magnet breaking through the hole it sits in and had to rebuild the side wall of the hole it sits in so be aware that will happen at some point and no more shifty shifty. I advice getting an after market paddle module.

@SimRacing604 It gets stretched, the view gets stretched from the 3 monitors, you shouldve actually disabled ur monitor instead of just putting a black box over them, so then the view would be back to normal
