The weakest part of this hack by far is the creepypasta shit, I wish they'd drop it and focus on making a weird nightmare castle that leads to infinite other castles. The spookiness is inherent in that concept. You don't need "YOUR DEEPEST FEARS" and "DARK FACELESS MARIO WITH BLOOOOOOD".

I feel like someone played SM64 for the first time and was like, "This is great and all, but it would be way better if it was like my favorite video game of all time: Yumi Nikki."

it cannot be overstated how WILD this hack is: You run for through like 5 different hubs in a row without finding any level only to randomly enter a warp into a huge level with 1 star in it (this is a 140 star hack) only to die and get sent to a completely different hub you have never seen before.
Oh and some hubs have multiple almost identical versions but with diffrent levels in them.
I have no idea how anyone is supposed to 100% this hack by themselves; there are what feels like more hubs than levels
EDIT: Oh and you can miss out on stars depending on your Mips order

Everyone’s here debating the star count. IIRC, it’s 149, with two of them only obtainable before hitting the yellow switch (it deletes both the 15- and 50-star versions of MIPS) and one of them only obtainable after dying in the credits cutscene (TTM behind the waterfall). I played this ROM hack for 20 hours or some shit and researched a ton into it, and I’m still not even completely sure about all the other ways the game lies to you about how many _stars_ exist.
Also, the map of the game that that one guy made is terrifying.
Fun fact: If you get to the credits in B3313, after the cutscene ends and you die, your game state stays in Act 1 (the cutscene state). If you go to TTM, the star that’s normally behind the waterfall appears and you can collect it.
you can actually switch to act 1 when you wait around 35 seconds or when mario says "n-n-n-no!" twice on the title screen

I really appreciate how restrained this hack is with its horror aspects. Instead of being obviously fake "HYPER REALISTIC BLOODEYE SONIC ZOMG", most of the hack is just bizarre broken English, early beta elements, and sprawling levels with no rhyme or purpose. Makes the actual scary parts that much more memorable, like you made the wrong decision in a dream and wound up somewhere you REALLY weren't meant to be.
My fucking heart stopped when I was DEEEP inside the plexus in a seemingly normal but slightly under saturated entrance room and talked to the toad

Some of my favorite types of horror are just the subtle "This doesn't feel right" type of stuff like this. Nothing to extreme, and it doesn't even need a huge backstory or jumpscares. Just the feeling that something doesn't belong is quite ominous.

the oversaturation of "sm64 beta but haunted" content is a testament to just how surreal 90's childhoods were. Everyone wants to capture that "am I being MK ultra'd?" feeling.
It's not a 90s thing, it happens any time you play a game so much as a kid. I grew up with 64 DS and I STILL constantly had freaky, surreal dreams about it that I can still vividly remember to this day.

@Orion Audios Yeah, I ended up looking into the ending after watching and felt it was a bit lackluster for what the hack is in it's entirety. I guess it's fine cause it still makes up for it with the general vibe of the whole piece but the weird stuff that happens does have you wishing for something more, I suppose.
@@four_am I think the point of the hack is that there is no real 'purpose' to anything. The huge levels with only 2 or 3 stars in them, the faceless Marios, the werid dialogue frome the NPCs, etc. It seems to me the point of it all is to confuse the player as much as possible without giving an actual explanation as to whats going on.
That 'you FOCKER' at 1:04:58 is beautiful genuine reaction to being tricked, I love it.
This hack feels like the result of someone observing Simple's tendencies to fabricate dumb jokes and lies during his races with his friends, and applying those habits to Mario 64 but in the most extreme way possible; at this point, the developers might as well add a baseball minigame to the hack
Absolutely love how surreal this game feels, the devs did a great job with making this hack feel like a chaotic mess in the best way possible

This is an entirely true title. This game is exactly like a dream you have whilst under a fever. It’s uncomfortable, exhausting, you constantly feel stuck despite being in constant motion, seeking something to no end.

I have had sm64 dreams where there were more areas to the castle than existed and those places being somewhat spooky.
I dreamed once of a ridiculous snow level. It was a giant snowy plain with a huge lake.
God, I’ll always remember the dream I had where the game had a day and night cycle I think? And depending on some levels the time can completely change its layout.
One instance of it was some metal slide level, but half way down was a lava pit that you have to turn away from, but at night the lava is drained and you could slide all the way to the bottom.
… it had quite the eerie feeling to be honest.

I think it's because of the overly mysterious elements to it. Just like you were a child, you don't understand what is and isn't a part of the game. The world feels massive and alive. That is peak game design. The nostalgic esque feelings the game elicits also help with that.

I don't know who made this, but as an artist and a painter, I feel like whoever made this would be extremely good at art. The level of creativity that went into this is off the charts.

I can attest to the whole "What is random" during development thing.
We had a course in app development and were making a game. We hade no graphics besides placeholder shit (squares of different colors) and so we panicked, the due date was creeping up after all. We put the first sprite we could rip from the internet which was santa and some elves. During the presentation we framed it as something like "Santa and his elves have been chased out of their factory in their snowy lands by the ice witch, help them reclaim their lost land" or some bullshit like that. It is all justification for absolute BS random decisions
