East Lomond Hillfort Tour | Fife | Hillwalking in Scotland

  • Due to strong winds, headphones are recommended for a better audio quality. This week we went to Fife for a hillfort tour of East Lomond, one of the 'Paps of Fife'. Initially, there was a low cloud and it was windy throughout, so I added subtitles to make up for all the wind noise. It was an interesting walk, perhaps half as long as West Lomond, which we had to leave for another day. We went up to the top the steep way and then made our way round past the old lime kiln on the way back. We parked in the Craigmead Car Park, which offers access to both East and West Lomond. This Iron Age-style hillfort likely belonged to the Venicones tribe. There is no obvious wall like in some of the other hillforts we have visited. There are only vague outlines suggesting walls, bumps and lines suggesting former buildings. However, excavations uncovered plenty of things, for example prehistoric and Roman pottery, a Bronze ring-headed pin, an iron horse-bit, shale and glass armlets, an ingot mould, a crucible and a rotary quern. The abundance of everyday items suggests a site which was occupied permanently. Even a Bronze Age tomb was found. The very first thing they found was a Pictish stone depicting a 'steer', a castrated bullock, which may point to the use of agriculture in the surrounding area.

Thanks for the lovely film, and for showing the layout and descriptions of the area… things that can’t be seen on Google Earth, along with birds and wind

    Wow! Imagine living up there!
I wonder if the hillforts were built so prominently so that they could signal each other, as well as the obvious defensive advantages?

It really is, especially when you get a full view around the whole area. It's so out in the open though, it's hard to escape any weather conditions. :D
